NSW Facial Recognition Instead of Opal Card for Public Transport

It was in news today https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2019/jul/11/nsw-s…

No more shuffling for cards and there's some savings for frequent users. Looks like a good deal.

Would you take it up?

Can we also have social credit points like China ?

  • +1

What if you got plastic surgery though?

I wouldn’t be taking this up, unlike digital driver licences (starts next month; yessssss)

  • +1

Not a good deal privacy wise.

Though it would be good not to have idiots start fumbling through their wallets when they're about to go through the barriers.

    • +2

They'd have to set the cameras into the floor shooting up for all the morons walking around looking at their phone. Seriously, how hard is it to not look at your phone when walking from Point A to Point B.

  • +7

Expensive technology solution in search of a problem.
Why would the government pay for this? They can already get all the benefit of removing barriers by just removing the barriers like at nearly every smaller station.
    What is the real motivation?

    • +1

I suspect the real motivation is to get us used to the solution. Over time and with enough mentions people will slowly transition from absolute disgust to non-nonchalant inevitability. The solution will then be rolled out across an increasing number of government and private places.

And bang! Another successful erosion of privacy.

Is facial recognition really that accurate across very large pool of millions of people?

Facebook mixes up my wife with her sister, it would be a pain in the ass if my sister in law had to ring up for a refund every time my wife went on the train.

    • No it's not, just like your phone.

What would you do if the system confuses you for someone else? You can't have an account because it will get confused every single time.

      How about getting old?

      • My phone doesn't do facial recognition. Facebook do it in the cloud using their massive server farms and have many employees working on their AI based facial recognition.

        • If you have Android, it can (see unlock features). This has been implemented years ago.

          New iphones, as well.

    • Yes, if you spend the money. Which they won't

    • Is the wife and her sister twins?🤔

      • no. 7 years apart.

        • How unflattering for one of them :p My wife and her sister get asked if they're twins all the time. The mrs is older by 5 years, taller by a good head and has an almost-dimple which her sister doesn't have… and still people ask if they are twins🤷‍♂️

Why not just insert chip on our arms, for ID, bank, mobile phone etc

  • +1

So every time Brad Pitt jumps on a sydney train I get to pay the fare… Nup..!!

  • +1

Maybe the NSW govnt can think of better ways to improve our lives than spending tens of millions to save a few seconds. Maybe like hiring building inspectors to properly certify apartments so people don’t have to work 30 years to pay off a mortgage on a worthless asset.

  • better spent the money on NFC opal card… much practical, or Applepay express… i won't give my bio-data to the givt..

  • +2

They should focus more on improving the train service to reduce delays , interruptions, signal failures that happens every other day instead of wasting my on this. 😒
