Castle Rock Scotch Whisky 500ml $20 @ Liquorland

570

Found this deal. 500ml of blended whisky for $20 at LiquorLand. Not the best quality but at $40 for %40 ABV a Litre it's definitely a bargain.

Enjoy.

Wow that's cheap. I've never drunk it but I just don't see how they can do it. By my calculations there is about 93 cents per bottle not going to the ato!
Someone smarter/more knowledgeable than me please tell me I'm wrong.

    • +6

I think its only 85.36 dollars per litre (* .500 mls * 40%), so $17.07 in tax per bottle, leaving $2.93 per bottle not going to the ATO. So take away $1 for the bottle, and it's only $1.93. say that the store gets 50% of that, that leaves 96.5 cents to actually make the stuff, including barrel, power, etc…..crazy!

GST applies on top of the liquor tax, AFAIK.

Barely aged whiskey is incredibly easy to make. Most likely they make it barrel strength, ship it to Australia, water it down and stick it in a bottle. $1 for a glass bottle is way over the top, glass isn't anywhere near that expensive to make.

At this price it's probably break even to get people into the store tied up with a contract to carry other lines of booze (they own Spey River, Highland Reserse, Hogs 3 and a pile of other brands).

        • +1

It's not bottled in Australia. They bottle it at the factory.

      • Does that include GST?

      • Is there anywhere in the world you could buy this stuff for $3 - literally tax free?

      • Geez mate I thought I was buggerd but you're legit crazy!

Espresso is about 30ml. 30ml of this stuff is $1.20.

Hawthorn Gin is the same price (less ABV though)

    • Correct. Not through Coles online though.

Since when do they sell this in 500ml bottles? I usually get this in 700ml bottles.

  • Cheap! But is it cheap and nasty?

    • It's not bad as a mixer.

        It's better as a suppository

  • How is over 90% of the price of something going to the government as tax not show we are living in a communist empire?

    • +2

Because a %100 of the profit doesn't go to that same government.

      • Lol what a time to be alive.

    • -1

You don’t even know what communism is.

Learn to drink cask wine. Buy 4L Red from Aldi's only about $9 and has over 40 standard drinks in it twice as much as a full bottle of Whisky. Wine has the lowest tax. Use some soda water to dilute it and drink it like beer.

  • Promoting cheap whiskey… Skinnerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

  • I mixed it with ice and soda water, coke just completely drowned the taste. Its quite strong in alcoholic flavour, Liquorland's 'High Commissioner' is way worse, you are better off going off with Bells for $33

  • If your only looking at abv aldi has 750ml tawny 16.5% for $4.99. Its not too bad either.

  • +1

If you're looking for something with a bit more depth, I've tried most blended and single malts options available in Australia and as an "everyday" Whisky the Highland Black 8YO from Aldi is well regarded, award winning and would work out to be only 0.006c/ml more.

For the price its awesome value, can be had on the rocks or neat and is a great mixer, it is amazing value for money for what it is.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/felipeschrieberg/2018/06/15/che… "The Highland Black is an unremarkable whisky but enjoyable. Though fruity and full-bodied, there’s not much more than that. Is it worth it’s cheap price? Absolutely. You definitely get your money’s worth and I would say it is a perfect whisky to mix into a highball or a cocktail of your choice."

Yes, of course there are much better, more expensive options, but if you're looking for value for money I couldn't recommend it more.

  • $20 is an appropriate price point for a vaguely whisky flavoured beverage.
It’s like the difference between a good quality barista-made coffee, and Nescafé blend 43. Both are technically coffee, but worlds apart.

  • I like to skull it from the bottle. Gives me a good enough buzz.

At this price you can't afford not to be drunk all the time.

  • Just bought this with Coles flybuys offer for $14.xx. Anyone bought and tried it yet? Just a bit worried how it's gonna taste like as I plan to have it with a mate of mine.
