  • Session is the mid strength 4.1%.

IPA and 4.1% - trying to reconcile that one…

      • +3

Session ipas are one of my favorite beers when they're good. Similar taste to an ipa, but you can either enjoy them for longer or not worry as much about having too much.

        • Given that this one is probably a year old, you're not going to get any hop flavor from it.

    • +8

And this it has to said is Goose IPA a less than remarkable ale at full strength let alone mid strength.
The big brewers just can't quite get that boutique IPA flavour hit no matter how hard they try(IMHO) and I guess that's why they buy up the more popular brands.

Pirate Life Double IPA in the big can at 8.8%(I think)is still a lovely beer and the big brewery that bought South Oz's finest hasn't fiddled too much with it. But it still irks that my money is going to the big boys and not the little fellas. Same with Feral beers and several others.

      • Any ale type beers that are aussie in the likes of Dan Murphy's you recommend?

        • +3

It depends on which state you are in but I like Bridge Rd Brewers Beechworth Pale Ale, anything by Balter, Mornington Brewery Brown Ale, Bentspoke Sprocket or Crankshaft, and many others

          • +5

@dazweeja: Bentspoke crankshaft is an awesome IPA, also that 360 lid is a life changer

        • +2

Give the Two Birds Sunset Ale a go. I personally try avoid the big brewers and bottleahops like Dan's but the Sunset Ale is quality.

Basically a Red Ale with Toffee Malt and big Grapefruit hop notes.

I also like Ballast Point Sculpin which apparently is a love / hate beer. Has an thicker, slightly resiny apricot flavour and so far the batches I've had have been ok considering they come from USA and probably sit in the sun out the back of Dan's.

      • +1

The Little guys got there money when they sold. Because people like you bought there goods in the first place. They cashed in, can't blame em

      • +1

Not quite sure if I agree - CUB have fiddled with PL's operations and brewing processes more than a bit. The beer is definitely not what it was a few years ago, but it probably is still ok for the mass market/typical CUB customer who's maybe thinking about dipping their toe into craft beer (however I have also come across a few too many examples of wildly faulty beer of theirs recently).

This is probably a symptom of what's happened since the buyout; CUB has come in and cut corners, cut a bunch of costs, which then leads to these kinds of issues. Worse still, they haven't passed those savings on to the consumer at all and are taking a huge margin on beer that's half as good as it was a little while ago, but at the same price. I know for a fact PL sales are flagging badly and I'm sure this all has a lot to do with it.

My experience with the IPA is that it deteriorates in taste significantly as time goes by. Assuming the same for session IPA. Cheap though.

    • +6

Which is strange given it was initially brewed specifically for the purpose of lasting longer - on the trip to India from Britain. I assume that was because of the high hop content, which is still the case in modern IPAs, so I don't know why they would deteriorate quicker…

      • +4

The beer itself doesn't deteriorate, as the hops do still act as a preservative. That being said, the volatile oils that are associated with hop aroma and flavour will decrease in potency. Long story short, the beer does still last a long time, just not with the flavour that modern consumers are expecting.

read this with interest, but i disagree with calling it a myth straight out from what i've read. early ipa certainly wasn't unique in being the only extra-hopped style, but it's not really a "myth" as the core of the claim remains true - "By the 1760s, brewers were advised to ramp up hopping rates when shipping beer to India and the Caribbean, the antiseptic flowers safeguarding beer—porters and pale ales alike—from spoilage." - site. although the 'brewed specifically' idea implying a whole new genre was created for the first time / or only IPA was doing this technique - is misleading.

          • @yupyup:

Which is strange given it was initially brewed specifically for the purpose of lasting longer

This is the comment I was responding to.

            Myth.

I don't disagree with the rest of what you said.

    • +3

This is very true. Fresh is best. Even though it is funny given the origin of IPA as @pdmathieson noted.

  • PLINK code works for >$120 spend

  • Great deal on this beer. Thanks OP. Should be drunk by the best before anyway!

  • Cheers OP - in for 1

  • Just be aware this is brewed locally in Australia and not imported.

  • Just as the Doss Blockos was getting low the fridge is re-stocked

u bloody legend now i got this to go with the one from a few days ago, enough beer to last about… well, 1 day, lel

  • Great buy. Love the goose. Managed to get some when they still had some available.

Cheap piss get on it boyz

    Doesn't post to Tassie :(

    • Isn’t this made in Tasmania? Haha

      • Down at the Cascade Brewery they sell it and serve it.

I did the tour a few months back and I can't remember if they brew it there or not. I know CUB bought the company and then started brewing Cascade interstate. Perhaps it is.

  • GOT 4 CASES.
cant wait drink all of them.

  • Thanks op, ordered a carton. 4.1 isn’t too bad for a session ipa

  • +1

"In 2017 Goose Island is proud to be brewing our newly developed Midway Session IPA in Australia. APPROACHING BEST BEFORE 20/07/2019"

hahaha, two year shelf life… pretty sure even tooheys new only claims one-year shelf life!

  • 3 months is about the limit for IPAs before they've really dropped off

  • Would Dan Murphy price match this? Could get a longer best before

    • They might, but if they are switched on they would know that CUB really only discounts on Ebay for short dated and clearance products. You can usually pull a swifty on them though, and play dumb if they catch you.

  • These wouldn't taste great even at 6 months old (hop deterioration)

  • +1

Every beer from Goose Island except Goose Island Bourbon County Stout is rubbish. Stay away.

  • +1

As far as I can tell this has been relisted at the same price but no longer has the 'APPROACHING BEST BEFORE 20/07/2019'

Might be a better time to get on board!!!

    • Mine arrived today. Best before date of 13/09/2019. I ordered early too.

      • Oh nice 👍 mine hasn't even been picked up yet! Looks like I won't be drinking until next week!!

        • +2

Inner Sydney area, postage is usually quick. Let me crack one open and give a review.

      • Same BB for me too.

  • +1

Sorry, called into work. First impression was a screw top lid. I was worried, no good beer ever has a screw top. You can tell that the malts used were cheap and mass produced. There's a hint of IPA hops in the background but it's not enough to be called an IPA. It taste like a Tooheys Extra Dry with IPA flavouring artificially added. Drinkable but not great.

    • Thats pretty scathing…

      • For $33 no complaints. Give it to guests that aren't into craft beer.

  • I’m drinking one now and I like it, mine are actually best before 13 September
