Helmet for My Pillow: From Parris Island to the Pacific - Amazon US - was US$5.99. Not in AU store.

Here is one of the most riveting first-person accounts to ever come out of the Second World War.
Robert Leckie was 21 when he enlisted in the US Marine Corps in January 1942.

In Helmet for My Pillow we follow his journey, from boot camp on Parris Island, South Carolina, all the way to the raging battles in the Pacific, where some of the war's fiercest fighting took place. Recounting his service with the 1st Marine Division and the brutal action on Guadalcanal, New Britain and Peleliu, Leckie spares no detail of the horrors and sacrifice of war, painting an unsentimental portrait of how real warriors are made, fight, and all too often die in the defence of their country.
Unparalleled in its immediacy and accuracy, Helmet for My Pillow is a gripping account from an ordinary soldier fighting in extraordinary conditions.

John Wayne graced the screen as a cowboy, an all-around rugged hero of the plains. With his “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” determination and raw sense of individualism, in many ways he came to symbolize everything that Americans held dear. His characters, tough as nails, were always idealistic adventurers seeking to right the wrongs of the world. But who was John Wayne? Born Marion Morrison, most don’t even know his real name. In this book, we will cut through all the hype and get to the real man behind the legend of John Wayne.

John Wayne was a douche. Anti-women rights, and didn't respect non-whites

The Duke was a product of his time just like you are now. Which time period was good or bad? Mmmm.

Moral relativism is a product of bankrupt morality. There were lots of non racist non sexist people about in his day, which explains why he was such a notorious douche.

  • Him playing Genghis Khan is the funniest thing you will watch in awhile.
