Kogan AC1200 Wi-Fi Mesh 3 Pack $99 Delivered @ Kogan

190
SHIPFREE

While looking for something to spend my $35 credit before it expires and came across this one. I believe this is the exact same model from Tenda which seemed to have pretty good feedback from the OzBarganers.

Unlike the Chinese government getting your info for world domination, with these user info is sent back to Kogan to work out the perfect time to price jack smh

these are most likely made in China anyway if you worry about your data and privacy :)

      • They ARE made in China and so do many mobile phones and wifi routers :)

Any comments on how these go, need a mesh setup.

    • I would imagine they are fine if you only stream video and that's it. If you game or transfer files across your network then most of these mesh networks aren't great, and the cheap ones are terrible for it.

      • Taken the plunge, seems to be the rebranded Tenda MW3 from the other deal at Shopping Express that others had good feedback for

  • Are the lan ports gigabit ?

Looked similar to the offer recently from shopping express… but more expensive..

The Tenda MW3 version is good from my experience. I placed them in bridge mode behind an AC68U and they made a massive difference to wifi access within the house. Where I couldn't access from a bedroom 12m away from the router, I now have access from the garage which is 20m away.

    • You can get the AC68U range extenders too if you are worried about performance/features etc.

      • Yes I looked at that (and the 67) but the cost of the 86 just for a single mesh extension didn't make financial sense. I control everything on the 68 inc VPN - the tenda is just a very cheap wifi mesh.

    • I bought two pack Tenda MW3 and it's great! My TV would hunt for wifi connection but now it takes 2 seconds to connect!

  • Probably OK-ish. For those that care id save your pennies for one or two unifi AC nano units if you can. Costs more but a very solid investment

    • @mitchins

Have you got 1 or 2 Nano Hd's set up ?

      • 2x NanoHD, AC lite (workshop)

        • 2 nano HD in single or double storey? Could you get away with having 1 nano HD?

          • @Martop: Single storey but I wanted coverage to extend into the yard and be strong. In hindsight one probably would have been enough but I went over board

  • expecting to be connected to the dreaded NBN in the next 12 months - wait til after for this ?

    • It'll still work for ADSL… wifi 6 mesh compatible models should be more common then though but don't expect much cheaper.

  • Anyone use(d) these? In the instructions it says to connect the primary node to the modem via Ethernet; Does the primary node need to be hardwired, or can it be connected via existing WiFi?

    • +1

Every mesh Wi-Fi system needs one (primary) node to connect to the internet. Performance will be improved if the satellites are hardwired (Ethernet backhaul).

Note that the mesh system IS the Wi-Fi system. You don’t connect it to another wifi system.

  • What's the $35 credit and how is it relevant for someone that doesn't have it?

  • I actually saw this too, but might wait for the Tenda MW3 just because of the VPN server.

This doesn't have it right? It doesn't mention anything.

    • Not sure about that but I believe this is exactly the same product as Tenda MW3, except for the brand, most likely Tenda OEM for Kogan.

      • yeh i read that, but there's nothing like that mentioned. It may be capable of it, but Kogan can choose not to allow that feature

        • Yeah you could be right. Are you not putting them behind a router ? a cheap router would have VPN server built-in.

          • @davidl820: i'm using ISP router (NBN) so I need it for the home phone line, unfortunately.

            Thanks though

  • Has anyone else had issues with these mesh setups? I'm experiencing issues with internet connectivity (wireless reception is showing as excellent all round the house). All mesh nodes are showing excellent connectivity to one another and setup was extremely simple.

It'll just be random times when pages refuse to load or images within social media apps. Extremely frustrating, this was not an issue when using the built-in wifi from our ISP's router (range and wifi reception has been an issue, but when connected well we don't have a single issue).

I've noticed on some occasions that our phones (both iPhone XS') appear to connect to the 2.4ghz band (according to the Kogan Mesh app) rather than the 5ghz band. Only one SSID is shown within the available Wifi Networks? So there doesn't appear to be a way to split them and force connection to a specific band. We've had a lot of issues with saturation of the 2.4ghz band around our house with close neighbours, regardless of the channels set.

Anyone have any suggestions? I'm disappointed but not all that surprised for this price point.

Are you connecting it directly to the NBN modem or are you having the router sit between the modem and the mesh?

I am on the later config and when I first set it up the up load speed was extremely low - almost 0 kbs- when testing with those speed test apps, however interestingly it was able to stream 4k Netflix video.

Since then I tried changing it to be bridge mode then everything works fine, I can test speed with same apps and the numbers were quite close to what I used to get. But, with bridge mode you lose the parent control and a few other features.

I think I also did a few times of power cycles on each node.

Last night I changed the setting to use DHCP again to try parent control, and didn't switch it back to bridge. This morning I tried the speed test app again, strangely, the upload and download speed looked good… I had no idea which step that I have done 'fixed' the problem…

I did noticed with DHCP the loading time for everything takes longer than bridge mode.

Re SSID, On my phone I can only see one SSID but on my TV I see 6 SSID's and can choose which one to connect to.

      • My main node is plugged into our ISP router via Ethernet. It's currently set to DHCP mode, so I might give Bridge mode a go and see if that makes a difference. I don't have a need for any of the other features at the moment so can go without them.

        Thanks for that!

        • That, and perhaps power cycle as well ;)

          • @davidl820: I think changing it to Bridge caused it to reboot anyway. I also had a setting on for it to restart every morning at 3am? Not sure if it's actually doing it.

          • @davidl820: Seems to be working perfectly in Bridge mode now, thanks a lot!
