Hi, I was wondering if there is a way to save videos off YouTube to your hard drive? I have seen some programs online for ripping videos off YouTube, anyone know of some trustworthy applications & had experience using them? Thank you

    Jdownloader 2 copy links to clipboard

    • Yeah this.

    • Jdownloader 2 works great to automate the ripping of the entire youtube channel.

      Just copy and paste the URL videos tab

    youtube-dl

    It works perfectly and with other sites too.

    Instructions: $ youtube-dl [video link]

      Don't try anything else unless you like non working programs and spyware with the exception of Jdownloader.

      There is a GUI maintained by another dev and you can do queue downloads using a third dev's application.

        I like Youtube-DLG as a GUI for youtube-dl.

        • I've never tried the GUI, maybe I'll give it a go…

    https://www.4kdownload.com/

    This program seems to get a few of the higher res options that the websites fail to.

      Yes this, get ‘4K video downloader’ on the website. This is the fastest and the software gets updated to prevent blocks etc.
      After trying a few others this one is the best. Free, simple and without issues, well made software.

      Note: some of the website converter options direct you through malicious and dodgy sites to download the video. I would recommend using the software.

        Worth adding that you can choose the video quality (480p / 720p HD / 1080p HD etc) to control file sizes, and another option is to only extract the audio to MP3 etc.

      I've been using this software for years, can definitely recommend it.

    The best one yet. No bullshit, no ads and no re encoding. Gives a direct link from Google servers that you just have to right-click and "Save As".

  • IDM

    Not just limited to youtube. 1 click is all you need to do download anything.

    Just to elaborate on JDownloader 2 (also a full fledged download manager / plugins to parse pretty much everything/websites):

    Here's plenty of screenshots

    variants you can pick from the dropdown for different quality youtube vids or audio only if you choose to do so;

    SRT subtitles;

    Internet downloads manager(IDM)

  • Just add two letters 'pp' after youtube and just before .com in the original URL and you'll get all sort of download options.
    Example: original YouTube URL https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ucQe-3XLEDE and modified URL with download optionsh ttps://m.youtubepp.com/watch?v=ucQe-3XLEDE&t=15s

  • There is some criticism of JDownloader regarding unwanted adware and some code not being open sourced after all.

    Can anyone comment further on this?

      As described in my comment, I have come to conclude ‘4K Video downloader’ is the best of the bunch.
      But with any ‘free’ software, I would advise reading / taking the setup process carefully (and opting out of any packaged ‘bloat / adaware’ during the setup) as they can add ‘bloatware’ into the setup at any time.

      Often this can even happen with even ‘good’ free software, so you have to keep your eyes open.
      Usually by the time a ‘good’ free software is ruined, a different new one is there to take its place.

    • Only ad I've noticed is the small banner ad now in the top right of my jdownloader 2 now;

      Googled on reading your comment and disabled the banner ad through advanced settings.

      Perhaps also some buttons which are links to buying premium (referral links, I'm assuming) if you do not have premium accounts for particular download sites (but these were never intrusive).

    If you have one or two videos to download use VLC VideoLAN.

    Cut and paste the youtube link into VLC, it will start playing. Hit Ctrl+J or Click on Tools, Codec info. The direct URL location is at the bottom.
    Copy the link and paste it back in Chrome, right click, save as.

    VLC is open source no virus no harmfulware. You are welcome.
