Can we use jb gift card to bring down the price to $23.33 a month?

    • +32

Try see if Telstra will allow you to pay your bills with JB Giftcards…probably the same answer to your question

      • Thats how he interprets his post can I be sorry for my innocence?

    • Dunno why I was negged for just asking a question?

      • +21

Guessing some people feel it was a rhetorical question. Generally, $500 JB Hi Fi gift card isn't really worth $500.

        • Im sorry if some people do feel rude about my question.

      • +1

        plused, was an honest question

      • +10

I learned a long time ago, there’s no such thing as a silly question. If you’re wondering something, dollars to donuts says someone, somewhere is very likely wondering the exact same thing, which is a reflection that you’re not silly, or that it’s inappropriate to ask the question.

Of course other people will be wanting to know how they could possibly reduce the cost of their phone plan, and considering the obscure nature of the recent deals made with Telstra, I.E; contacting chat to enquire whether it’s possible to reduce the phone plan by $10 a month etc, it’s only logical to assume that there may be other methods of reducing costs that may not initially appear obvious or readily apparent.

      • I think you can not pay Telstra with JB gift card.
Imagine you can not pay Coles groceries with Woolworth Gift Card

        • Think he means cAn you buy a Visa gift card and use that

    • +4

Nope Telstra will bill you $65 each month but you can use it to buy stuff at JB

      1. 65*12 = 780
      2. 780-500 = 280
      3. 280/12 = 23.33 (effectively)
        • +9

A question you already knew the answer to

          • -3

@Broomstick: Just let it go bro. I thought that if we get plan from JB with telstra we are tied at JB not directly at telstra. Like what we have foxtel from telstra. We were paying foxtel at telstra.

            • +3

@jbar21: I've seen the question enough to know it can't be used against your bill, BUT, I still think it's a valid question/comment.

The use of neg votes around here are pretty questionable at the best of times.

You can buy/sign up for the plan in JB, why shouldn't you be allowed to use the credit to pay for the same service!?

      • +2

$500 JB Hifi Gift card ≠ $500 AUD
I know which one I'd rather have.

        • I got one and it takes a while to find something to make it worth its value.

Find something low margin like Apple stuff and TRS it, you feel better than selling it $450 to someone.

        • Thats fair, but a $780 phone bill with nothing, or a $780 phone bill with a $500 jb hifi gift card (or $450 cash with very little trouble)?

          I know which I'd prefer.

    • +1

jbar21, you might be new. You can sell your gift card in the "Classifieds" forums. Usually it has to be at a slight loss.

      • -1

Yes bro thats why I asked that. didnt thought of selling it online. but Thanks for letting me know.

    • Well you could sell the gift card on feeBay and probably get $420 - $450 for it. Less fees might come out with $400 in your skyrocket. You could then put that onto your account. Effectively brings it down to $31.66 a month.

    • No you can't pay Telstra with JB HiFi gift cards.

  • -2

So one guy at one store is giving the offer that expired last week?

    • +1

It is across all JB hi-fi as per that guy. I can't vouch and that is why mentioned to check with store.

If offer is not available at other strores , one can call to NS store and see if they can process over the phone.

      • +1

Just checked, and it is available at Broadway (Syd) too

  • +1

It's good that a mod changed the link/picture from Telstra to JB Hi Fi. It was giving people the wrong impression (showing people Telstra's Samsung Galaxy 10 5G plans).
If you do get this deal (note: this is a BYO plan), remember to cancel it once the contract finishes.

  • +3

Do I need to port-in to get this deal as per all other JB HIFI contracts?

OR is this available for existing Telstra customers?

    • +1

I'd like to know too. Typically existing customers get jack sh*t

      • +3

        1: call store and confirm
2: if #1 is not positive, do Port out - Port in.
3: if #2 does not feasible, don't worry, deals will keep coming😄

        • +1

I’m sure I read on a similar deal recently that there was a 30 day requirement to not be on Telstra to do this - so people couldn’t port out and port back in.

Sucks, existing customers never get rewarded.

          • +1

@sarahbrisbane: Correct about the 30 days

            • @87percent: Sorry but your wrong. I ported out and back in over 2 days with no issue.

          • @sarahbrisbane: I had just ported out before all the deals started (maybe 1 week prior) went to 3 stores in total and managed to port over at broadway jb hifi. The thing i found with the other two stores was that jbhifi staff would call someone? Telstra/headoffice who knows and they would advise i hadn’t been out for 30 days. In broadway the guy didnt call anyone just started to the registration on the computer -no questions or checks done.

            Hope that helps

            • @Trebenista: We're u still in contract to Telstra?

              • @Richsta: I had left telstra to go to vodafone a week prior when the original $65 deal started with the $500gc i was planning on rejoining after a month to sign up to the $45 deal that offered the $200 gift card but noticed comments on here that people were porting out/in all in one day so thought i would try my luck

          • @sarahbrisbane: The lady I spoke to at Garden City JB said that it isn't important at all. You may have a different experience, though. I ultimately did not want to try the port out/in gauntlet in case it didn't work.

            • @ThithLord: Do you know if Garden City has this offer today? I tried calling them and ended up having to leave a message

              • @Quaker: Nope, sorry mate. And I can't guarantee they'll accept a port out/in that's a day old - it's just what the woman said to me. She wasn't a 100% sure, but she was also a little bit.

  • Also extending the $45 per month deal?

  • would i need to offset the value of the JB gift card when claiming partial work use deduction of the phone plan in my tax return? hmm

    • +2

LOL no unless you really want to :)

Just to be clear - you will get a monthly payment slip from Telstra for $65/month and there is no mention of a gift card anywhere.

Also, someone told me that if you really want to be a pro, you can buy something with the gift card (like a phone for work). Claim TRS and then also claim the tax deduction when you file with the ATO come tax time.

If you do the maths properly, you may end up with more money than you spent :)

    • +2

If you asked ATO for official answer: Yes, of course
      OZB answer: No

P.S. we are not responsible for your actions. ;) . Though, do you really need 60GB per month?

    • +1

I think you should be ok, but it might depend on how you are calculating your deductions. From memory there's a few ways one can work out the value and some or most of them don't take any consideration into the actual inclusions in your plan including onboarding offers. One method is determining what percentage of calls are work vs personal by sampling a one month period. That method doesn't talk about data allowances, inclusions of services like Spotify/Apple Music etc that have no work function etc etc. If you dont make a lot of personal calls then this method might work out well.

  • +1

"I can confirm this is valid at North Sydney store"
Phew.. my wife just went for the same deal with $300 in Melbourne this morning lol

    • +4

To be honest, if you call them , they will match $500. You may get missed $200. Try..

    • Can you tell me what store in Melbourne? Who know what store around Glenwaverley Melbourne can do this deal? Thank you

  • +1

Wish one of these deals had come up when Samsung s10+ was released.

  • Would make sense, but you’ll probably buy things that you weren’t going to buy anyway from JB and wouldn’t be saving any money

    • You can always gift or donate to get sense of satisfaction of full dollar value. Or sell at discount to realise actual money and rely on dollar fluctuations :)

    • +1

Going rate on OzB classifieds is 10% off for JB Gift Cards (so your $500 would be worth $450 cash)

  • +2

Also some conjecture that Telstra will be changing their pricing tomorrow and BYO plans will no longer be available. Any potential plan changes would have to be organised today or you could be stuck with only the JB plans to choose from.

  • +1

Friend phoned the Warrawong store earlier and confirmed this deal is valid but for today only.

Thanks OP, the friend in question had issues with JB Hifi not honouring the Note 8 deal for $0 upfront when joining this plan yesterday, even though they had a sign advertising it outside the store. So he's happy to be getting this as he was looking to swap over from Optus.

  • Good find OP

  • +2

May be a coincidence but JB Hi-Fi has a deal currently which sounds pretty much like the one OP described except that you have to buy a $999+ phone to get the $500 phone credit voucher. Also note that it calls it phone credit, so I assume it is only for phones, not say, a TV.
    Check it out here

    The conditions mentioned are
*Available to port-in customers and new Telstra customers only. Excludes Telstra Pre-Paid, Boost and Belong customers. Minimum cost $1560. Offer not in conjunction with any other offer. For terms & conditions visit www.jbhifi.com.au/telstra-terms. Phone credit can only be used in store and is received when you connect to the $65 JB plan over 24 months. To receive the $500 phone credit the handset purchase price must be a minimum value of $999. Phone credit can’t be used on any other items in store. handset must be purchased the same day the connection is made. Please refer to store staff for further enquiries.

Still may be a good deal, but unless this is a big concidence I feel that the sales guy was a bit confused and you can't get the $500 without buying a phone too. Personally it isn't clear to me if that is $999 after discount or if you can even use the phone credit on the phone you are buying to get the credit or it needs to be a second phone…

    • probably not a coincidence…

    • +1

This wasn't advertised online either (the gift card side of the promo anyways), but it was legit (I can testify to that as I was one of those who switched over and got the $500 gift card). It's a 12 month plan only. I'm assuming they have managed to bring it back (for one day only).

  • Is this a different deal to what’s advertised in the link below?

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/mobile/

    $65pm with 80gb data
$500 gift card with handset purchase over $999
$300 gift card with handset purchase under $999

OP’s deal is $65pm with 60gb data, $500 gift card and no handset purchase required - is that correct?

    • Yes it's a different deal, similar to this post.

      • +1

Ok, not advertised anywhere on JB website so I guess I’ll just reference this page.

        • +1

No luck, sales rep said this deal no longer valid from last Wednesday. Apparently this post on ozbargain is fake. Lol.

Edit: all good now, I received deal.

          • @akbermo:

Edit: all good now, I received deal.

Just curious, did you go to another JB Hifi, or the rep initially was ill informed but was soon corrected?

Happy to learn you scored the deal in the end mate.

            • +1

              @The J man: Latter.

Dude said no expired, told him about the post but he wouldn’t budge, spoke to a colleague and was told that’s it’s been extended until today.

    • The biggest difference is length of the contract, your link is 24 months plan and this one is 12 months plan.

    • I am pretty much sure that it's 24 months contract.

Deal I posted I a BYD ( thus not required to purchase a phone).

  • +2

FYI - Telstra releasing new plans tomorrow
Slightly cheaper than this & No contract
Gift voucher on this offer still makes it a better offer though

    • +1

$23.33 for Telstra network ( best network in southern hemisphere :) ) with 60 GB data.. Telstra plan won't be cheaper then this till next financial year.

Even Telstra store won't give this deal today what JB is offering

      • Yes these JB deals are crazy. The staff mentioned to me that for the last couple of months, these deals between JB and Telstra was the main cause Optus' profit decreased.

Whoever managed to secure the partnership in JB need to be given big incentives

    • Just curious how do you know that Telstra will be releasing new plan tomorrow?

    • Look at new Telstra plan now, I hope no one wait till today to change to Telstra.

  • -1

    no overseas call :(

    • If you don't mind, what is your budget and requirement. Also if deal is good , are you ready to move?

      • -2

        need overseas call !!

  • Just called and confirmed - the 30 day port in requirement stands and is checked by this store.

If you've just ported out, you may want to look elsewhere.

  • +16

    I always love this maths:
"JB hi-fi gift card bringing cost to $280"
No, the cost is still $780. You're just getting $500 to spend on something else, you're not getting $500 "back" to bring the price down to $280.

Don't get me wrong, still a great deal, but calling the cost $280 is dodgy salesman tactics.

    • Exactly this!

      • You can always gift or donate to get sense of satisfaction of full dollar value. Or sell at discount to realise actual money and rely on dollar fluctuations :)

Value of services ( such as data , network) or products ( for example phone device) is depend and vary from person to person.

As refer comments where someone mentioned on deductions and TRS.

    • +1

And no on pays face value for a gift card. Ever.

      • +1

It's funny cos in reality the vast majority of gift card sales is at face value.

    • Totally agree

    • Unless you were about to buy something from JBHifi anyway. Like I was for the 43inch TV I needed for a monitor. So in that way it has worked out to effectively paying for the TV in installments. Plus getting a free 60GB phone plan. For me that works out $280 cheaper a year for a phone plan and also pretty good maths!!

  • Can we add International Dialing and Roaming to this plan, same as offered by Telstra $79 BYO plan?

  • +1

Solid deal. I wish they brought back the $199 deal for the S10e

  • Can you then "upgrade" to the $49 60GB plan here like was available a few weeks ago?

It's the $69 plan but with $20 credit.

Guessing the upgrade might not be available still, but still worth a try on live chat :)

    • I'd like to know the same.

    • +1

Only if you get a very friendly or completely clueless Telstra person to chat to.

    • I am with Optus right now, and looking to avail this offer, so just had a chat with Telstra guy. He wasn't sure if it can be upgraded until I subscribe this JB hifi offer and tell him my number. Also this $69 offer with $20 credit is ending today :( and its an online only offer.

    • Its safe to say that you could change to $59 60gb plan, but not on the $49 60gb plan unless you are very lucky. Its because Telstra already aware that lots of people change their JB plan to $49 one, so they take away the port in discount.

      • Even without port-in discount, still it makes sense if you are after unlimited international calls and peace of mind data. However, my question is whether it can be upgraded or not? As I am after Telstra $89 plan as I am after unlimited international calls and roaming.

        • I don't think it has unlimited international calls and peace of mind data (I asked @ the jb hifi) please correct me if this is not the case

          • @andy8: This plan doesn't have international calls and peace of mind data. Thats why I am asking if I subscribe to this offer, can I later add-on these through Telstra chat?

            • +1

@usmanhafeez2000: Can confirm I have switched from jbhifi plan to the $49 plan by speaking to the lovely people at Telstra tech support, try to do live chat after porting and see how you go. I went with the straight answers explaining what I did and why I want to switch, the lady was more than happy to help at Telstra. Definitely the best customer service of all the big telcos

        • You definitely can go for $69 for 90gb plan

    • I went to 2 JB Hifis and a Telstra store before declaring them all idiots.

1st JB sent me to telstra.
Telstra said it’s a JB thing and has nothing to do with them.
2nd JB said you can downgrade, after a reasonable period … like 6 months
