How to Get around of Newspaper Subscription Fee?

Hi more and more newspaper charger online subscription fee, I like to read The Age but I think its only give 10 free article a month now, which I finish in one day and its troublesome to delete cache every one or two days. I am thinking if I should just pay for the subscription and be done with it. Another reason I am thinking of paying the subscription fee is because I am worried the quality of the news.

I wonder how many OZBargainers pay for the subscription and how many news outlet you pay?

I mainly read The Age, and Financial Times, Australian Financial Review and WSJ only occasionally .

    Incognito

    • Not sure how to do that, will google it. Thanks

    • Epic Private Browser :)

    • I don't know about others but Chrome incognito doesn't work on Couriermail.
      It still asks for subscription.
Or is there a trick to it?

    Outline.com

    • Ok I’ll try it n see if I can work it out

    • Yep this one. Incognito only works a few sites.

Bypass Paywalls and/or Anti Paywall Master.

    • How to do that? Can you please give a more detailed steps. Thanks

I just have ccleaner set to clear that particular browser's cache and cookies whenever I close it. Still doesn't help when the most interesting articles are behind a paywall however. :(

    • Yes I agree the most interesting articles are behind paywall. Still how do you just clean one particularly browser’s cache and cookies? I only know how to clean all the cache n cookies

      • Go to 'custom clean' in ccleaner then right-click on the browser to clean. Although after I close a browser I used to get a popup asking me if I wanted ccleaner to clean it automatically. You might have to play with the settings to find that option in ccleaner.

        • Thanks I’ll try your suggestion

  • ABC and Guardian are free. What news are you looking for?

    • +2

I tried Abc n Guardian but I still like The Age better, not only The Age has more detailed current affairs and news and analysis but also more localised.

I am interested in general news, current affairs but particularly business news.

If you're using Chrome to view the age,

    1. Click on the padlock (next to https://www.theage.com.au)
    2. Click on Cookies
    3. remove all the cookies
    4. Click Done
    5. Refresh the website and you're good to go. Repeat the process.

Or you can use incognito mode to view it. The choice is yours.

    Duck Duck Go browser.

  • Probably the only Ozbargainer who pays for a subscription but I only subscribe when it's 50% off and threaten to cancel when it's almost full price in the hopes they'll offer more months at 50% off.

Tip: If you subscribe to the Sydney Morning Herald, it'll give you access to The Age as well and vice versa

    • Thanks for the tip. I subscribed to The Australian for a number of years, but I do not really use it much

For many sites, add the article to Pocket and read from there.

With The Economist, set your browser to block cookies.

For (formerly known as) Fairfax, change the domain in the URL to smh, theage, watoday, brisbanetimes, canberratimes, etc.

library often has access through their online portals (SA libraries can access News papers)

    • Yes I have tried The Age on library access but its a bit hard to navigate it, hard to adjust size of etc

  • I mostly read all the news on my phone. Easy way to get around for me is Google News and Apple News, brings paid articles for free :D hope this helps.

    • In fact the trigger of my post was I was reading Google News and then clicked a link but I could not open the link because the article is from Financial Times. How do you handle the instance of click on an article but been blocked?

      • @jowu15 hmm interesting. For some reason, I haven't faced this issue, yet. May be try Apple News if you use iPhone, this works for me and buy passes everything automatically. I have tested this by sharing a link with someone and they required the payment to read the news. Hope this helps.

        • Thats very interesting. I have encountered articles been blocked a number of times so I do not use Google News much, but I will take your advice and try Apple News. Thanks for sharing.

    • Thanks and will do

Getting real sick of news.com.au with all the huge ads and forced auto-playing videos. It causes jerkiness on my phone all the time and even crashes my friend's phone browser (the only website which does it!).

I just use it to quickly scan headlines, and head over to ABC (which we all pay for already!) for more in-depth reading.

  • Yes, I think the future will be in micro payments where you can pay per article, hopefully after reading it if you find it worthwhile.

  • I pay for one with The Age, but it's a rip-off. I have a student subscription that is much cheaper. When that runs out, I will probably cancel.

    • I think quality of articles in The Age, any newspaper in general, are not what they were, but we can not blame on others when most of us do not want to pay for it. I wonder what is the percentage of people in general public is paying for subscription.

  • FYI: Join the State Library in your own state (e.g. State Library of Victoria), and they will not only provide The Age every day but have a back catalogue going back years. Joining is free…

    • Ok thats easy I live 7 mins walk to State Library of Victoria, will try it out, thanks
