Egg Prices Rising So Quickly

Not too long ago I was buying eggs after an already price increase at $2.80. Then those disappeared and had to buy $3 a dozen and now finally both Coles and Woolies lowest price is $3.85. If it gets any worse they’ll be more expensive than some meats

      8/10 solid pun.

    • +9

      Your puns crack me up.

    • +5

      Lol.. That's eggcellent!

    • +12

You'll just have to shell out that little more now.

    • +7

This is a serious issue, not the time to be cracking yolks

    • +5

Damn it, you poached my pun!

    • -5

Try not to over egg it

    • +4

If anyone asks, albumin my room.

  • +10

There was a big outbreak which caused alot of eggs to be destroyed, since supply had dropped and demand has stayed the same = price increases.

    • +49

Was that the infamous Humpty Dumpty incident?

      • +42

What does Peter Dutton have to do with this?

      • Chicken Run

      • Fun fact. Humpty Dumpty was most likely a cannon, not an egg.

    • +3

      Great eggsplanation

    • +1

Woah woah woah.. slow down, professor.

  • +36

Yep, the price war will not be over easy

    • +1

      9/10 great execution.

      • +22

        *eggsecution

      • +2

        Ah you're a good egg aren't you

      • +1

        Well done!

  • +18

They are trying to stop EggBoy.

    • +12

He should have known that Whites Only is no yolk.

      • +1

        7/10, topical and good execution.

        • +2

You shove your beak in and give me a poultry 7?

    • +1

Lol you watch Tom Gleeson? :)

  • -5

You cracked the shell on this one

    • +23

3/10 i don't feel like you even tried.

  • Time to grow some chickens

    • +1

      Think I'll take two chickens.

      • +4

I understand that if any more words come pouring out your crack mouth, I'm gonna have to eat every feathering chicken in this room.

  • -1

When consumers reduce consumption due to the prices rises, lots of people will have egg on their face and prices will decline

    • +5

2/10 set up was contrived and I feel it's very cliche. You could have done a lot better.

      • +6

        Stop egging me on

  • +14

    An egg related pun.

    • +19

      404/10, pun not found.

    • +1

      eggcellent

  • +1

Drive down to the country side, have exact change ready. Plenty of places leave free range eggs out at $5/dozen.

The ones near me are so free range I have to make sure I don't drive over them.

    • +38

The OP is complaining about paying $3.85 per dozen and you suggest $5 plus travel costs? An egg-related pun would've been more useful.

      • +1

I didn't want to egg on the puns.

        • +3

I think we shell leave it at that.

          • +6

            @kahn: Yolkay

  • -3

I don't know if you city folk can get Conobolos eggs where you are. They are from a place around near Orange NSW and are currently in my Woolworths $4.69 for 15 eggs. They are decent eggs, not like the cheapest supermarket eggs that crack and spew the white stuff as soon as they get put in boiling water.

    • +3

Microsoft eggs would be Contoso eggs

    • +2

That's what happens when you put cool eggs straight into boiling water, You're supposed to bring the water to boil with the eggs in it.

      • -3

Not when you want to do 3 minute runny eggs with soldiers- they need to go into boiling water and timed 3 minutes from when the water comes up to the boil again. I always put the eggs on the window sill in the sun to warm up before they go in the boiling water. The cheap ones always crack- Conobolos eggs don’t.

      • Actually I find simply leaving the eggs in warm water while I am bringing the water to the boil is better. eggs don't crack as temp difference a lot smaller and timing the perfect soft-boiled egg is simple.

        • -2

          Three points
          1. The cheapest eggs taste shyte
          2. Conobolos eggs don’t crack or have thin shells like the shyte ones
          3. I got my system down pat

          But thanks all the same

          • @Of Aquitaine: any egg will potentially crack when going from very cold to very hot. The eggs I use are all farm fresh. when an item is very cold and immediately immersed in something very hot the rapid expansion can cause the shell to crack, a thicker shell is not a guaranteed protection from that.

          • +2

@Of Aquitaine: Point 1 is nonsense. I've had all sorts of eggs cheapest, dearest, farmyard, home hens… they all taste the same.

Point 2 - yeah, right. Conobolos must plug chicken vaginas with corks to hold the eggs in longer until the shell thickens.

  • Complaining on ozb dozen change anytHEN.

    • +4

4/10 but I appreciate the commitment.

      • +7

I thought it was at least 6/12

        • +4

There it is, 8/10. I knew I saw potential.

  • +8

    God these puns are fowl

    • 5/10, spackers I feel you could have spread your wings here but went the easy route.

      • +4

Sorry, I was gonna go overboard but I was a bit too chicken

  • +2

They're more eggspensive now because a rooster broke into the chicken run, and all the eggs have turned fowl. They have to recooperate the loss somehow.

    Edit: Damnit Spackbace :/

  • +6

If you think egg prices are rising fast, you should see how the self-raising flour is going!

    • +1

Was just doing my grocery shopping and noticed WW home brand muesli was $2.60 now $3, WW home brand rolled oats $1.20 now $1.60.
Those are just a few things I can remember of the top of my head, but yeah prices are going up :(.

      • +4

Pretty sure that was a joke (about the flour), but the oats is explainable: the supermarkets put the squeeze on Uncle Toby's and they responded by lowering quality. So now the "top brand" is cheaper and lower quality, home brand isn't as much of a step down so the price went up.

        • +1

Ooh right I get the joke now lol. Ah that explains the price rise. Thanks ssquid :).

        • Not really. There has been a squeeze in global supply of oats due to declines in US production, because of more cropland being set aside there for corn and soybeans.

Pretty much all of the oats you see in the supermarket aisles are Australian grown and processed. I would defy anyone to be able to reliably tell the difference between any given brand.

          • @cannedhams: Before the dispute when they were taken off the shelves, Uncle Toby's never went on special (I've been buying them for years). Now they regularly appear in the weekly catalogues with 20-30% off and taste like there's bits of cardboard mixed in.

            • @ssquid: Having enjoyed a bowl of them this morning, I don't get that at all.

  • +1

I bought eggstra before the price rise.

    • +1

2/10. Technically qualifies but it's lazy. Damn it, Chris.

      • +4

        My heart is scrambled :-(

        • My heart is scrambled :-(

          And Colesworth is to blame…

  • +15

So many egg puns. Gonna be hard to beat.

    • +14

You just had to whisk it didn't you

  • +7

If they get more expensive you might have to resort to lay-by.

  • The neighbour of this OP may be able to help you with eggs: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/461995

    Egg Prices Rising So Quickly

    Eggsponentially?

  • +4

More on topic, free range eggs mean hens get to go outside.

Its winter and this affects laying.

Our home chooks have only started laying again after quite a break when the temperature dropped.

Now I am not an egg farmer, only my observations.

Barns were heated so egg production is controlled when produced this way.

    • I think all hens are inside, unless you buy the expensive free range eggs.

In 2017 the government introduced a free range egg standard that fails consumers. The standard allows producers to pack 10,000 hens into a hectare with no mandate for hens to actually spend time outdoors

  • Chill. There are other price increases to worry about. An extra $1 per week is not going to break the bank.

    • +6

Maybe OP has all his eggs in one basket…

  • +1
    • +1

Yeah still $3 at my local in Brisbane too 🤷‍♂️ maybe OP is special ?

      • +2

        Or eggsaggerating 🤷‍♂️

  • +8

You want eggs? Time to grow some eggplants

  • If only we had a mathematical egguation to help the eggonomy

  • +1

The price of quick/rolled oats has been increased too.

    • You noticed it too huh?
      ssquid explains it here

      • +1

For NSW, oats increased from $1.1 to $1.4 for 750g in Woolies, from $1.3 to $1.65 for 900g in Coles. Aldi has not taken increase action yet.

  • Fraser Anning loves the price increase

  • Actually, you can expect the price of many animal products to increase. For my own 10 chooks the price of a bag of feed has gone from $12.50 to $18.95 in the last 12 months. Crops have failed or not been planted.
    It's called a major drought.
Many farmers have destocked significantly. The national herd of breeding cows is the lowest its been for decades.
When the drought does break, and let's hope that's soon, the price of meat will probably rise significantly. Farmers will want to keep stock in order to rebuild their herds. With no cattle for sale, the law of supply and demand will kick in.

    • Same. I can't find much quality feed under $25/20kg bag, even at the produce agencies. My girls will gobble that up in under a week.

  • +15

Are you really complaining about 28 cents per egg?

    That's peanuts.

Why they even sell caged eggs is beyond me. Free range is the way to go.

Spend the $5 and get a better quality egg and have peace of mind knowing the chicken lived a better life.

    • +1

      better quality egg

      Huh?

      • +1

Shhh you naughty boy… Next thing you'll be spreading that lie about Santa isn't real. ;-p
