Cutting down Costs on Lotions and Skin Care Products for Baby

Hi, I am interested to hear tips/strategies to look after babies skin. Can people recommend products that are gentle on babies skin as well as being gentle on the wallet. Is it possible to make your own skin care products for baby? Does buying in bulk work?

Can anyone recommend products in any stores? Ebay, Amazon and Aldi come to mind.

  • Also to carry back with all the useful fellow ozbargainer's comments make sure you apply the patch test before smothering your child as you would with sunscreen to see if any allergic reactions might occur. Can't comment on each product but each company uses different "fillers" that some people are more sensitive to

  • Marcalan branded (found in big w) nipple cream is around half the price of the lansinoh nipple cream.

There is a slight texture difference.

The only other cream I have used it bepanthen, 12 buck tube will probably last 5 years with modern nappies.

  • We were recommended organic coconut oil as nappy cream. A 300g jar lasts months and is just magical. Bought a second bottle after 6 months just because we misplaced the first bottle.

    Also use Aveeno baby lotion.

In the end every baby is different and you have to find the most suitable product yourself.

  • This is what worked for us, 3 kids now over 10.

    1. Don't bath your new baby for at least the first 2 weeks. They don't need chemicals irritating their perfect skin.
    2. Use a drop of olive oil and water in the bath, nothing else, and nothing after.
    3. After a few months start to use gentle soaps. We used Dermeze soap free wash. https://www.dermeze.com.au/kids-dry-skin/
    4. For cradle cap we used Dermeze baby oil type stuff in the pot.
    5. For nappy rash we used Bepanthen. https://www.bepanthen.com.au/en/learn-about-skin/your-babys-…

Our 1st had very bad cradle cap. We didn't put anything on it and it was pretty bad. For the others we used Dermeze to great effect.
Our 2nd has really sensitive skin, even now at 12yo. The above helped keep rashes to a minimum.

I have seen other parents having a nightmare with creams and lotions and soaps and causing all kinds of weird outcomes. Keep it as simple as you can.

Our baby has mild eczema. We steer clear away from qv and cetaphil as they have sulphate laureate which is thought to thin the skin. Instead we use Kenkay in the bath, which as friendly ingredients. You can get it at Priceline.
Also for wipes check out this website. http://mynontoxictribe.com.au. A lot of wipes including curash have nasty ingredients that I’d never risk putting on bubs’ skin.

  • Dermaveen products are great and pretty cheap, failing that QV is fine too. Sudocream good as a barrier cream but test a little bit first, my first kid reacted terribly to it. Marcalan used pre-breastfeeding as well as post will save a lot of pain and suffering (babies can ingest it) and it makes a really good eczema ointment for babies too. You'll be given a bag of samples at some point during the pregnancy too, ask at the hospital. All trial and error really. Frankly the cost goes out the window and is replaced with 'whatever works so we can get this settled down and get back to sleep'!

I feel like if you are worried about the price of cream for a baby, you are going to get a very rude shock at all the other costs. As others have said, not necessary most of the time, and it lasts forever. You'll probably spend more one nappies in a week than on cream for 3 years.

  • Sudocrem is a must have in baby bag but of course use it only when there is a nappy rash. If you must use commercial products, we found QV moisturiser, soap is good. Though babies generally don't need any bath products for first few months. Consider using 100% natural products more such as edible coconut oil for massaging or just day-to-day use.
As others have already pointed out, always read product label for expiry date, instructions etc. apply small portion initially and observe how it goes while introducing any new product and best to consult professional for specific advice.
    Good luck and enjoy parenting.
