Help Me Find an Appropriate 4K UHD TV?

Hi all, I'm trying to find an appropriate TV that has the following:

  • 4K UHD
  • HDR+ 10
  • 50" and smaller, preferably ~43"
  • Good Wi-Fi with no errors
  • Can connect bluetooth headphones to it (e.g. Sony WH1000-XM3)
  • Built-in Chromecast and/or YouTube at least
  • I don't mind OLED/QLED/whatever, I think they're all good…? Perhaps OLED is the crispiest with best HDR?
  • Will be using for high quality movies, YouTube and PS4
  • Looking to go cheap as possible but with a known reliable brand, i.e. not Hisense or Kogan, but more so Samsung/Sony/LG etc
  • Budget: $500-$1500, but will get the cheapest one that ticks all the boxes

Cheers! :)

  • You let out the most important criteria… budget.

    • Basically I'll go with the cheapest one that ticks all the boxes and that isn't one of the less-known brands
I'm looking to spend about $500-$1500

Whats the best deal you have found via your own research that ticks all your requirements so we can see if we can find better?

    • Literally none

      • Searching for a unicorn basically?

I don't think you can buy an OLED under 55" and I'm not sure why you're ruling out Hisense. They're at least as good as Samsung and Sony in the same price range and better than LG (not OLED obviously).

    • I'd be cool with ruling out OLEDs as I'd prefer a smaller one

      • I think the biggest difference in non-OLED TVs is if you want to pay for full-array/direct-lit or not. That gives you real local dimming and almost-OLED blacks but they are quite a bit more expensive. I'm not sure what options are available under 55" that are direct-lit though. If there's no suitable options, the Hisense 50R7 looks like it might a good option in the cheaper edge-lit market but there's not many reviews yet.

  • 43” TV? Unless you sit 10cm away from your TV I would grab a quality second hand 1080p TV. On a small TV like that you won’t see the difference and all that extra resolution is just going to mean more compression when streaming resulting in a worse picture.

EDIT: forgot about HDR. If you’re primarily using it for gaming than steaming then fair enough.

    • I have a 55" at the foot of my bed and 4K makes a huge difference. 1080p looks great still, but it looks softer.

      • Yeah 43” is a lot smaller than 55” and having it at the foot of your bed is very close. They say 55”-65” is around the point you’ll start seeing an improvement with 4K.

        • I'd have bought an even bigger one, but my single bed is only 55 inches wide.

          • @AustriaBargain: As you can see in this chart a 55" only becomes worth it at viewing distances below 2m with the average persons eyesight. At 43" it's about 1.5m.

            • @Cheaplikethebird: I wear glasses but my corrected vision is way better than 20/20. 50% of the world is better than 20/20 by definition, the high rate of vision correction in Australia probably puts much more than 50% of people above 20/20 vision, as average vision is determined by what people can see unassisted but people don't take their glasses off or reverse their laser eye surgery when they sit down to watch TV.

  • I have the Hisense series 7 and I wouldn't go any lower picture quality than that. It's good picture, but when a camera pans over a dark scene you notice the backlighting. HDR looks good, a shot of the moon over a dark sky looks great, the moon has a glow haze because it uses zoned backlighting instead of individually lit pixels, but that's more of an aesthetic thing at this price. On a non HDR TV all these scenes look a bit rubbish in comparison.

  • Go for one of the Sony LED TVs - should meet most of your criteria.
