Video baby monitor

Suggestion on a Video baby monitor or maybe a suitable security camera that could do the same thing?

Any other ideas than https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/433387

  • Choice have some excellent reviews. When my first child was born a few years' ago, one of the ones best-rated by Choice was a $50 Vtech one from Kmart. I bought the next model up, which had video and cost around $99. We're using it again for our second child and it's doing fine.

Whatever you choose, avoid ones that connect to the Internet (notoriously crackable) and make sure they use a secure form of communication (like DECT).

  • Second the $99 Kmart one. Does everything you need and well.

A dodgy friend of mine was selling a baby camera with inbuilt smoke detector and smoke detector with inbuilt camera.
    I’ve lost contact with him.
    He might still have a P.O. BOX……

  • Foscam C1 Lite or Foscam C1 and use the Foscam app to monitor your baby.

  • What about an app on a $99 android phone.

Baby monitors are better than a security camera as they have a setting so you don't hear all the minor noises a baby makes during the night, just when they start crying.

  • Any cameras that don't need to be plugged in?

  • I have an Arlo Baby camera which I got on sale for <$200 and have been extremely happy with it. The issue I now have is I want a second baby camera to take on the go when staying at friend's places or grandparents where I don't want to have to fiddle with their wifi but I'm struggling to find anything which can match the Arlo's features/performance.

In case you're wondering, I would rate the Arlo baby camera as having strong video quality at 1080p (it's so hard to go back to VGA quality cameras as my parents have old IP cameras at 640x480!), good IR night vision, inbuilt battery charged via MicroUSB, good app support, good base to sit on so that you can adjust the angle such as when sitting on the edge of a cot, temperature/humidity sensor, etc. The only downsides are probably the battery only lasts a few hours if you don't plug it in (but it comes with an extremely long micro USB cable which I routed using cable covers from Bunnings) and there's a few seconds of delay since video footage is uploaded to the Arlo cloud first (and saved if you want to retrieve it later) and then streamed back to your app/device. Recently with Arlo spinning off to become it's own company out of Netgear I noticed some of the legacy apps or APIs weren't updated and hence stopped working eg Apple TV 4th gen and Google Home Hub. Hopefully these are fixed soon though. I don't really use the walkie talkie mode or the lullabies but they're cool to have I suppose.

Back on topic though, I'm also trying to find something which works well as a portable baby camera and struggling to find anything similar. VTech seems to have good reviews on Canstar but what worries me is pretty much every dedicated baby camera brand has shocking reviews on productreview (Uniden, VTech, etc). I even looked at updated VTech models like the BM5752 but this is reliant on wifi to work, and same with the Lollipop camera, and they both need constant power.
