long story short, my appleTV broke due to an updated OS and apple wont fix it.
So i want something else so i don't give apple any more money.
I was thinking a chrome cast but it is missing one app that i do require. Something to view ABC iView for my kids.
So does anyone recommend anything else that is comparable to the appleTV in ease of use and is good for streaming movies from my plex server, has an apple for ABC iview, and also a service to watch recent movies.
Vodafone TV is pretty good, I have one in the little one's room, almost exclusively for iview & plex.
No need to be on vodafone for internet or mobile, I just walked into store and picked one up for $72
While it might be a slight overkill, my suggestion would be to wait for a deal on the Nvidia Shield Android TV.

I'd say Vodafone tv would be your best bet, just based on recommendations across this site
The other suggestions are pretty solid but you could just buy a second hand working apple tv. Apple won't get your money in that case.
You can Chromecast iView from the standard iView App, but not from the Kids one.
Standard iView App has all the kids stuff on it too.
Otherwise the Vodafone TV is the best bang for buck Android TV device.
I would normally suggest a Roku but they have made it a pain to register them outside of the US due to the deal that Telstra made with them for their TelstraTV boxes.
I think the latest version of the telstra tv (version 3) is the one most like an apple TV (ie. has voice activated searching).
I have a fetch box, a chrome, two telstra tv's (1 and 2) and an an apple tv.
The apple tv wins hands down in terms of pleasantness to use. I'd be buying another one if it broke despite having all the other devices that let me do the same thing. Simply because it is not the same, the apple tv does it infinitely better.
A Telstra TV 3 is the next best alternative. A fetch mightly is good as it records, but fiddly to use compared to an apple tv.

What exactly happened to the apple tv? If its just a failed OS install you can restore it through itunes.

You can download from ABC with YouTube-dl. You can then watch it with Plex.
