~50% off Philips Hue White Smart LED Light Bulbs - B22 $12.90, E27 $13.90 @ Bunnings

170

Lowest prices at Bunnings as far back as Pricehipster goes (mid Feb).

White Classic Smart LED Bulb B22 (Was $26.05) - $12.90

White Classic Smart LED Bulb E27 (Was $26.05) - $13.90

Not sure who Bunnings are matching the prices to.

They are also still matching two of the starter kits that are still on sale at Amazon (deal), one of which consists of the bridge (hub) and two of the E27 bulbs for $99. That's cheaper than separately buying the full price bridge and two of the on-sale bulbs ($104.75).

Pretty sure these won't work with dimmer switches.

    • Not sure why you got a neg for that. Deserves discussion.

Can't say I've tried mind you…I had it in my head that you couldn't use them with (hardwired) dimmers too. Instructions on all the hue bulbs I've had say to just leave the dimmer switch on full if you have them.

Of course…they work fine with the Hue dimmer switch.

Good price though. Still…I way prefer the colour ones…go way dimmer, much smoother. Now if we could get those for under $15…

      • +2

My guess is that with most (all?) smart bulbs, a hardwired dimmer won't be able to dim the lights.

What usually happens is that the bulb will light up if the dimmer is set to full brightness (and the switch is on). It will remain on as you turn the dimmer down until you reach a point where the voltage becomes too low, at which point it turns off. (Oh look, a rotary style switch for your lights!)

      • I way prefer the colour ones…

Is the 'white' light on the coloured ones as good as this one?

        • Depends what you mean by that. Brighter, or whiter? They're quite cold when set to 'white', I usually run them a bit warmer. I just checked the bulb in our bathroom to be sure it was a Hue White (it is), and it is much warmer then the colour bulbs at 'white'. If I set the colour bulbs to 'bright', then they become warmer than the Hue White bulbs.

Not sure what all that means.

I have colour bulbs in my office and usually them at the 'bright' setting, but sometimes on a whiter setting during the day. We have colour bulbs in our lounge too, and I had to custom program those to keep my wife pleased (didn't like any of the presets).

The white bulbs may be slightly brighter than the colour…I'm not sure. The colour bulbs in my office go bright enough for me, but I know there's brighter bulbs out there.

Yeah, even “dimmable” LEDs tend to only step down in 3-4 brightness levels.

I believe these (like the Xiaomi) you keep the light on full brightness & use the app/remote to dim the lights (I.e. they’re electronically dimmable, rather then using a switch dimming).

    • Correct, these shouldn't be used with dimmer switches. The "dimmable" part refers to app controls.

      • Philips Hue sell a wireless dimmer switch product Philips Hue Smart LED Light Dimmer Switch.

This is where the confusion in this thread arises. Saying "shouldn't be used with dimmer switches" can be interpreted as "doesn't work with the Philips Hue Dimmer Switch.

It would have been much better to say "hardwired dimmer switches. This should already been cleared up in my comment above, but it looks like I forgot to mention the Philips product.

    • I've removed the word "dimmable" from the deal to avoid any further confusion. (I used it because it came from the Bunnings product description, and forgot that "dimmable" is used to describe dumb LED globes that are dimmable as opposed to ones that are not.

      • and forgot that "dimmable" is used to describe dumb LED globes that are dimmable

The electronics require to make LED globes "dimmable" is quite complex. I don't think I'd call them "dumb".

        • Oh, yeah! Should have said semi-smart to avoid any further confusion 😉

However, I think it would be fair to say that "smart" is now used to denote those globes that can be remotely controlled/programmed and the rest, being not smart, are just plain dumb 😜

  • These require the Hue Hub, correct?

    • Yeh. Anyone got a good deal for the hub now? Missed out yesterday

      • seems like the deal for the starter kits mentioned in the OP are still valid

        • Of course 😉

Same OP posted (and maintains) both deals.

        Just buy one this, $49
        if you got Amazon prime.

      • Can I work with just google home?

        • No, you need the bridge (it's a ZigBee controller).

They will work directly with Amazon Echo devices though (they have ZigBee support built in).

$71.20 at JB atm. 10% price beat at Bunnings, or 5% at Officeworks.

        • Did that just drop in price in the last 6 hours? I thought I'd checked Bunnings, Amazon, Officeworks, and JB Hi-Fi when I researched the price. Maybe I missed JB Hi-Fi.

I expect Bunnings' price will probably drop tomorrow to match.

          • @robinCTS: I reckon so. I checked JB last night for another thread and it was the usual $89.

            • +1

@Mrgt900: Nah. I reckon I missed checking JB Hi-Fi. Their catalogues run Thursday to Wednesday, so I would expect a price change to occur between midnight last night and opening hours this morning.

EDIT: WTF? It's Wednesday today?! Well, that means the above makes no sense anymore. Dunno what's going o… mmm, more beer…

    • Not if you use them with the Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa or Home Assistant.

      Otherwise, yes.

      • +1

You also need the ones with inbuilt controller. The mini ones afaik can't control lights.

Looking for a lifx deal. Need 1000+ lumens for the living room

    • Thanks for making me search for them here. Found (and fixed) the one active deal that had actually expired.

  • Anyone selling a hue bridge in brisbane?

    • Currently, $76.95 at Bunnings seems to be the best price, other than a $73.10 price beat at Officeworks.

Most of the Bunnings around Brisbane have stock, but only the Officeworks in Woolloongabba has (limited) stock.

      • I was thinking of getting the starter kit with the switch. Should’ve got one yesterday :(

        • Same :-/

        • +1

That $96 deal is still available on Amazon, and at Bunnings. (In fact it's 90¢ cheaper today!)

Plus it contains Ambiance bulbs rather than the ones in this deal, which I prefer as I like the whiter daylight colour (6500K) better.

          • @robinCTS: I need bayonet bulbs :(

            • +1

@dylanando: Philips Hue Starter Kits don't come in bayonet version; bayonet bulbs are only available singly, last time I checked with Philips Aus HQ in 2018.

            • @dylanando: Depending on your light fittings you could use B22 to E27 bulb adapters like these with the E27 kit.

Note that those are neither the best price nor the shortest ones available. (And these are not necessarily the best price either, just the best price when I put them in my cart months ago.)

              • @robinCTS: I think it’s a sign not to get them. I’ll wait till the bridge is on special again thanks tho

                • @dylanando: Historically, the lowest the bridge has ever been is $57-$60. The $38 deal was a once in a year, incredible price.

If you also want the dimmer (switch), historically that was once down to $23.66 but typically gets only down to around $28.

$57 + $28 = $85, not much less than the $96 kit. You could always use adaptors for the bulbs, or sell them on gumtree (shouldn't have any trouble selling them for $20, each).

      • Could get it yesterday from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/470973 for $38 :-)
But I think there will soon be similar deal again.

        • Not likely at that price. (Unless you have some inside information?) That was a once in a year (Amazon Prime Day) super special price.

More typically it only drops to $57-$60. And sometimes it's 5-6 months between those special prices.

    • Was $31 on Monday, not that that helps you.

If you just need a zigbee controller what about the Echo Plus gen1? Still $49 for Prime Members I believe that can control any zigbee lights like Hue globes.

  • +2

Or (if you're an Amazon Prime member) get an Echo Plus (1st Gen) with built-in smart home hub for $49 instead of the Hue Bridge.
