I use this one to turn my shed outdoor spotlights on/off. Works great from inside the house and can light up the backyard 30m away. Also use one in the attic for turning off the light - which we often forget to turn off.

I have one on a second wifi router that is used by my kids. When they're being shit bags I can instantly cut them off, without losing wifi to my own devices.
I also have one on the TV for the above reason, and one on my pool pump (in a DIY waterproof box) for when I'm too lazy to walk outside and turn it on/off

      • Brilliant! (literally)

        • What's even more brilliant is when you can do it from far away. I was at a conference in Paris last year and the wife messaged saying the kids were playing up. My colleagues were all suitably impressed when 2 taps on my phone turned off their xbox on the other side of the planet!

    • Use to turn on and off computers, lights, a radio etc

    • I've got speakers on my PC that have their own IEC power lead and power switch on the back. It's a pain to switch both on and off manually. Now got the speakers hooked up to this and can control via software (Home Assistant, got a switch to turn whole office off at once).

      • If speakers are only on when PC is on, there are other simpler solutions.
One is a master/slave powerboard. When master appliance powers down, anything plugged into slave sockets automatically shuts down.
Were free in a promotion. Been using them for over a decade on entertainment unit, etc.

  • Anyone know of cheap Homekit compatible smart plugs like this?

    • +1

Pretty much anything can be made to work with Homekit if you don't mind a bit (or rather, a lot) of hacking around.

    • Ikea tradfri is a good candidate now that it supports HomeKit, but I don't see the plug on the Australian Ikea website. Also ikeas smart bulbs are Edison screw only.

A good out-of-the-box solution was/is the HomeKit WeMo Bridge

It lets existing WeMo products join a HomeKit setup and be used as accessories in HomeKit Scenes. I added one and it immediately made the WeMo wall switch that I wired in back in 2014 able to be used through HomeKit:

"hey siri turn on the patio lights"

Sadly, Belkin pulled WeMo out of the Australian market, and the only way to get their otherwise excellent Wi-Fi switches was eBay, where they were going for crazy money. (Probably because they're one of the few decent HomeKit compatible Wi-Fi switches.)

WeMo itself is going strong in the US, with newer native HomeKit products that don't need the bridge. Hopefully Belkin will bring them back to Australia if they didn't get too burnt the first time.

can i set this on a timer to turn on at a specific time each day and then off after 2 hours?

    • +2

Yes you can from within the app.

    • Yes, I do similar for my lights.
but use sunset as on and a particular time for off.

      • Can you randomise both the on and off times? You know, to give the effect that someone is actually home.

        • Doesn't look like,
Triggers can be Weather, sunset/sunrise, device or schedule.
schedule only has an on/off time you can set and when to repeat.

    • Yes you can set a schedule so that it turns on at specific time and off at a specific time 2 hours later. You can also create Scenes like turning on at sunset at your location.

Is this a ‘sale’ price from Bunnings, or the new regular price down from $20?

  • Does anyone know a way to setup a remote (smart) wall switch to turn these ones on or off. I have a led lamp (no replaceable bulb) and I would like to use on of these smart plugs for it. But would also love to have a wifi switch blu-tacked on the wall to switch it on/off.

Does anyone have an idea for this setup?

    • Something like this? https://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/50338853/ though again seems compatible only with ikeas Edison screw smart bulbs

      • Yeah like that. I have the IKEA ones and they work great, but they aren't compatible with this plug as far as I know

        • What about with the gateway? I’m not really sure what the gateway does, it says it’s needed to control multiple bulbs at once.

          • @AustriaBargain: To use any IKEA smart thing (TRADFRI) you need the gateway. It controls the devices. If IKEA sold smart plugs (they do in Europe), I could conect it to their buttons and it would be perfect. But IKEA devices don't really interact with any other devices as far as I know (gateway included), unless you hack them. I don't want to spend the time/effort needed to hack it, I'm just looking for a solution that works.

    • I have a similar setup using Domoticz, raspberry pi zero w, Xiaomi gateway, Xiaomi signed switches.

Easiest way however is just to buy the Xiaomi gateway, Xiaomi switches and Xiaomi zigbee or Wi-Fi socket.

      • Xiaomi switches and plug might be the solution then. Thanks.

      • Hi, I looked for it in Google but the documentation is not very clear. Can the Xiaomi buttons interact with other devices that are not Xiaomi, like this plug? Do you need to hack them, or is it straightforward and ready for it?

        • If you want the Xiaomi buttons to interact with other things (like these switches), you'll need a third party automation system like Home Assistant or Domoticz that brings them together and allows you to setup IFTTT automations. I have this that links a xiaomi button to the brilliant plugs using home assistant.

If you don't want to go down that track you can stay within the xiaomi ecosystem and buy the xiaomi gateway and combine their own plug with the xiaomi button and set up automations in the xiaomi app.

          • @NigelTufnel: Thanks for the reply, I'll have a look at Home Assistant and Domoticz. I had a look at Xiaomi plugs but it looks like they are not certified for use in Australia yet (may void home insurance).

  • is this so big that it prevents one from using the second outlet socket? the TPlink ones basically take up x2 outlets due to size

    • Depends on the size of the device you are plugging in next to it, and the spacing on your powerboard or powerpoint. But these are a lot slimmer than then TP-Link, and you shouldn't have a problem plugging in most things next to them.

    • The TP Link one still accepts a regular plug next to it, they are massive but (for better or worse) they still out quite a bit too.

    • Can be abit of a squeeze but generally you can use the second wall outlet socket.

  • got it i just ordered one. thank you

  • Wow, I just bought one on Sunday for the original $19. It's a great device; I set it to turn the heater on shortly before my alarm goes off in the morning.

  • MyTP-Link HS-110 lost WiFi connection after few days of use & have to figure out how to reset. Simple reset button didn't work. Is Brilliant reliable?

    • +1

Could be an issue with your AP? Reset it or check for firmware updates.

      • Just reconnected, but still showing Local only (blinking Green/Amber). Will have to work with the Router if there's some configuration tweak.

    • +1

Will it let you connect over 5ghz wifi or only 2.4?

      • In the manual is says 2.4GHz It lost connection & now turned to Local only.
Will need to play with the router.
Never have problems with Yeelight or Google speakers.

    • +3

I've had several Brilliant plugin running for i guess 6 months. Some are on timers, some switch based on IFTTT triggers, some sunrise/sunset and all are controllable via Alexa. All plugs have been rock solid with no failures so far.

    • The time was not syncing. OK now after I removed the device via Kasa, reset & reconnected (it remembered the password & the firmware upgrade).
Also noticed that HS-110 has 3yr warranty vs 1yr for Brilliant - so with having to use different app, I might stay with the HS110 until better device or price Ozbargain me.
      Thanks for the help.

  • if i have more than one of these .. can they all be turned on and off from the same app.

Also is there an app that aggregates all smart devices into one app?

    • +2

Link to Google Home and then you can set up custom routines if you want to turn a bunch on or off at the same time.

    • +1

Google Home handles everything really well. You can turn on or off all devices in your home, or in a specific room, pretty easily. The routines that PinzVidz mentions also works pretty well, which you can also add in any number of other functions.

  • No online orders + delivery?
    Bunnings is a dinosaur…

    • Masters had those and it's now a fossil.

      • Yeah it's a shame we lost Masters. Competition is good for us. I bet Bunnings would have these features if Masters had stayed.

    • Where I am (Qld), I was able to order the TP-Link switches a month or so ago. I could select delivery of click + collect.

  • +1

I use this plug to control my aquarium LED lights and air pump. Works great so the fishies only get 6h of additional light and bubbles per day. Other than that i hae a spare which i havent found a use for.

  • +1

I don't like to overcharge my devices, especially phone or laptop. I prefer to use it all till the very end before I fully charge them and not over charge them. Maybe it's just my old school belief rather than a fact that overcharging phone, reduces battery life. I want to limit the time my phone should charge while I am sleeping. That will be my use for it.

    • +1

old school belief rather than a fact that overcharging phone, reduces battery life.

Battery management systems integrated into the battery prevents overcharging, so you don't have to worry about it exploding (so long as the protection circuit does what it's supposed to do)

However it is true that charging your batteries all the way to 100% stresses the battery and it's actually much happier to sit around 50 to 80% charge. I also use a TP-Link smart plug to charge my phones partially and rarely do I charge it all the way to full.

      • I'm not disputing the advice, but it's interesting how little information/advice there is on treating Lithium Ion batteries.

As in, all articles I've read on the subject (as well as the two you've quoted) have Battery University as their single reference. In fact, I don't think I've found much source material that isn't Battery University.

    • +2

A new feature in iOS 13 is better battery management so if you plug the iPhone in overnight, it’ll charge to 80% and then hold it there before finishing off the remaining 20% before you wake up.

Don’t know how it will work in reality but that’s the premise.

    • +1

If your android phone is rooted get Battery Charge Limit from PlayStore or XDA. It will stop charging your phone at whatever battery level you set. I usually limit the charge to 80%.

    • With modern lithium batteries in smartphones, it's actually not good to constantly run them down to empty.

    • I've read on numerous occasions that you shouldn't run your lithium batteries below 40% very often, if you're looking to maximise battery life. It's almost like that 40% should be considered like a reserve tank.

Just went to the Mile End store and the lady scanned it at the regular 19.78 price. I showed her the website and for some reason she price matched the $15 and also did a 10% price beat on their own price?
Got one for $13.50, will post receipt when i get home.

    Edit. Here you go

  • +1

Am I the only one thinking $15 sounds way too much for this?

  • Can anyone tel me if this can be configured to turn off a given time (say 1 hour) after being manually turned on?

The Wemo had this function and it meant I could manually turn on my heated throw blanket at the switch (rather than the hand control) and not have to remember to turn it off again.

    • +1

You can but you need to set the timer each time in the app.

  • Another idea; I use with these on the floors of my townhouse. The kids have a habit of leaving things on. If we're on the ground floor, I just use these to turn off anything running on the first floor and vice versa. I know, it might seem lazy at first, but if it takes 20 trips up and down the stairs a day to turn things off, it's better to automate the process.

  • Do these work with Tasker at all?

  • bunnings went to two stores - cant find them even though showing stock …

officeworks will price match and 5% less, just grabbed 6.

    • Took me a while too, as they weren't with the other plugs where they said they were. But because they're on promotion they were having on one of the poles close by.
Stupid. Took me about 10 minutes and asking someone.

    • when I went last time it was posted, they had so many in stock that they were on the end of the aisles.

    • Got mine today, spent some minutes looking around like silly wiener. This thing would be located at Home Automation section.

Pretty shitty app's UI tho. And asking to register real email is a no no. So I used '10 mins email'.

      • Bad move, you dont want your smart gear connected to an email you dont even have control over and that anyone can access.

Dont use the Brilliant app. Just install and use the SmartLife app which can also be used for hundreds of other smart devices from water leak detectors to thermometers and lights. Register your SmartLife account to a secondary email and this one account/app can work with tons of things as you add more devices in the future.

        • It's okay, let em hackers control my display cab lights. :P

Thx, will that that app now.

  • Bunnings Springvale (VIC) has plenty of stock

  • Thanks OP. Went to Officeworks and got 4 with price beat.

  • +1

Anyone having issues pairing them? I had one from a while back that’s fine. I’m trying to add two new ones into the mix and no dice. I’ve tried 3 different apps, and the one that works is unplugged.. :(

  • Picked one up earlier today

    Just a Q -
I see some people saying they use theirs while not connected to their home wifi (putting it on before they get home or from another country).
From what I can see, these are wifi only? Is that correct? I am using Smart Life app

I tried disconnecting my phone from my wifi (go on 4G) and the commands would not work.

    • It should work, i'm using SmartLife also and have over a dozen devices connected in the app including a number of Brilliant plugs, Mirabella Genio globes etc. They are all fully controllable via the the internet.

The app connects to the Tuya server, which then communicates with your router which then switches the device. So it works the same way regardless if you are connected via wifi or via the network over 4G.

  • got these working with HASSIO really easily by just using the Tuya app instead.

  • Sorry this could be a dumb and noob question but why would manufacturer bother to create their own app when you can just use SmartLife or Tuya apps?

Especially when I see from comments here that data security/convenience is always a concern.

    • Brilliant didn't create their own app. The app is a re-badged Smart Life.

  • I have this and it works great. But im wondering if anybody has review on this Jinvoo one? Seems to be cheaper.

    • yeah i did the same last night… works pretty well with google
