Egg Prices Rising So Quickly

Not too long ago I was buying eggs after an already price increase at $2.80. Then those disappeared and had to buy $3 a dozen and now finally both Coles and Woolies lowest price is $3.85. If it gets any worse they’ll be more expensive than some meats

    • But the free range egg in supermarket mostly are 10,000 hence per hectare which is the maximum for free range, and free range egg in smaller grocery store are about 150-1000 hen per hectare which selling at $8-11 for a dozen

Have you actually seen the difference between "free range" and "caged"? It's not that much different…

      • +3

Keep telling yourself that to ease your conscience. There is enough of a difference to matter to most good people.

        • Yeah, cause the type of eggs people eat determines if they're 'good' or 'bad' - not flippant judgemental attitudes when people don't follow your personal preferences. :-D

      • Good free range eggs (there "not so good" free range) are noticeably better for baking, souffle, meringues poached eggs and other forms of cooking. The shell is thicker, the yolk is a stronger colour and is less likely to break, the whites whip up stiffer and quicker and the egg holds together better.

nice sarcasm but you clearly fail to see the bigger picture.

  • +3

But a price rise of $1.05 is just poultry

  • +2

Look like chicken join fair work pay union they on strike demanding high pay rate and penalty rate for laying eggs.

  • Serious question here.. What came first, the Chicken or the Egg?

I know right. What kind of degnerate buys caged eggs in this day and age?

      • +4

        • Ozbargain=Cheap eggs

          "otherwise eggs ain't eggs." Capiche

Always surprises me. But it's the same degenerates that don't want to fork out the extra dollar for an animal's wellbeing and believe freerange is all a marketing ploy.

        • you understand that egg producers can be fined for not having adequate space to be classed as free range, and often the fine is cheaper to pay and keep charging for 'free range' eggs

        • I guess the negs are from people that love caged eggs but each to their own

  • Eggs are cheap anyway.

We buy the best local eggs we can find (750 birds per hectare), and they cost about $7 a dozen.

  • +2

Invest and buy a hen, it will give you free eggs, might give you golden egg some day.

    • +2

You still need to feed it lol. Also they might contract bird flu.

    • We had a couple of ISA Browns. A lot of their food was free from the local greengrocer but we still had to buy scratch mix. I have no idea what the cost of eggs was but they laid premium eggs 300-330 days a year at their peak. A fox got both of them :-(

$3.85 for free range eggs is a bargain! Unless you're still supporting caged eggs..

  • -1

Lol Scott Morrison probably ordered it. Oh well, I'll throw $1 maccas large fries his way. Will make a better meme.

  • +1

$3 a dozen?? Were they cagged eggs??

    • -1

Of course as after I got negged for stating that people are still buying caged eggs

  • Coming back from woolies, the eggs are almost gone. Only some free range are still available.

    • I bet the price is in negotiation as Coles jacked up the price of caged eggs.

    • Increased to $3.35 in Woolies today.

  • Breggxit

  • Just like roof top solar, people who can should keep a few chickens. That will send the prices down!

But our embrace of free-range is mistaking what humans want for what chickens want, says Victoria’s retiring chief vet.

There is plenty of evidence, he says, that indicates chickens do not like being in an open paddock at all.

In fact, they may be most comfortable inside.

"Chickens are related to forest-dwelling birds. They don't like open spaces," says Dr Charles Milne, who on Friday retired as Victoria’s chief vet. "Free-range can deliver huge welfare problems.

    • I read that as well and it did give me pause for thought. BUT it really is like looking at dogs 300 years ago and saying they would hate living in suburban houses with humans as they need to hunt and roam. Chickens have been domesiticated and changed a great deal, so have our canine friends.

  • That's egregious! I had no idea.

If it gets any worse they’ll be more expensive than some meats

LOL, I'd like to know what meat the OP is buying for about $4/kg. At WW homebrand sausages filled with cereal maybe? Apart from that, whole chickens must be the cheapest at $5/kg ($3.99 at Aldi). The cheapest form of breast fillet (not from the deli) is $9/kg. Thigh fillet I don't even look anymore but the last time I did it was $14/kg! Get these from the deli section instead and they're a couple of $/kg more. The cheapest lamb forequarter chops are something like $14-16/kg. The cheapest pork (shoulder roast made to look presentable with elastic which you have to cut yourself into unappealing hacked-up chops) is $8.50/kg lately but that's not the typical price. You can forget fish entirely - none of it is even remotely close to sensible prices. Squid tubes may be the closest, which was $8 a bag months and months ago but is now $11.

    And Coles is worse.

And the BBQ chickens they both loudly and frequently promoted as cheap (which even I somehow heard the ads, though I don't watch TV) have jumped to $10 (minimum) AND appear to have decreased to the size of anorexic pigeons).
