LG 50PV250 50" Full HD Plasma TV - JB Hi-Fi $969.85 + Free Shipping

90

I've been in the market for a new TV and stumbled across the LG 50PV250 for only $969.85 with free shipping at JB Hifi online. That's around $150 cheaper than anywhere else, and even better with the free shipping.

Sale finishes on Monday the 13th.

Not been a lot of reviews about it, but few reports seem to give it a thumbs up. It doesn't have internet connectivity, but that wasn't really a big thing for me, and it's not 3D, once again something I'm not that worried about.

Jb HiFi online are offering free shipping till mid June for everything.

Few reports give it a thumbs up? well that's not good!

  • Be sure to check the power consumption of the unit. Big plasmas draw a lot of power (+/-400W), much more than LCDs and can cost hundreds of dollars to run each year which can quickly turn a bargain into a money hole.

i guess you pay extra for a better picture :P

    • It's 5 out of 6 stars, so should be ok. Anyone have the link for the govt site where you could search for appliances and look up their energy consumption?

  • plasmas screens used to draw a lot more power, then they were improved, but in general they still consume more than lcd tvs, especially the more wallet friendly led type, having said that plasmas generally have brighter screens and wider viewer angles which may be important to some

I really wish the 'plasma skeptics' could get their comments correct when talking about Plasma power consumption instead of just mindlessly repeating something they 'read somewhere' because it suits their argument.

One FACT i can tell you about the LG range is that they have a light-sensor and the ability to turn on 'Intelligent power mode' which drops the brightness/contrasts etc to what is required for your lighting environment. This function is particularly good at night with the lights off or low, as a very bright picture can be too much late at night. The lower end of this power saving is a measly 55% power consumption.

Thumbs up to LG for this feature!

    • cool feature but in my experience light sensors generally makes the picture look like poo…just keep the tv instandard mode and you'll prbably be ok

      • Do you have a modern LG or is your comment rather whimsical?

My thought would be, by the time my electricity bill usage on plasma gone up to your Ticketed price of LED LCD TV (still selling for 3k to 4k?), I would have bought a new one, and you would be stuck on the expensive old gen TV LOL

  • hare is the link to the gov energy rating site - http://www.energyrating.gov.au/

Energy consumption seems to be reasonable for a tv this size - 556kWh/year with 0.25W/hr standby. On the energy rating website the LG plasma TVs seem to come near the top, with only some non FULL HD Panasonics beating it.

If memory serves me correct they base the energy star rating on 10 hrs of use per day so hourly wattage would be 556000 / (365 * 10) = 152W/hr

I should have said I could only find a few reviews / comments on the TV and they were all positive.

The PQ seemed OK in JB Hifi, but I noticed they were using a 576i source so I suppose it was doing an OK job upscaling. Would have been nice to see how it handles blueray, but since I don't have 1 it wasn't a real issue for me - upscaling performance is probably more important since most of what we watch on our TVs is upscaled in some way - SD TV, DVD, AVI files etc.

  • Got this TV yesterday for $849 on sale from JB so ask for that price if you are buying, it replaces my old 32" full hd LG lcd from 2008 (which is a super reliable unit still with great PQ). Am running in the phosphorus at the moment for 100 hours or so on low contrast and avoiding letterbox and network logos until then. Picture quality is great and motion and colour are very good as well (sport/movie etc settings make a big difference to this.)Am running it on hdmi from a pioneer vsx819 reciever from my sources foxtel hd and ps3. Am very happy with this tv it looks very impressive once you get it home and turn the store settings off and run a proper source. Am not scared of LG televisions so I will keep this updated after the run in period. power consumption is 5 stars, it makes quite a bit of heat though (not hot but a warmth surrounding it lol) but as its a big unit its kind of expected. Razor frame looks very impressive too for the price it looks like a picture frame at times haha.
