Student Flights Lied to Us?

Hi there,

My partner and I found flights for a great price, but we want the peace and mind of a travel agency booking the flights for us, so we went to Student Flights to price beat it. They were able to price beat it and even printed out the invoice ready for signature and payment, but the attendant said that her manager may be able to find a better price for us, so we can either pay now for the quote we got or wait till she emails us confirming whether we can get a better price or not. We chose to wait because we thought "If we can get a better price, that's great. But if they can't, then we can pay the quoted price".

However, half an hour later, we got an email from the attendant saying her manager couldn't recreate the original price we showed on our pdf, and said they can price beat the price they DID get which was a couple hundred dollars more. They however could not sell us the tickets they originally quoted to us (and printed off).

I'm a little peeved off because they straight up lied to us saying they were looking for a better price when they were actually just trying to see whether they can recreate it or not.

My question is, can we use the printed quote they gave us to get flight centre or STA travel to price beat instead?

    It isn't clear if you asked if the original price-matched price would be held (while they looked for other deals).

      That's true, we didn't explicitly say "the original price-matched price will be held while they see whether they can find a better price for us". Hence, I'm asking whether we can use the printed quote they gave us to get STA Travel or Flight Centre to price match?

        Anyway, just try to get a price match. You will either succeed or not.

    Probably. But don’t let much time delay. The other agencies may have a disclaimer that they’ll on beat/match on the date on the quote (or +/- x no of days).

    Yes, hurry up and get to as many other travel agents as possible. Even try going back to the airline to price match if they have a match policy (e.g. Virgin do).

      Turns out flight centre doesn't match student flights and sta travel said they need to get approval because they couldn't get the flights so cheap on their system so they'll contact us the next day.

        I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Student Flights were never able to get it for the price they quoted you.

        Their sales associate either made a mistake or there was some sort of error on their system. Their response of saying to leave it with them and see what they can do was just a ruse to weasel their way out of it. The reason I say this is that their price seems to be much lower than what the airline themselves and other agents are able to do.

    If you haven't paid/placed a deposit, you do not have a contract.

    If you do not have a contract, you do not have recourse.

    What peace of mind? There is nothing that they can guarantee you. Book directly with the airlines and then you will have peace of mind.

      Peace of mind there's someone physical we can find in a store and inquire about the flights instead of over the phone.

        What's there to inquire about flights? You just turn up on the day and if it's delayed, you wait.

        I travel pretty regularly and can honestly say that travel agents are a pain. Sometimes I might even pay a little more (within reason, maybe a few %) to book with the airline because I don't want to have to deal with agents. Maybe if you don't know what you're doing and you want to go on some complicated round the world trip with multiple legs then yes, an agent might be able to help you out. For a simple return flight, though, cut the middle man.

        Also, it's much easier to deal with the airline directly and when you're at the airport and something goes wrong (the most likely place for something to go wrong), you'll be dealing with the airline, not your agent anyway.

    Sounds like there was a sale on with a limited number of seats for that date and flight. They probably sold out in the time period between the first meeting with the travel agent and the time she spoke to the manager. Kind of like when Jetstar has a good sale and you have to be quick or you miss out. No one will be able to match or beat it if the sale seats are sold out. Try different dates and book yourself online if you are successful.

    The title is misleading unless she explicitly said she would hold the original price for you whilst her manager looked.
