Moving from iPhone 8 Optus Plan to New Plan with iPhone XS Max

Hey guys, I am paying $59 per month currently with Optus. With that I get an iPhone 8 and 20GB of data (this is enough for me.) I also get free Optus Sport.

I see the equivalent plan with Optus on the non-lease plans is $124 per month ($65 plan + $59 phone) for 20GB data.

This seems ridiculously expensive.

My plan expires in a few months and they've offered to waive my remaining fees if I sign up to a new contract.

Seems like I'm best to buy a phone outright and jump onto a SIM only plan.

Has anyone else made a similar move recently? Would love to hear what you went with.

Thanks!

~$1700 phone, and you wonder why it would be expensive over 24 months? That's $71/month just to repay the phone

  • Xs Max ~$1800 + 17GB data/mth $340

    That's equivalent to $92/month for 24 months.

The phone is just very expensive so it just sounds pricey.

Retails for $1799 so /24 is about 75 a month

    You’re getting it for 24*59 is $1416

Personally I’d wait for the next gen. It’s only another couple of months

  • I recently changed from an S8 to S10 with Optus. They offered the same deal before my contract expired, but I held out until after it did expire and then through chat I got them to give me 25% off plan fees (not the phone repayments).

It would be silly now to sign a new contract with the Xs Max. New phones should be released in September/October.

  • Buy the phone outright and get a Kogan sim. It's cheaper.

  • Yikes. That's the reason why I moved away from iPhone. I'm now on $69/pm with a Huawei Mate 20 Pro. Better phone than the XS Max in many ways. Resale value probably crap, but at least I saved money upfront.

I would contract with Jeenee who use the Optus network and keep the iPhone 8. For the first 6 months you pay $24.5 and the $29.5 for a 12 month 30g plan.

At some point Apple will release a 5G iPhone. You may not necessarily want to get the first iteration but it’s good to maintain flexibility just in case you want. The carriers are not subsidising handsets to the same degree presently however they may want to encourage people to 5G by doing so again.

  • I was with optus on 7+ PLAN paying $125/m. Contract expired and went to JB HIfi last week for $65/m sim only plan with $500 GC, Bought iphone Xs Max 256GB for $1849 (price matched- their price was $2049) + $200 device insurance for 12 months, paid with JB Hifi GC bought from Woolies for 5% off( friend works for woolies) including $500 JB hifi GC from the above deal. Got Home had a chat with telstra to get their $10 off new contract and $10 off Port in (or Whatever it was called), they cancelled the plan from JB hifi and put me on $69/m with $20 discount.

TDLR: All up $2059 for 12 months including device insurance.
    Plan: $49*12= 588
    Phone: $1849-$500= $1349-5%= $1281.55
    Insurance: $200-5%=$190

    • Looking to do this too. Hopefully the deal comes back

  • Kogan $14.90 total for 3 months and 20GB data per month. Port out after that to another prepaid plan..rinse and repeat. It works out to be next to nothing! Use your existing phone for 12 months or so and really work out if having a new phone is really “that great.” If so, you should have a large amount set aside to buy that phone.
The physcology is to make to think you “need” that new device. When in reality it’s not the case. I work in educating people about technology and trust me, there’s far better things to spend you money on in life.
    I hope this helps!
