New Gaming PC Time - Thoughts on This Build?

So thinking of getting myself a treat with a new gaming PC. Looking for any thoughts, critiques or judgement on the below build.

I haven't been a massive gamer lately but that's probably more so that my garbage PC cant run anything good.

So on with the build

CPU Intel Core i5 9400F 2.9Ghz $248.00
Motherboard ASUS ROG Strix B360 G Gaming $159.00
Memory G Skill 32GB 3200C16D Ripjaws $295.00
GPU Galax Geforce RTX 2080 EX 8GB $989.00
Case Corsair Crystal 280X Black $159.00
PSU Seasonic 750W G Series $179.00
Cooling Noctua NH-L9x65 Low Profile $79.00
SSD 2 x Crucial MX500 500GB M.2 $210.00 total
OS Windows 10 Home 64bit $149

Brings me to a total of $2467.00

Now I just have a BenQ 27" GL(numbers here) Monitor not a gaming monitor so saw there was a ASUS ROG STRIX 31.5 2k 144hz monitor at Umart for $699.00 that I may have to consider - But could this just come later? Am I really going to suffer with my standard monitor

I have been out of the game of PC's for a while so not really sure on the latest tech, or compatibility issues etc so anything obvious you see let me know or even just thoughts on particular parts you may already have.

Any other thoughts would be appreciated. Anything thats overkill, or replace the CPU cooler with something like a liquid cooler? Saving money is always good, but I wouldnt mind having the PC for quite some time so dont want to have to upgrade anytime soon after purchase

Thanks everyone

    AMD CPU. Forget Intel.

Why would you not consider AMD. AMD is now ahead of the game with better core and thread count.

WOW! You can afford to put in 32GB Of RAM! I only have 16gb. :C
    PS
Isn’t 32GB overkill even for modern age games??

    • The 32gb ram is mostly to make sure you don't run into ram limits when multi tasking i.e doing some gaming and other stuff in the background like web browsing, music, messaging, other system programs.

My computer is sitting at 12.7gb ram with chrome open (20 tabs with 1 playing music) all my gaming platform programs (steam, origin, epic, gog, battlenet, uplay) and my antivirus/antispyware/network monitor in the background with discord.

When I run a game it easily goes to above 16gb system ram but yeah 32gb is overkill maybe 20gb to 24gb is more ideal.

I have some other quality of life programs in the background to make things smoother like shareX, Ditto, CCleaner and some messaging apps like Viber, Whatsapp, Skype, Discord.

And probably some other background stuff I can't remember right now that are not in my notification tray.

But yeah 16gb would make my computer have to dial it back down a bit.

      • 16GB is more than enough for a gaming PC.

Computer will use up what ram you have by caching things etc so just looking at free ram doesn't tell you a lot.

  • This is just stupidly overkill… lol

Why waste all that money… you arent going to max out games…

    • This is what I need to know lol. I haven't bought a PC for a good 6 years so no idea what is considered good. The more I look at it I am thinking of dropping a few things.
Ram reduced to 16gb and cheaper
      1 SSD
Might look at dropping to the 2070 or even 2060
      Smaller psu

And by the sounds of it wait for the new ryzen

Lol this isn't overkill what I have was way to fking Overkill and still is 2 or so years later haha.

CPU 7700k running @ 5.1ghz after it had been Delid
Video Card Asus ROG Strix GTX 1080 SLI
Motherboard Asus ROG Maximus IX Formula
      HDD Western Digital Black 4TB
      SSD Samsung 860 EVO 2 x 1tb M.2
PSU Corsair HX 1000i 80 Plus Platinum Power Supply
      Case Phanteks Enthoo Evolv ATX
Gaming Monitor Acer Predator x34 running @ 100htz

With running various mods such as

      Additional Addons
      Motherboard Water-cooling: EK Monoblock
      Memory Water-cooling: EK Monarch System
      SLI Bridge: EVGA Pro Triple
Liquid Cooling Monitoring & Control: Aquaero 6 Configuration
      Lighting: Fabwerk
      Dual Custom WaterCooled Loops

Will all custom build, extreme Overclocking liquid cooled everything around $15k with I spent so damn much I cooled the memory cause fk it lol. With newer hardware this would be total overkill tbh

        Cool story.

  • You're nuts if you go Intel over Ryzen TBH.

July 7 new Ryzen line is out, by all early reports they're going to trounce Intel for price and performance.

I would absolutely go a Ryzen build.

  • +3

You know what you are doing. Your build is fine. Most of the advice here is rubbish.

I would use one 1TB drive instead of two 500GB. Keep the rest of your build the same as originally posted.

In the Crystal Series 280X I would use two NF-S's on the bottom and leave off the included LL120 fans as the bottom fan filter looks far easier to clean.

If you want a new, 144Hz monitor, consider G-Sync. Most games will 'only' run at ~100Hz at 1440 with a 2080 using ultra settings. A G-Sync monitor will smooth out the FPS changes dramatically. A 'G-Sync compatible' monitor is different and will not perform as well.

You are building a gaming PC, so wait until late July as:

    1) AMD said they are releasing a RTX 2070 beating card (the RX 5700 XT) for $250US cheaper than a 2070 on July 7th. It has anti lag???

    2) Nvidia is expected to release a 2070 Super and a 2080 Super in July as a response, with both expected to be ~10% faster than the standard cards.

    Response to the silly advice:

Ryzen 3000 is a silly reason to wait, as the Ryzen 5 3600 has the same recommended price as the 2600. The 3600 is only expected to be 5% faster than a 9400F, while motherboards are expected to be significantly more expensive and we can expect launch/hype tax.

Halving your memory is silly as new consoles are being released next year. Expect RAM usage to increase soon.

Reducing your power supply is silly because most PSU's are most efficient at lower loads. The extra expense will be saved with reduced energy wastage.

A bigger heat sink is silly because you chose a 65W CPU. Your cooler would even be fine for a 100W CPU in most cases.

An nvme drive is over kill. You don't need the extra bandwidth. SSD's provide amazing latency. Pick the biggest cheap SSD you can afford and keep a back up.

Upgrading the motherboard chipset would be a waste of money for your use case.

9700k/kf's are $600. I can't justify $350 for two extra cores and 800mHz extra boost clock in a gaming PC. $350 would be better put towards a 2080 Ti

Do not buy an AIO cooler. They perform worse than towers and when they fail they kill hardware.

    • The current Nvidia cards all support Freesync, and a Freesync monitor would probably be several hundred dollars cheaper than G-Sync.

I do agree though that anyone spending more than a couple of hundred dollars on a graphics card should be looking at a Freesync (or G-Sync) monitor.

  • I Would get rid of the x2 SSD's and get an M.2 NVMe seeing as your board supports it. The Samsung 1TB Evo Plus is $325 with a $35 rebate and the speeds are insane:

  • 32gb ram lol are you doing high end video editing ?

    I have a 6 core I5 w stock cooler
    8GB ram
    Samsung NVM 500
    1080
    Dell 144hz qhd

I can run all my games on ultra and and get about 100 fps. With no issues ram runs about 90% so I can always add more in the future.

  • +1

i would look at ryzen, you would get way better value out of it, also 16gb is enough unless you are doing video editing.

  • seems p good. i5 is hexacore nowadays so it should have pretty good longevity. i'd personally go with 9600k since you can get a good +500Mhz on all cores if you win the silicon lottery.
alternatively you could wait for zen 2 to come out on 7/7 to see if it affects intel CPU prices or offers better bang for buck than the i5.

i'd definitely stick with the 2080 RTX since ray tracing seems too good to miss out on.

PS4 pro or PS4 for light and casual gaming, I find it so much more fun and social than pc. It can run all the games really well on tv.

  • +1

Mate have you looked at Techfast? Can't beat them on value at all. I would get a system from them then add in your specific parts that you want.

  • This is my completed build from a few months back. Running a 1080p 144hz freesync monitor, GPU pushes 100+ frames on ultra settings on almost all games. Can't comment on 1440p.

Build is a little different as it is a mITX build.

    https://pcpartpicker.com/b/mGzYcf

    • To comment on you monitor, if it's a 60hz monitor there is a ridiculous different between 144hz and 60hz. I'm not one to fuss about that sort of stuff most of the time, but it is a MASSIVE difference, I couldn't go back now.

If you're only experience is with 60hz panels, you don't know what you're missing out on yet. You could wait it out and purchase at a later date. But just be aware that your monitor may only display 60fps when the GPU could be pumping out double that. Make sure you have VSync turned on, otherwise you may see tearing if your GPU does push out more and your monitor is capable of displaying.

    • Sh1t I like the look of this! - I might build something for my partner in that little case with a lot cheaper components

Probably with a GPX 1060 or something similar

      • The Thermaltake Core V1 case is quite versatile and can cater for most full size GPU's. Restricted to roughly 40mm width though. The 2060 Gaming OC GPU I have is 40.4mm and just scrapes in to the slot.

The case is available around the $65 mark at most retailers that I've looked at.

  • Well after going through all the comments my pre-wait for new ryzen and new GPU's build has come down to this. I will do up another one once July passes and see what the go is

    Intel i5 9400F - $248
ASUS TUF Z390M - $239 - Figured I would upgrade this to future proof
    G.Skill Ripjaws 16gb - $135
Asus RTX2060 6GB - $495 - Cant justify the price of the 2070 for not that much performance
    Corsair Crystal 280X - $159
    PSU - Corsair 650W TX650M - $135 - Dropped down from the 750W for $40 cheaper
Noctua NH-U9S - $95 - This seems to be the only one that will fit in the case
    Crucual MX500 1TB M.2 - $185
Windows 10 - $149 - May end up going down the ebay route

    Total price is $1840.00

Will come up with a new list once the new stuff comes out - Will probably change everything again haha.

    • You can buy legit windows keys from Reddit and other Microsoft products too.

It costs like $40 and you get the key in 24hrs. Just make sure you pay through paypal to cover yourself. I bought mine and have had no problems since.

      https://www.reddit.com/r/microsoftsoftwareswap/

Also, well done on thinning down the price! Like everyone said, wait and see what AMD has to offer and decide what you want to do afterwards, who knows intel might drop their prices more :P

      Good Luck!

      • They're not legit. They're stolen corporate MSDN or volume licensing keys. Still risky.

        • ehhhhhh .. seriously. So I got really lucky then..

          =\

    • That build looks great.

Make sure you get a 1440p 144hz monitor asap.

  • Don't buy 2x 500GB HD's, you will be forever running out of space on one or the other and shuffling things around between them.

Get a single 1TB or even better 2TB SSD and be done with it.

  • As galaxy doesn’t provide warranty in Australia, I suggest to choose our colorful 2080 CH. It’s about same price as galaxy without any fancy stuff however it comes with 3 years local warranty. :)

  • pretty solid. i'd recommend scaling down to 16gb ram unless you are doing some crazy workstation/video editing stuff. also, dont buy windows 10 at retail price, you can get it for like $30 on sites like g2play
