People that like to have navigation help while texting and watching Netflix.

yes, would be a pain to cradle my phone and stick it on the passenger windscreen and hook up the charge cable when i go for a drive …

    • hell yes its easier too as you dont need to have a data connection

Google maps has the option to download maps so you don't require an internet connection.

Not to mention if your in a rural area where mobile reception isn't the best.

I just got my P plates and is looking for a car GPS. I'm looking for something under $200 but don't really know the difference between the ones in this price range. Anyone have any suggestions?

You're far better off using Google maps in navigate mode. They now include portable speed camera and radar locations. Invaluable for a p plater.

Yeah but the problem is in QLD P1 drivers aren't allowed to use GPS on mobile, even when the phone is secured in a cradle. I've called department of transport and they confirmed on this rule, which sucks.

Wtf! Learn something new every day.

At least you get to ride electric scooters in QLD.

        only for P ?

my garmin has lifetime maps, over 7 years old and still gets updates …

      • Yeah, I got a Garmin too from a deal here around then with lifetime map updates. Trouble is I took it out of car and got stored somewhere I can't find it, so even if I find it, from memory it had a 2yr lapse non update period and now 5 years over lol. Most likely the battery gone anyway

At this price range they’re all the same. And a bit hit and miss.

What’s good about this unit is the big screen. It’ll look nice and clear but have poor battery life.

I know people who have bought Aldi branded GPS and worked fine. Others haven’t had such luck.
I know people who swear by Navman. But i know others who swear never to get one.
I had a Garmin for about 10 years ago and it was fantastic before it died. Bought a 5” Garmin a few years ago and it’s garbage.

So, as I said, they’re all a bit hit and miss.

Buy something that’ll do the job for the next few years. Don’t spend too much. Then when you get your full licence you can graduate to Google Maps.

      Hope this helps.

      • Buy something that’ll do the job for the next few years. Don’t spend too much. Then when you get your full licence you can graduate to Google Maps.

shouldn't it be the other way around? when you're not in full license, don't bother forking out money and when you get your full licence then you can graduate to Google Maps.

  • get one second hand for $20-35 on gumtree
