What to Do with Scammers Information from Gumtree

Dear fellow ozbargainers,

Most likely already been answered in the forums however I struggled to find it. Anyways, so I purchased a Macbook Pro from someone in Alice Springs, and as soon as I paid, he stopped responding to my emails and phone calls. I know this was a dumb idea however he assured me that he is not a scammer by providing me with his passport and medicare card details. So my question is, what can I do about this? I have his mobile number, his ABN number, passport photo and medicare card photo.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Cheers

Eh. Very likely you have another victim or victims' ABN number, passport photo, and medicare card photo. The only things you can be sure are actually the scammers' is the email address and mobile number, and even that even in the short-term because the email could be a burner and the number a prepaid.

Only way to confirm is if the scammer video called and verified their photo ID with a face.

No, I know for sure that it is his passport and medicare. I am pretty sure he isnt a usual scammer and did it just as a once off. I can say this as I did a bank transfer and his name matched his passport and medicare details.

Bank transfer to "name, bsb, acc no."? That makes it….. more reliable? But banks don't actually use the name to transfer money, only the BSB and Account number really matter.

I'm just wary that a scammer who's smart enough to actually pull off a scam, is also going to be stupid enough to be giving out their own ID documents.

Have you googled their full name to see if there are other victims?

        • Yes, there seems to be no one else with a similar situation with this individual. Their telephone and facetime is still working just they never pick up.

@agentsho: Honestly - if you think you actually have their ID docs - call their local police station and see if they can help. Report this to the police: https://www.cyber.gov.au/report, and see if you can get your money back first.

    Alice spring
…. Name is pretty but I heard anyone sane should run away from dealing with it. In any way.

I saw this on a current affairs show..the scammer tricked a buyer into showing his Id…the scammer then used the buyers id to scam other people….the buyer ended up getting abused from all the people that got scammed

Thats horrible but not in this case. I know 95% sure that it is his ID and details

You are too trusting, this guy scammed you, don't believe anything he tells you.

Sounds like you’ve got a case of “Larry and Barry“

Scams can be pretty sophisticated and I really doubt you have the guys actual ID.

Do Medicare cards have a photo on them?

It's just that his mobile number is also linked to other applications that also give me information about him. They all match his name and year of birth. Still could be a completely different name but I really doubt so.

Refer to Larry and Barry above, the scammer convinced you he was giving you real details, he's a good scammer.

stupid move first of all buying a macbook on gumtree from an interstate seller.. when are people going to learn?!

  • Yeah I dunno Police or Coast Guard

Disappointed that bikies have not been mentioned yet.

    This is the obvious solution.

  • have you been to the police?

  • +3

Why are you adamant that you have the real details of the scammer? Because the scammer said so? In denial that you got scammed by this 'one off' scammer?

  • How much did you pay him?

  • If the scammer has stolen ID from someone, whats stopping them from opening a bank account online in that stolen person's name, receiving your payment, then bailing? No ties to the scammer.
