Remember, the first time you convert it switches all game pass / gold months to Ultimate. To a max of 3 years. So stock up first!

    • That deal is finished now I'm pretty sure

E: looks like I'm wrong, it will finish soon though

Xbox chat said it would be on basically indefinitely.

I bought 3 years of Gold from the Big W sale, my current GP Ultimate expires in February. The chat we had said I would be fine to activate all the Gold I want come Feb 2020 and convert it to GP Ultimate. He did say that the $1 deal will likely be gone though, and I'll have to buy one full price month to do the convert though.

And if they want to take away the deal, I don't just have my screenshots of it, I have a copy I got him to email me on the official Microsoft support email so it's not my word against him, it's his own word against him.

Point is, the conversion deal will either still be on for a good long while, or I got lied to. Both are pretty likely though.

        • "the conversion deal will either still be on for a good long while, or I got lied to"

Option C is they made a mistake or a call that they weren't in a position to make, which I suspect would be the case for support staff when it comes to these sorts of things where long term corporate strategy is at play.

I firmly believe it almost certainly will not continue indefinitely as it's a huge money loss for MS if people can indefinitely renew Games Ultimate at about 1/3 of the cost of the service by cancelling, getting a Gold subscription and then converting back to Ultimate. Assuming they want to keep Gold and Game Pass as seperate options (which makes sense for a lower cost service for people that don't want everything), then I imagine at some point rather than getting 1:1 time they'll likely handle conversions to Ultimate from Gold or Game Pass using the same pro-rata rate that they use if you apply a pre-paid card for Gold or Game Pass to an existing subscription. Just doesn't make business sense for them to allow it indefinitely, or if they do they probably should or would look to ensure users can only do the conversion once per account.

Just seems to be asking for abuse and companies don't like leaving money on the table. As a once off to lock people into the ecosystem makes sense, especially with Scarlett out next year, but indefinitely devalues the service.

If anything the $1 deal is the likely one to survive, or be renewed frequently, based on Live's history of offering such promos as essential introductory offers over the years.

@Smigit: You can only do a conversion once, so you can't cancel and and then upgrade gold again to Ultimate.

            • @NoApostrophePlurals: Others have reported they have cancelled, added 12 months of Xbox Gold Live, then upgraded to XGP Ultimate. Cancelling does forfeit any remaining months of your subscription.

          • @Smigit: You're not wrong, but supposedly Xbox is raring to get rid of Gold on it's own come next gen, that's the only reason I have a bit of hope that the guy wasn't completely full of shit.

Say that they stop selling vouchers for Gold on it's own in the near distant future, sure there's a shitload of them still out there, but eventually they will all get gone, they'd probably know that going into this, and if they were to keep the value around until such a time that Gold can no longer be bought on it's own, it would be a much better PR move to say "hey we're taking this shit away but if you have it, you get a free upgrade to the new thing" rather than simply "hey, (profanity) you, pay more".

            • @TheDukeOfNukem: My only concern is that Gamepass Ultimate will get more expensive in time. If it happens, I think it will also drive up the price of existing Live subscriptions left in the wild.

I'm more curious to see how Gamepass Ultimate is going to shape things such as standard monthly pricing, Games With Gold (if it ceases to exist) and how long they'll continue to permanently give away Xbox 360 games. Or if they're really aggressive about getting everybody move to the service, perhaps set a cut off date where all standard subscriptions are converted.

              • @cheepo: Say a year or so into the Xbox 2's life, my dream for GWG would be one for each gen. There's 40 odd original Xbox games available right now, hopefully with more to come down the line, give us one of them a month. Then give us one of the tonnes of 360 games that are already BC. Then give us one Xbox One game. Then finally, a smaller Xbox 2 game as well. That would make my backward compatible loving ass very happy.

Anyway, more on topic, I'm interested to see the future of it all too. I think Game Pass is tremendous value already but I already have most of the games I care about so I've only bothered using it through the Master Card deal a while back when it was free, through various free month offers, and finally, via upgrading what Gold I had left into Ultimate. Come next gen I am intending to buy as few games as possible and see how long I can live off Game Pass on the nextbox (plus my huge ass backlog), a few others I know are in the same boat too. If Game Pass ends up being super mega popular, I wouldn't be surprised to see it go up in price a year or two into Scarlett's lifecycle. I'd be fine with them getting rid of Gold really at this point, but there's too much money in forcing people to pay for online so I don't see them abandoning the pay to play model there, but obviously, if Gold and Game Pass both cease to be and only Ultimate is available then that's 16 a month, for a lot of people who would only have it for online. I know people can go "well I wait for a sale and get a year of Gold for 40 odd and I don't mind paying for online that price" but I think just shy of 200 a year to the people who only would use it to play online is way too much, I find it hard to believe they would get rid of Gold entirely, at least any time soon, because I just can't imagine they would let people play online for free. Gotta go, ramble later.

                • @TheDukeOfNukem: Nah, it all makes for good discussion. I'm also hoping that we see more original Xbox titles be added to the backwards compatible list and I'm happy to hear that all existing Xbox One games will at least carry over. It's a step in the right direction to have a Steam style infrastructure as it keeps gamers loyal.

I think Gamepass Ultimate is great value if you have taken advantage of the current offer but it's somewhat overkill for certain people (casual gamers, those that are time poor, only play a handful of games online etc.). Especially if it gets more expensive. So fingers crossed a cheaper online only subscription stays in place in some way.

            • @TheDukeOfNukem:

              “hey, (profanity) you, pay more”

Sure, but I don’t think it’s a hostile move to enforce only one 1:1 redemptions per account, irrespective of their being cards in the wild.

    Great price.

  • Anyone else bought multiple of these? First one activated fine for me then the rest said free trial for new customers only…

    • oh really? so this is only for ppl not already on ultimate sub? thanks i was about to buy it but i better avoid

      • I was already on ultimate sub and it let me redeem one.. the rest failed… I’ve messaged there support, maybe I got a bad batch but it would appear the codes they gave me were free trial codes

Edit: just got a response, they’re refunding me the keys that didn’t work… so I gather that yea they’re not stackable and probably won’t work if you’ve already redeemed a game pass ultimate trial of some kind..

        • -1

Those codes are special discounted introduction offers so you can only redeem 1 per year.

    • Same thing happened to me. I'm getting the second key refunded.

  • -1

Does this stack on current xbox game pass?

  • If this is like the codes amazon sells you can only activate these once a year or something like that.

  • -3

I find ultimate is a bit overhyped

    • -1

I think the fact that the regular price is so much and can only be bought monthly. Xbox live gold attracts ~40% discount for buying annually. If they applied similar discount to ultimate for buying annually I think it would be worth it…. also I wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up including xcloud down the track.

not a bad deal but if u dont have ultimate yet u may b better. off stacking a few years of normal gold when it pops up at $50 a year and then converting to ultimate and i think the conversion ratio is about 90% ?

If you haven't got Xbox Insider Hub, get it and try to reach level 5 so you get the preview delta (or better). That way, you can get 3 months of GamePass Ultimate for $1. You will need to go through Support and check. I had to ask Support to do the actual purchase (for some reason, Web site only shows 1 month, but Support confirmed 3 months also $1 for me).

    • Does this stack up if I already have 3 months gold live and 3 months xbox game pass? So I would have 9 months of ultimate if I get the deal?

  • Anyone got good deals on xbox live gold 12months?

  • Bought 2x 12-month Live Gold cards for $64 each from Big W and was only able to redeem one because of the maximum of 36 months. I read the expiry date of my membership incorrectly and though I was able to add another 2 years to it. The date format is MM/DD/YYYY and I thought it was DD/MM/YYYY.
