Best Way to Stick It to Attempted Scammy Buyer?

So this is a little odd on a bargain site.

I had a dodgy gumtree user waste 2hrs on/off of my time with negotiations to buy something.

At the end of everything guy sent a fake paypal notification of payment sent. I think this isn't some normal person but someone who probably works with a network since they also have a reply text system.

Anyway, the guy gave me his physical address to send goods to, so I'm hoping I can get him evicted by his landlord or investigated (it's a unit address so I assume there's someone (him or his minion) actually living there).

Any way to quickly and effectively do this?

Would calling up real estates around the unit be helpful, or would they not really care or pass this onto the landlord?

Only reason I don't just want to report to cops is because I think they usually have more pressing matters, and won't investigate this one. I've also heard that cops aren't much help in fraudulent online transactions, even in cases where scammers have rorted several people in their scamming sprees.

Alternatively, what else can I do that makes his life a little more miserable?

Because only I waste my time, nobody else. Hahah.

TLDR: Guy wastes my time, almost takes my precious dollarydoos. Me bad want revenge now.

EDIT: Thanks for your responses guys, got a good chuckle from the salty revenge answers, and others philosophically interesting or informative.

And I'm glad there are people who actually exist that hate scammers and do something about it. Monkhood leave-it-alone mentality sure brings about better mental health for yourself, but being a monk isn't about helping society- it's about withdrawing from it completely. Which in my opinion is a bit removed from altruism.

I learned a bit from this thread, on complexity of scamming operations that changed my initial assumptions- I know the address given is probably not the scammer him/herself.

For now, going to just leave it at my reports to gumtree, acorn and paypal and hope the guy has a good few setbacks to prevent scamming for a while.

Won't be responding to new comments as lifes gotten a lot busier.

But will def keep everything in mind once I do decide to continue this side hobby!

Thanks tightarses of Australia.

Lol you angry that someone wasted 2 hours of your time. In response you want to waste more time? Your poll options are also not great.

4.Leave him alone and move on

    A story for you:

A senior monk and a junior monk were traveling together. At one point, they came to a river with a strong current. As the monks were preparing to cross the river, they saw a very young and beautiful woman also attempting to cross. The young woman asked if they could help her cross to the other side.

The two monks glanced at one another because they had taken vows not to touch a woman.

Then, without a word, the older monk picked up the woman, carried her across the river, placed her gently on the other side, and carried on his
journey.

The younger monk couldn’t believe what had just happened. After rejoining his companion, he was speechless, and an hour passed without a word between them.

Two more hours passed, then three, finally the younger monk could contain himself any longer, and blurted out “As monks, we are not permitted a woman, how could you then carry that woman on your shoulders?”

The older monk looked at him and replied, “Brother, I set her down on the other side of the river, why are you still carrying her?”

Appreciate your story, but this will be a side hobby, I'm not going to be focusing all of my energies on this. Well, hopefully not. The more people who know about the scum that live here the better. If landlord knows, they can spread the word to their loved ones, to their landlord friends etc, agents know, they can prevent him from being rented to by the same organisation.

With police, it'll probably be on his record (if they successfully investigate at all) and due to privacy, nobody else will be the wiser.

My friends once rented to a guy who ended up being a fugitive and serial non rent payer who was hard to get rid of, even in these circs.

        • +8

Dont listen to this guy - I fully support your revenge
Hate bloody scammers, scum of the earth

          • +1

@BanannaMan: Thanks buddy! I think bending over backwards or ignoring others' messed up actions sometimes can sometimes impliedly support them.

        • 9 negs and 1+ (from me) says something about the mindset of Ozbers. I'm actually happy to be in the 10%. Generally you can't go wrong with being in the small minority in just about anything.

    • +31

I am not a monk and don't believe in karma without direct action. I do believe in retribution in the interest of stopping douchebags from pulling the same crap on other people. Sure, I get your point that by letting things go you are happier and can move on with your life unecumbered but still, I can't stand ignoring scammers who are just going to continue doing what they do because of people with this attitude.

      • +2

Yup. Totally agree. And I don't think it's purely retribution if you're doing it in others interests :).

        • +7

just forget those cold heart bitches. Do what your heart feel right mate. I really hate the ways those guys reacted in forums, always "leave it and move on", "suck it up", "why did you do that at the first place", blah blah blah. Jeez, human makes mistake, and not everyone has the same level of knowledge, so you either can sit on your high moral horse and talk shyt or contribute some to the community.
I hate scammers, thieves and shits. you know why? they not only steal money/properties, they make their victims life more misery, wasting everyone time.
          TL,DR: let's screw them

          • +3

@ntt: And leaving the scammer alone just encourages them to keep on trying until they scam their next victim.

If we applied that kind of stupid logic, it would be the same as letting a driver speed in a school zone and not do anything about it because no one got hurt.
Speeding is illegal. Attempting to scam is also illegal.

Can't imagine the idiocy and apathy of these people. Just because OP didn't get scammed doesn't mean they shouldn't do anything about it.
If OP DID get scammed, they'd be all "you deserved it", "You should have seen it coming" , "you shouldn't have sent your details" blah blah. I've seen it so many times here.

    • +1

Thanks for wasting my time with this story - hopefully some good ideas on this thread for retribution.

    • Damn. That F ING deep story. Thank for sharing! Upvote!

    • I honestly don’t get the point of that. Am I an idiot? What is the relevance here? Doesn’t this story imply op is doing something dodgy as well ie carrying the woman?

      • It means stop ruminating and worrying about things haha

  • +20

If you know his address, try to find out his real name.

Everytime you're bored or feeling down, send him a letter asking him "how does a piece of shit feel today".

He has volunteered to be your emotional punching bag so use it.

    • Hahaha. Punching bag therapy. Would, but I'm worried that since he has my PayPal email (real name) that his focus will turn back to hacking or figuring out my other financial/location details. Rather work in the cover of semi anonymity. He probably won't even know who reported him.

      • +5

He wouldn't know who sent the letters.

I'm sure he has attempted/successfully to scam more than one person

        • +1

Ohh lol. For some reason I thought you were referring to email address. Sending a letter achieves too little for my liking though, and I'm not wasting a stamp on the likes of him. I think he would sift through hate mail nonchalantly.

          • +4

@Bargainbeth: $1 to post a letter with, "I think I'll report you to the police", is a great stress relief.

You can't buy that sort of release from Bikram Yoga, craploads of wholesome foods, nor a psychologist.

            … and again, it's only $1.

The psychological damage to the scammer is definitely worth the occasional $1.

            • +2

@[Deactivated]: Haha, trueee, and a whole lot of less work than bikram yoga too! You had me from the fourth time you said $1.

              • +3

@Bargainbeth: Dollar thrills, mate. You don't get that much satisfaction if your threw two 50¢ coins at someone.

                @Bargainbeth: Where is the 4th "$1"? I can only find 3 😂

                • +3

                  @srnoz: I found it!

                  Where is the 4th "$1"? I can only find 3 😂

Also, I argue that resentment would disappear in favour of satisfaction of just desserts being served, once I have at least maimed him in some way to prevent more criminal activity.

Less resources to criminals = a good thing, right?

      • Less resources to criminals = a good thing, right?

It could be a neighbors or 3rd party he is pretending to live at address

If he knows people are not home all day he can stay around on delivery day and get the goods and vanish

    • +6

      ^^^ This
As a practiced scammer he/she isn't likely to do something to give themselves away like giving out their home address.

It's most likely they live in the same unit block or in close proximity where they can monitor and steal deliveries to that address. It would be a complicated surveillance operation to catch them and it's doubtful the police will have the resources to do it.

Report it and move on. Maybe if the police get enough reports and their computers can line up the same street address then it will get some attention, but that's pretty optimistic.

Unless you can give the police a solid identity to go on then the job is just too much work for them to do.

      • +2

Yahh, I gathered from replies to my post that it wouldn't be viable for them or me to do anything meaningful. I think they could catch the guy with a meet up and refund of postage like a below user suggested, though. But I don't think they do this for frauds, only drug users/dealers and other crimes.

  • +5

The police won't do anything about it.

Calling up real estate agents around the scammer's unit wouldn't be helpful as they wouldn't be able to confirm or deny knowledge of the scammer for privacy reasons.

If the scammer is renting their Landlord won't do anything about it if they are paying their rent regularly.

Unfortunately Gumtree has a reputation for scammers, just be more aware next time.

Gumtree is for face to face CASH sales, the ONLY safe way. No Paypal as there is no protection for seller.

Just put it down to a life lesson and move on. Karma will win in the end.

    • -6

Real estate agent might have some kind of duty to report it to the landlord, don't really need them to tell me anything. I need to just find the right one by asking if they rep that address.

Yeah, I'm aware of that. I asked the guy to send through fnf instead.

Fair point about landlord not doing anything if they're getting cash, however.

  • +7

How do you know it's their actual address? Isn't it standard procedure for CC fraud types to just have drop address and master keys for your everyday unit letterboxes?
Imagine getting 'revenge' on some innocent man or woman… I'd necc.

    • +7

Aww, you killed the fun. I don't know it's his real address. Before I posted this, I thought it was their address, or a known friend who may or may not be in on it too. I guess this makes things way more complicated, so I'll probably just police report this and be done.

      • +4

Hey, not all revenge is petty. I like where your head is at.

        • +1

Aw thanks. Wish I could get to a place where I don't care at all about this stuff, but I can't see it being so in the foreseeable future haha. I have enough salt to last at least another decade.

  • +1

don't bother, just move on and forget about him

  • +3

    Not the dollarydoos!!

    • The most valuable of all bills..

      • +1

You may have missed the memo. They’re called Dollar Bucks now.

        • +3

Blasphemy! I still have 90 dollarydoos laying around.

  • +10

    send bikies to the address

  • +17

Post an ad on gumtree with his address, selling new iPhone for $600 ;)

    • +5

This. New, anonymous gumtree. Sell things and organise collection. Do it lots of times. Give out his number as yours.

    • +4

Sounds like fun. But then he might scam those new people who contact him though :/. People on gumtree aren't the brightest bulbs. A guy once bought a new iPad off me for rrp, didn't even ask for its receipt.

      • +1

Probably a drug dealer with excess cash and didn't care.

    • +4

I vote against this. As a regular gumtree user, I'd hate to have my time wasted as one of the buyers in this scenario.
You might also be sending innocent people to confront a potentially dangerous person.

      • If a buyer really thinks they can get the newest iPhone for $600, theres something wrong with them too.

    • Or you know, post an ad on some forum, if you want to have a good time go to this address, the more the merrier 😂😂

    • you may just find you have screwed over a perfectly innocent person. quite often the reason these are unit addresses can be because the scammer doesn't live there but has access to the building or mail and simply intends to intercept it.

  • +5

    Move on.

The address will be a drop. The phone no. will be a burner.

    • You can't a phone number without showing license or ID so burners don't exist in australia. Or am I missing something here?

      • Stolen ID perhaps. You can do it over email or phone with the network provider so it's easy if you have a valid ID handy.

  • +4

Under the Ferengi OzBargain rules of acquisition, there is no profit in this.

    • +1

You just broke the first rule of ozbargain acquisitions.

  • +18

Put up Gumtree listing for a $100 Commodore, with his phone number attached, and move on with life

    • I'm worried he'll scam others with his fake paypal email. Gumtree collective ain't too bright.

      • -1

There's scammers all over the world. Cops won't put enough resources into the issue to sort it, or to fine him.

        Just move on with life.

        • +1

Thanks for the input, trying to move on but just… So…. Petty… 😂. Putting in a report can help if multiple people do so, and gumtree or PayPal report them as well.

  • +1

Most likely drop off address from one of the work from home scams.
"Oblivious" people laundering goods and money.

  • +2

go to his house and put shit in the front of his door

  • Stop wasting energy on grudges. It will only make you more frustrated and stressed.

People like this exist, get on with your own life or they are still winning. Even the fact you have posted this is a win for the scammer.

    • +1

Grudges are smudges in the portrait of our life

    • +1

It's not just a grudge. Though partly petty, I was trying to at least hurt the dude so that it could in a small way lead to less potential for scamming.

  • +1

Message him saying this has been reported to Police and Paypal. Then move on.

Trust me - trying to make people's lives miserable can backfire very quickly if they are more petty than you. This guy has your details, and if he's bad enough to commit fraud, he is bad enough to make your life more miserable than you can make his.

    • +1

I know. Was going to do everything anonymously anyway, but have reported to gumtree. But thanks for your input.

      • I would definitely contact PayPal. As they are much larger then Gumtree I would thought they would having more resources and time to spend on it then Gumtree. Also he's using their name on fake invoices, I could see them caring more.

  • +1

Its ScumTree, geez, I'm surprised his unit of currency wasn't drugs or stubbies.

  • +2

Offer to drop goods at place as you will be nearby and give them a refund on shipping. If they drive up, you'll know then it's a drop. Follow them until you find their real place.

Report to police or read other replies.

    • I'm not a local but this would be good service for cops actually, if they did attempt to investigate it!

  • +2

I’m still thinking about the monk story. Solid advice.

All your options are rather FOOLISH and you risk doing yourself some damage.

You said yourself he has already wasted so much of your time.
Why do you insist wasting even more of your time???

Even this post is wasting even more of your time !!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG

Just play the same game and tell him the item has been sent and to expect it in a few days.
The buyer will be left wondering @@##$%%

  • -1

Where is the sent the bikies to his address option

  • +1

All even now. They wasted 2hrs of your time and people collectively wasted 2hrs of their time reading your skewed poll options. Justice served move on.

    Also here's some facts

    1. I'm 100% sure a few intermittent msgs back and forth doesn't add up to 2hrs of time wasting. Complete exaggeration

    2. You obviously have spare time if you posted here and want to spend more time retaliating.

    3. You're not doing this to save others. Don't kid yourself. You're just annoyed and want to stick it to them somehow.

    4. If I had a $1 everytime someone on gumtree wasted my time I'd probably be retired now.(not an absolute fact)

    • +1

      1) Collective 2 hrs isn't that much divided among that many people. Who are you to decide whose time is wasted anyway?

      2) I have spare time but my health is poor and I additionally had a fever while talking to the guy. Yes it was two hours all up if you include the few minutes after each email I waited on his new email for.

      3) Ermm I've saved more than a few people on Fb from scammers before- I sell often and my buyers have sometimes been scammed, as well as other people in the buy/sell communities I'm a part of. So don't kid yourself about your amazing ability to read absolute strangers on an internet forum. Part of it is empathy, part of it is sense of justice, part annoyance. In this particular case, annoyance is the bigger motivator.

      4) great.

  • +1

I may be able to find out the owner’s name and/or the name of a managing agent but I need the address.

    • I used to work with tools to trace people but since left that industry and its tools. If you can turn on Pms, I'll msg you there. Not sure I'm allowed to post his address on here as part of ozbargain rules? Then again might not even be the scammers actual address.
