        I know right
finally took the plunge on 7 wonders, after waiting a while!

on the lookout for family friendly games

Walmart has ticket to ride @$19 USD
hoping that prime will join the party

i bought agricola today. tempted to get 7 wonders but still deliberating.

Agricola is a worker placement game that requires a significant degree of planning, and I think it's too complex for that age. Your children would quickly be confused and frustrated.

Catan Junior is an excellent game aimed explicitly at that age range (and still quite viable for adults).
For something a little more advanced, I recommend Stone Age (note: NOT Stone Age Junior, which is very different); this is a a bit more advanced than Catan, but my 10 y/o niece loves it. And it reinforces maths skills!
Unfortunately, neither of them are on special… yet.

My kids are 5 and 7 and we enjoy Catan Junior. It's for 2, 3 or 4 players. Catan Family is only for 3 or 4 players so can't play 2 player if that needs to be an option. I'd say it depends how old your kids are. It says Catan Family suitable for 10 and over. I'd imagine a bit earlier than that if they are into board games.

Catan Family is the same as the original version of the classic game, Settlers of Catan.
While the mechanics of the the full game could be understood by children (roll the dice, get the corresponding goods), they are unlikely to understand how to negotiate favourable trading deals, and would struggle with planning to score the points required to win the game. However, it is an excellent introduction for adults into modern board games.

Catan Junior is a simplified version based on the same mechanics, but there are less goods, trading is straightforward and consistent, and point scoring is child friendly.

If your target audience is getting your friends/parents/partner into an excellent board game, I'd recommend Family.
If you want something most children will enjoy, I have no hesitation recommending Junior.

          @docains:
If you already have Catan, unless you want to train the kids "up" to the adult game, I'd go for something different.
Ticket to Ride Junior (either the US or Europe) version is supposed to be very good, and is a completely different style of game (and at least one of them is on special at the moment).
I have My Little Scythe (rated for 8+) lined up to teach my niece next; we haven't played it yet, but I have read the rules and I am confident she'll love it.

          • @ausminstrel: My 3 oldest (16, 14 & 11) already play ticket to ride Europe. My youngest (8) will put the trains out and hand everyone their cards they select from the pile or deck. So I'm thinking that I might go for the Family Edition.

Thanks to you both for your replies. :)

So far I've added Forbidden Desert, Catan Family Edition, Splendor & 7 Wonders to the cart. I want to get Pandemic but I'll wait for a decent price. Some good family Christmas presents.

            • +1

@heal: Forbidden Desert is way better than Pandemic in my opinion. Maybe get it one day, but no need to get both at the same time if you ask me.

    • Agricola might be a bit heavy, at least for the 7 year old..

    • I'd say they're a bit young for Agricola and it's also a bit long to play with the family as when I play a game(with two people) it goes easily for 1-2 hours. However I love playing sushi go and Machi Koro with the family as it's fast paced and simple to understand. Kids seem to like the cute artwork as well.

    • They also have the family edition $45.49

  • thanks guys for your comments on Agricola

Catan Junior is an excellent game aimed explicitly at that age range

we have Catan (normal) which we quite enjoy
would Catan junior be a useful addition?

Probably want to consider that Dead of Winter Crossroads is currently cheaper from Amazon AU @ $45.95 as opposed to the current $61.23 from Amazon US store. Obviously quicker shipping too. Hits this price fairly regularly when Amazon AU brings it in stock.

    • +1

Thank you, I'd just bought it, but was able to cancel and get it for the cheaper price.

      • Glad you saved!

    • my bad. thanks for pointing it out

    • Dead of Winter Crossroads is currently cheaper from Amazon AU @ $45.95

can't seem to find it mate
      is there a link?

      • I think it's sold out, it's not showing now and at some point I remember it saying there were 3 copies left.

        • Oh ok
Just thought I was having a boy look :)

      • Still going for $61.23 on the global store deal of the day, but Amazon AU is out of stock @ $45.95.
I bought it around a month ago, and noticed that Amazon AU usually only stocks a few at a time but looks like it's always at $45.95. Just set a camelcamelcamel price alert <$50, and it should notify you when it's back in stock. Usually back every few days to couple of weeks.

Patchwork is great. It's one of my favourite two player games, along with Azul. It sounds like a boring concept, but it's heaps of fun. Try it out if you're looking for a couples game.

  • Sadly no new discounts today
Was hoping for ticket to ride, esp after Walmart had heavily discounted it yesterday

  • Photosynthesis just for the visual feast!
