Are seconds from Sony typically used, or just box-damaged?
My seconds XM4s just had a slightly damaged box, couldn’t see any sign of the headphones themselves being worn or damaged, and they sound fine.
Mixed bag. My "seconds" WH-1000XM4 looked brand new in box. There's a theory that Sony will sometimes use their Seconds listings to move clearance items to avoid any undercutting clauses they have with their retailers.
My XM3s were refurbs and I couldn't tell that anyone had ever used or even touched them before they got to me. Seven years later they're still going great aside from being a bit grubby. Paid $320 down from $400 at the time.
My refurb WH-XM5's had numerous intermittent issues that Sony couldn't replicate / confirm when I sent them in under a warranty claim. I've had much better luck in the past with many other different headphones and earbuds though.
My wife had the same issue with her WH-1000XM4.
Looked like new but very shortly developed charging issues to the point where they would not hold any charge at all.
Tried numerous cable/charger combos but did not fix it. Sony disagreed….
PS: we both had the XM3 in the past- never had any issues. But both were bought brand new.
PPS: Once bought a Large "seconds" speaker from Sony which came with a cut in the Power cord that probably could have killed someone (and probably were the reason why they were returned/seconds - but proofed to me that these items to not (always) get properly inspected).
Once the cord was replaced they were as good as new.
Yep, years ago I bought a refurb Sony TV that not only wasn't working properly, it still has someone's Netflix logged in!
I got a refurb WH-1000XM4 a year or two back and recently started having charging issues. Replaced the battery and is good as new. Just followed the instructions from ifixit and reused the double sided tape.
Mine were just box damaged or opened but no signs of use. That said, they died after about 2 years and while Sony does have a repair centre, the cost is more than just buying a new pair - and there's no aftermarket parts for repair.

XM6 aren't really much better than their predecessors.
According to Rtings scientific measurements they have slightly worse noise reduction than the XM3's!

Wow, I recently got the XM4s cause of the better ANC than the xm5s. So much for improvements in previous generations
Yeah, Sony are spending more money on marketing than on product design.
However, 30dB of ANC is probably close to the theoretical maximum on ear headphones can achieve.
I have the XM4s and bought XM6 because my wife and I now both want a pair.
The XM6 do sound a bit better, and the Cinema audio mode is great for watching TV.
The also fit tighter, which is good for me. It stays put even when I bend over and stand up quickly. They do have better noise cancellation, and MUCH MUCH better transparent mode.
However, they are less comfortable on the ears and around the neck. They also don't fit in my backpack with my Steam Deck as well as the XM4s.
Since they aren't better in all scenarios for me, I would have been unhappy if I wanted to replace my XM4s with these.
Paid $350 for New Sony WH-1000XM5 from JB in Dec 2022, would have thought they be cheaper now that XM6 is out..

They were new and it was my first time buying headphones for myself, I had also gone years in a hideously noisy household where I was denied sleep and privacy for 10+ years, so the headphones were a desperation purchase more than anything lol

And if used, Sony replace earpads with a new set as part of refurbishment. My refurbished XM5s looked and smelled brand new, just in a box without a paper sleeve with product info. Can't complain for under $300 - full amount can go into the next tax return too.
I guess I wouldn't be buying refurbished earplugs though :-)

Purchased the XM5's as my 4's were having some issues with retaining battery life. I used the PLUSS $30 voucher and SONYEOFY, which brought them down to $300 - RETECH and TECHY didn't work for me (I have eBay plus). Try different combinations. I am an eBay plus user but the codes did not work in random order. One of the combinations worked, couldn’t remember it, as the deal was marked expired and I acted quick.
The Sony code is automatically applied at checkout, and I just have to enter the RETECH code ontop

Just a heads up the XM5's has an auto ANC which adjusts the strength of the noise canceling and you cannot set it manually or dis able it. It means my room is no longer silent as it's not "loud enough" for their stupid auto ANC to turn the strength up.
I have a set of XM4's and XM5's and i loved my XM4's (they still work but one of the mics is gone and it makes them squeal if anc is turned on). I absolutely hate my XM5's and wish I'd bought another set of XM4's instead.
I thought the app pairing it could adjust/disable ANC?
The silver version of the XM5s is a chunk cheaper than the black version

Exactly the same here. Ordered Monday and received in Melbourne today. The XM4's that I purchased are either brand new or some one at Sony Australia has spent a lot of time making everything about the packaging and the headphones look brand new. A great buy for $200.

Does anyone feel the sound quality of the mx4 is very disappointing? Mine fell very flat and lack of any clarity of the sound.
I mean my phone speaker sounds better than this mx4 I received. The NC FEATURE worked brilliantly, bit sound quality is terrible. And I don't even own any high-end earphones.
Have you tried the different equaliser settings?
I am listening FLAC without any equaliser setting, may play around a bit and see how it goes.
