Breville the Smart Grinder Pro BCG820BSS

DESCRIPTION
More information The very best taste always comes from using quality, freshly roasted coffee thats ground right before you brew. Coffee is at its peak flavour potential between 5-20 days after roasting, so always buy beans with a Roasted On date printed on the bag. Buying beans with a Use By or Best Before date makes it impossible to know when these were roasted. Always use a quality burr grinder, and grind right before you brew, just like the very best cafes.

Breville's conical burr Smart Grinder Pro uses Dosing IQ technology to automatically adjust the dose whenever you change the grind. Choose from 60 different grind settings to achieve maximum flavour potential to suit your favourite brew. Choose between 'cups' for French press or Filter, and 'shots' for Espresso to get the right dose for your coffee's needs. You can even tweak for taste. Comes with two grinding cradles for dosing directly into espresso porta filters, plus an air-tight storage container.

If Shopback is still 8% on home appliancess then I think he grinder might be cheaper on Amazon after Cashback.

    • so pay $171 now instead of $161.50 now, to get back $13.68 = saving of $4.18, but have to wait few months to get it back, ebay myer + qantas points seems easier

  • What is usually the cheapest price for the grinder?

  • -1

This is not a bad grinder for the price but a Baratza settle 270 is a much better grinder in the long run

    • +1

Can you elaborate? Your option is showing at around $450.

      • Great minds! LOL

    • How much better? 2.7 times better? That's the price difference…. Can you please elaborate on the differences? I could buy another one in 2 years and still be ahead of the cost…

      • Do a quick Google search, baratza setter 270 vs [any other grinder].

Lots of coffee nuts out there have compared and discussed pretty much every combination of grinders, it's kinda ridiculous really.

I don't have either so it's hard to say, but from reading some people's smart grinder pro died after a couple of years, others are still going strong 6-7 years later.

When you pay around the $500 mark you should be hopefully getting something that lasts 10+ years.

    • Baratza virtuoso or encore seem closer to the price range of the smart grinder pro.

Encore is not suitable for espresso. "We at Alternative Brewing recognize the power of the Baratza Encore for manual brewing, but we do not recommend it for espresso brewing because of its lack of espresso-fine grinding capability."

    • What does it do over this one? Price?

  • Warning - not suitable for cold brew.

With that said, it was a great grinder provided you want to make just espresso-based coffees. I made the mistake of not checking how suitable it would be for coarser applications (aero/delter press, cold drip, cold brew, french press).

The coarsest digital setting after manually adjusting the burrs physically would maybe just cut it for the delter press (not sure, as I didn't own my delter press till much later), but it absolutely was way too fine for cold brew, let alone french press.

If you're mainly after espresso, it's a great unit (quite large). If you're making more manual coffees ranging from aeropress/similar to French press, I couldn't be happier with the Barazta Encore I recently got (it's ~$210 including delivery when not on sale).

    • Thanks! Wow it looks like you will need two grinders if you like both cold brew and Espresso! Krazy.

      • Yep, that's the impression I got too based on poring over others' experiences who've spent much more than I have!
