Rats head found in ALDI spinach

Its alleged by a customer that a rats head was found in a bag of fresh spinach and he took his claim to NCAT.

I find this absolutely comical given the recent advertisements Aldi are doing to give them another go for their fresh produce.
As usual their response is of no Fs given. Typical ALDI corporate behaviour.

It appears like the rear end, not the head.

  • +15

It's an opened bag. Unless they can find the other half in a sealed bag, there's every possibility that this is staged.

    • +2

Yep. Pretty likely. Just like the KFC deep fried "rat" not long ago. Faked.

      • Would anyone notice is the question

        • I beg your pardon, are you insinuating that the Colonel's chickens aren't of distinguished regard?

  • +5

Hilarious, perhaps when things simmer down they can get him to star in their next "another go" commercial.

  • +12

Seems staged and the guy is a amateur boxer, so most likely trying to get exposure out of this. On top of that, what's he complaining about? It's free protein!!!!

  • +2

    happens all the time
wollies had a frog or rat in there bagged stuff
    mould found in meats

what can you do, mass produced fresh goods

  • +10

surprised he didn't ask for $20m, loss of boxing income, he was gonna box floyd mayweather but cant now

      lame.

why do you think its on news.com.au? cheap promotion

    Typical ALDI corporate behaviour.

What are you referring to here? How is their corporate behaviour any different or worse than others?
Or is this just getting mad at the foreign company that's upsetting the local duopoly?

Quick search found the others aren't much better. Coles gave a $50 voucher in a similar incident

That's what I don't get about these companies. There had obviously been an error and/or even if the guy is lying it would be less costly to make him go away quietly than to play hard ball and end up in the news.
$50-$100 offer is an insult. No one would take it as they know the company's reputation will be damaged more than this. I reckon $500 would have been enough not to get national attention. But that's just me

      • +1

I wonder if those vouchers may just be what the actual store can do before kicking it over to corp. In which case you might have a very apologetic store manager wanting to set things right but not being able to do more than some small voucher, which is not enough.

And then corp is more of a legal entity that is concerned about protecting itself from damaging their reputation and/or spurious claims, more than keeping the dude happy. Probably better for them to fight a small number of claims than hand out $10k to every scammer who knows they will quietly sweep things under the rug. Which would also mean that things could snowball if they ever have to explain why they've got hundreds of buried claims.

Which obviously sucks super hard if the guy is honest. The real question is whether they would treat it as an honest claim anyway and investigate their own processes to make sure rats aren't getting in. And then, if they would make amends with the dude. But it seems like one of those things that's impossible to prove or disprove.

"Ben had an absolutely horrific experience"

Just lol. If that's the worst event he ever has to witness then he has an amazing life ahead of him.

    • +2

agree so boxing is wayy easier than seeing rat head….. lol

    • +1

Some people lead extremely sheltered lives. Ben has many shocks in store in the future. Generation cotton wool.

      • Please don't generalise a generation. In any event they are only like the way they are due to the actions/parenting of previous generations. The great proportion of individuals are nothing like this snowflake.

If rat wasn't listed in the ingredients, I would be suing for false advertising

  • So he's hitting up Aldi for money, must be American.

"According to Mr Savva, he was frustrated with the lack of sympathy shown by Aldi and described the offer of a $100 gift card as “highly offensive”."

I think thats a pretty good deal, I'll pick up a rat head salad surprise for that!

    • Yeah, but would you eat some of the salad in the bag?

  • +2

What a loser. I'm calling it now - FALSE.

  • +2

OP, not sure what the point of your post is?

    The "medical certificate" is hilarious.

This is to certify that he attended this clinic on 04/10/18 ,found a rat in his food, and he was ADT vaccination on that day.

How can the doctor certify he found a rat in his food?

    • Stupid doctor that likely doesn't know the difference between sign/symptom and observation/diagnosis.

Edit - Just in case someone says, "how would I have written it". I wouldn't have. If the patient says he needs something written to relate his visit to the rat, I would have told him to go elsewhere to make a stat dec.

    • he was ADT vaccination

      😕

They should do the right thing and give him the other half.

  • Since when do Pomms eat salad ?

Whats the point of this post? Pretty sure other stores have issues too…cleaning fluids in milk for example. Nothing wrong with the milk from Aldi though.

    • But then, those guys are doing a recall but these guys arent.

      • Exactly. No company is perfect but it's how they react to the problems that matter. I wonder how much it cost them for lawyers to attend NCAT?
They could have just offered the customer a bit more and be done with it

        • Never give in to blackmail.

  • +1

Well, this is a fairly substantial anomaly for what is very likely a tightly controlled packing, cleaning, and manufacturing process, that is to say, it seems odd that there haven’t been a number of other lesser incidents involving food contamination, only for a whole rats head to pop up.

I’m not saying it’s BS, but one wonders how a rats head flies into a bag of lettuce when presumably no other bags of lettuce have had any contamination, let alone other vermin body parts.

  • Missed opportunity: should have claimed that

I… I'm no longer… wanting to be on the bed… to share bed with my partner. There is no such desire… no desire for anything.

And then sued Aldi for over $3million 🙄

  • +1

    It choked on a needle.

  • He has a boxing match in a months time. Really sounds like he's seeking media attention to me now.

  • The article mentions mouldy strawberries at aldi - which made me think of how Harris Farm have discounted short date fruit… Which is often mouldy. I actually can't believe it. Like a few over ripe strawberries are ok in a discount punnet, maybe they don't know, and there are no health issues that I know of. But fuzzy white mould visible through the packaging? What are they doing? Anyone else noticed this at Harris Farm?

  • he took his claim to NCAT

Good idea, my cat always eats the rat/mouse head and leave the body.

  • It was the back half of a rat, and the guy claims Alfi didn't respond properly.

    So…

    Aldi gave a rat's arse, and didn't give a rat's arse.

I love rats, so poor rat got caught up in machinery. May have died from bait, which is why rat baits are a bad idea. The rat was a Rattus Rattus, or roof rat. They come down for food. It's that time of year they're stashing more food for winter. I feel very sorry for the rat and the man. It would be horrific to know you'd eaten some of it. But I will never understand the fuss of people who buy the same thing - a mammal corpse in plastic. I get it if he doesn't eat meat, though. Aldi needs to not bait rats. Deter them with citronella or peppermint oil. No need to kill them.

  • And then the mouldy strawberries !

  • +5

Holy crap. Just checked my aldi spinach and found an entire mouse in it

    • +1

Eeeew! I would not be eating that spinach, you don't know where that mouse has been.

  • After reading news corporation publications all my life and at age 67 I have come to believe that nothing they print can be trusted to be true. Perhaps it's worth trying to find another source of that information about Aldi. Or as the saying goes never believe everything you read.
