2 Week Trip Suggestions in Sep-Nov (Vietnam?)

Hi Ozbargainers,

I'm planning on going away on holiday sometime towards the end of the year with my girlfriend for a couple of weeks. I've done a decent amount of travel in the past but not too much in Asia, so this is what i'm kind of leaning towards. Budget between $5k-$8k for the both of us.

At current Vietnam seems to be the front runner but would love to hear everyone's opinion and experiences. As well as any hot tips for finding potential deals.

EDIT: I have $5k available as a gift to fully or partly cover flights/accommodation. Another way to put it - if you had a 2 week holiday somewhere in the world where would you go?

Cheers

Vietnam is very cheap. My wife and I stayed for one month and only spent $2k staying in 3 star hotels and also included a return flight to Phu Quoc staying oat a beach resort for a few days. Flew in to Hanoi and out from Ho Chi Minh.

    • Yeah I figured could do it a lot cheaper. Getting $5k as a bonus from work so would need to spend it all in one go kind of thing.

      • In that case perhaps you should consider going somewhere a bit more pricier. Vietnam is dirt cheap and you may actually struggle to burn through 5k in 2 weeks without wasting it aimlessly. It might be better to plan a 2 week trip to Japan where you the money will go without you trying too much. Vietnam is a kickass place but it's where you go to save money (been there three times and going again in August).

There’s a few Vietnam and SE Asia deals on Travelzoo at the moment for your dates.
    https://www.travelzoo.com/au/collection/holidays/?pageType=H…

Thailand is also an option- Centara resorts are having a birthday sale, with all resorts on sale for 3600THB for travel to Oct. https://www.centarahotelsresorts.com/featured-packages/36th-…

Hawaii has also had some decent flight deals lately- but accommodation and shopping will be a bit of a shocker with the exchange rate.

You could also jump on the cheap AirNZ flights to Houston ($931) and fly down to Mexico. We stayed at an all-inclusive in Los Cabo’s and it was superb! Also lots of cheap last-minute cruise fares out of Galveston, which is only an hour outside of Houston. (Plus it has NASA!)

September can be pretty wet in regions of SEA. You'll wanna check the weather for the time-period before locking in a destination.

Did Vietnam a few years ago and loved it, would go back again at the drop of a hat.

We did Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau in May this year and enjoyed that too, though with the current protests in HK at the moment you would need to look into that.

China was also fascinating, did 3 weeks over there and can't wait to get back.

I went to Malaysia for 2 weeks in 2014. It was great. KL, Phuket, Langkawi and Kota Kinabalu. The food was excellent, there was lots to see and do and it's just a pretty nice place in general. If you have to spend the $5k in one go it might be tough because it's a pretty affordable place.

Other places you can easily spend 2 weeks that I've been to:
Thailand - Chiang Mai and Bangkok were pretty cool, also went to Koh Samui which was good but much like every other beach destination.
Vietnam - 2 weeks actually probably isn't enough time really, you'd only do a good job of covering a few places.
HK + Taiwan + Macau - You can do like 4-5 days in HK, 1 day in Macau and the rest in Taiwan, lots to see and do, I went around the whole island and hit up Taipei, Kaohsiung, Tainan and some small town on the east side I can't remember the name of.
Laos/Cambodia - combining these places would probably hit 2 weeks, I don't 2 weeks in either would be great though.

If you want to burn through the money, 2 weeks in Singapore would probably do it :)

    Have fun!

  • If you do go to Vietnam, and you have 'money to burn', stay at a nice hotel. I like the Majestic in HCMC, old French Colonial restored, because it had the crap bombed out of it by the French then the Americans.
