ATO Tax and BPay Question

Was wondering if i made a bpay payment today can i claim it on this years return or do i have to wait till its received by them. I guess then tomorrow?

    You claim as per the payment date that is on the tax invoice.

  • Technically, it is arguable that you paid it today, as part of the BPAY specifications is payer date.
    The ATO will see that you paid today.

    Whether they recognise it or not is up to them.

    The BPay payment will show a settlement date of the date you completed it (the BPay payment reference number received by the biller has a timestamp within it). In most cases, even though they say it can take 3 business days, if you paid a credit card bill on the due date, it's generally processed with today's date, regardless of whether they received today or not.

    But as said above, I would've thought you'd claim based on the invoice date.
