Using a VPN to Watch UK TV Shows

Hello

I have just signed up with the recent Pure VPN deal. I would like to watch some UK Tv shows. BBC iplayer, Channel 4 and ITV on my iPad.

Not sure how to set this up really. Most of these Tv stations say you need flash player or app but then I can’t download the app in this region. Do I need to watch in a PC or Chrome Book? Also am I better to make up an email address or shall I still use my usual one which I think would say registered in Australia.

I also have a Netflix account, is it easy to switch to UK and US Netflix?

I’m sure this is pretty simple stuff but my first time doing so.

Cheers for any advice

From memory, you might still struggle to watch the UK channels, especially ITV and Channel 4, as downloading the app blows your location.

I recall that even the BBC needs you to register with a UK (physical) postcode / address.

I'm investigating Acorn TV for our UK viewing, but I'm not sure it is current enough in its programming to satisfy our needs.
Otherwise it is hoping that ABC and SBS bring us the shows relatively quickly.

I have a valid UK post code so have signed up to BBC iplayer . I'm really wanting to access 'BBC Bite size' which are educational programs for kids. They have their own website but it still says not available for this region so I will have a try and see if the vpn works. I also wanted to access 'Newsround' as my young son wants to watch the news and Australia doesn't have the equivalent kids news program. Maybe using a vpn on a chromebook might work.

        youtube-dl works.

I pay for a month on a cheap VPS, install YouTube-Dl, download what I want to the vps and then push to my home. I do it a lot for CBeebies.

Just tried it for BBC KS1 phonics video, worked fine. My method Via my Mac using Chrome with the PureVPN plug-in, selecting UK then BBC iPlayer website.
Also just tried 'Newsroom', worked fine.

Just to add to this, my goal, maybe similar to yours.
I'm trying to get a single box to watch UK on-demand TV via a set-top box. So have bought a VodafoneTV box via OZbargins, to try to achieve this and now PureVPN to try this.

        • Thanks just tried again and it is working, think I ma going to keep pure vpn and try it out over th next year. I would be interested in knowing of the vodafone box does work out for you. Cheers

          • @patthecat: So far very good via kodi.
Having a few Android TV vs Android mobile/tablet app issues. Anyone able to point me to a resource/guide/info on trouble.

You need to meet GETFLIX :- https://www.getflix.com.au/

VPN's are useless, DNS foolery is where this is at. Getflix works like a charm

    • Except: "The iOS app can be downloaded with a UK iTunes account." for the UK streams OP was looking for.

      • Just use the website, their app is the same anyway

    • is this to access overseas netflix? If I cant get the VPN to do what I want I will just cancel it I think.

Netflix is painful, personally I gave up bothering. It’s cat / mouse via the VPN. Some VPN providers sell you a dedicated IP Address, but expensive and still gets blocked from time to time

Getflix was originally designed for Netflix but it became too difficult to get around Netflix's smarts. But Getflix works great for watching UK TV channels. I use it on a Samsung bluray player (after switching regions on the player). BBC, Channel 4, ITV etc. It's not a VPN, but a DNS "fooler". However, they do provide a VPN as part of the package.

    • VPN's are useless

According to your link Getflix uses a VPN …

  • I just connected purevpn to the uk and tried the BBC biteside website and it still knows I am not in the UK, so think I will cancel the vpn subscrition as it seems to be rubbish.

We use Getflix Smartdns, no need to use Getflix VPN . Have old PC connected via hdmi to TV. Use https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/quick_set_dns.html to quickly change between Getflix dns and ISP's. I bought a lifetime licence for USD35 a few years ago, but they seem to have stopped doing that now. Google Getflix deals/coupons/discount to see what they are doing now. I bought it from https://deals.ghacks.net/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&query=vpn. Do some research on those listed, and if they still look good see whether they do a trial to try before buy. VPNs are hit and miss when it comes to accessing overseas TV so always best to try. Wife watches Corrie and I peruse US Prime.

Kinda wierd how violating intellectual property rights is cool if using a VPN that drains the providers bandwidth but violating those rights by copying a file from someone else's server is the end of the world, terrorism, downloading a stolen car and other crazy ideas.

Problem with most vpns in regards to Sky, BBC, channel 4 etc is that most vpn's only offer a few UK based ip's. As soon as these ip's are known to the companies, they just ban the ip range.

  • I have NordVPN and don't have any trouble watching ITV via Chromecast, works like a charm and sport, like the British Touring Car Championship, is a good live watch on Sunday night.
But I can't connect to the BBC, it asks me for a TV licence number, which I don't have. Anyone know a way around this?

    • It asks you whether you have a tv licence and you say yes, no need for licence number.

      • Well don't I feel like a bloody idiot. Thanks for that langh
