  • WiFi standards are the same around the world so I'm sure it works the same wherever you are.

Previous Ozbargainers have noted that the adapters being sold are genuine. See the comments on

  • Thanks for the reply

Does anyone have any knowlege about this subject? I have a 360 in my bedroom I want to connect wireless to my Belkin modem in my office. If I buy a xbox apadtor it only works on my xbox, can I buy another belkin modem and use that and connect that to my main belkin modem?

    • If you don't have wireless inbuilt, it's highly unlikely you can plug in a USB dongle and make it so (I have never heard of such a feature).
      You have 5 options.
      1) buy a long Ethernet cable and hook up your xbox directly to the modem with the cable snaking down the corridor.. (you can buy thin ethernet cables that you may be able to hide easily)
This will be the cheapest option (~$30) and one of the most reliable
      2) get a cable installer to install a cable into the walls/ceiling between wherever your modem is and wherever the xbox is.
Expensive upfront (~$300) but the most reliable
      3) Buy some powerline ethernet adapters which turn electrical sockets into network sockets (provided the modem and xbox are on the same electrical circuit this could work nicely)
Expensive upfront (~$200) and will need to be replaced at some stage
      4) Buy a new Wireless Modem (wireless G will be fine about $40, but wireless N has slightly better range about $80)and a xbox wifi adapter
      5) Buy a wireless bridge setup (~$150)

(or 6 move the xbox or modem next to the other)

      • I just moved my laptop within reach of my Ethernet cable , bridged Internet connections on my laptop and hey presto you got a wired Internet connection. A little annoying but it didn't cost me money. Bit you should update your console twisty, best option in the longroad

  • Yer thanks for the options

Never seen a thin cable before, to me they are all the same sizes, the ones ive seen and own.

Might just have to get a XBOX Wireless Adaptor but still have second thoughts on this being offical http://www.dealextreme.com/p/dual-antenna-usb-2-0-wireless-n…

    • Thin cable is about 1mm thick.. same width as a normal cable.. (ie ~6-7mm)
You can see what it looks like here:
      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/150-ft-Flat-Thin-Ethernet-Network…
(Note: that's just an example, I haven't bought from that seller and in no way is it a recommendation to buy from that seller..not that I'm aware of any issues with that seller either..) Just search flat ethernet and then however many metres you want. ie 5, 10, 15, 30m

      • Do you know of anyone selling this thin ethernet cables in Australia?

  • Yeah I had this issue, I tried using a standard wireless dongle but it didn't work with the 360. You can use the wireless on your computer/laptop to create a bridge (which I tried for a while) but you'll lag ALOT. Not worth it IMO.

In the end I forked out the $$$ just because I wanted something that I knew would work, and had heard of people having trouble with other solutions.

  • The official adapters (and most of the copies) come with a driver disk that is just for use on the XBOX. That's why you can't just plug in any old usb adapter.

Your other option is to get a wireless bridge - something like this: http://www.netgear.com.au/au/Product/Home-Theater/Networking…

or some form of powerline networking kit: http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/prolist.aspx?mid=01030306

Problem being that these are more expensive than a non-original adapter!

Oh if you have a spare router lying around then you could check out to see if you can flash the firmware with a DD-WRT version (www.dd-wrt.com) this would allow you to turn it into a cheap wirelss bridge.

  • I use eop, works a treat :) something like this - http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/44508 mine is a belkin I got from eBay.

  • I use an Edimax wireless router from MSY ($19) in wireless bridge mode

  • I had the same problem. ADSL/Wireless modem in the study, and Xbox/HTPC in the living room with too many brick walls in between. I had slim Xbox 360 but the wireless antenna in there is just too crappy to pick up the signal.

I ended up getting a wifi extender/repeater, which is basically wifi router in bridge mode but can still take its own clients. So now I have both Xbox and HTPC plugged into the ethernet port of the wifi extender, and my phone/laptop can still get decent signal inside living room.

  • After doing a lot of research I have decided against EOP due to the fact I can plug them into my surge boards. I dont really wanna buy a fake xbox adapter or do I wanna spend $140 for a real one.

Might go this option - XBOX connect via ethernet to a ASUS RT-N12 and this connected via wireless N to my Modem in my office Belkin N300

  • Try buying yourself an Asus RT-N12 wireless router, loading Tomato firmware on it, and run it in wireless to ethernet bridge mode. Then you can have ethernet connections from the router to the XBox and your BluRay, Smart TV, set top box etc. I've just done this myself.

    1. Buy the Asus RT-N12 - available for just over $60 - http://www.shopbot.com.au/m/?m=Asus%20RT-N12
    2. Download Tomato firmware - http://tomatousb.org/download - under the heading "Kernel 2.6 (experimental) for MIPSR2 Routers" get the version called NOUSB Std
    3. Follow the installation instructions for the Asus RT-N16 (a similar but USB equipped router) - http://tomatousb.org/tut:installing-on-asus-rt-n16
    4. To help you configure the Wireless Ethernet Bridge watch this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nIqmXYPUNE
  • Yer I might just do that but was gonna run stock firmware as that works I have read or get DD-WRT on it. Any idea how much power this modem uses? Does the ASUS RT-N12 has a on / off switch on the back of itt?

Also does the ASUS RT-N12 have a Ansutralian plug? I keep reading in the specs pages that is has UK and USA

    • Re: the Asus RT-N12

On the box of it says DC output is 12V/1A, which means it only draws 12 watts of power at the most. There is no on/off switch.

I tried the stock firmware, and it will act as a wireless repeater, but the ethernet plugs are disabled in that mode as far as I can tell.

Mine came with an Australian plug on the (small) power brick, as did the RT-N16 I've been using happily as my main wifi router for the best part of a year, and under Tomato firmware for about 2 months.

  • Why not invest in the adaptor for less then half the price of retail here:

    http://www.ozgameshop.com/xbox-360-accessories/elite-officia…

  • Its not real ScarySpartan. Its a clone. Plus I need to hook up my Blu-Ray player too

    • I wouldn't have thought OzGameShop would have sold knockoffs? I thought it'd just be cheaper by virtue of being UK prices.

How can you tell between a fake and a real one? (Not being contrary, I'm genuinely interested)

I know that dealextreme and places like it sell the chinese knockoff adapters. I think I'd want to stick with an official one personally.

      • I emailed them

  • Or should I go this one rather then the ASUS RT-N12?

  • What did you choose Twisty?

I'm looking for a wireless bridge for my brother. I currently use a WRT54GL with DD-WRT and looking for another for him. They seem to be a bit dearer than the Asus so hoping someone has them cheap as I like the reliability of Linksys.

    • The Asus routers are least likely to brick, I have the WL520GU and it has never been bricked, even on the dd-wrt forums, there has been only one reported case of bricking, given this came out in 2006, that's a damn fine record

  • ASUS RT-N12 Im going for

How do you brick it? I am not the best with this stuff so would it be easy for me to brick it?
