Telstra Cable to Telstra NBN HFC Tier Speed Drop (resolved)

Prior to NBN coming into my area, Telstra Cable has been greasing me up by giving free speed upgrades to 100mbps. I'm guessing they don't want me to go anywhere else.

Few days ago, I've swapped over to Telstra NBN hfc. My speeds are down to 50mbps. I was told if I swapped over, my plan, speeds, limits etc don't change. I've called them to ask what's going on and they said it takes a while to properly set up and I should 100mbps soon.

So has anyone taken note how long it took to see their speeds back upto 100mbps?

*I've used 50/100 just to keep it easy.

Not critical but Cable is HFC, why the fuss getting a tech to come over and install a modem + router. I was happy with my old 2in1 device. Now I've got 2 seperate devices.

you're on the 50/20 plan, not the 100/40.
it should be immediate if they upgraded you to the 100/40 plan.

Incorrect, it can take up to 24 hours. They provision on 50/20 then overnight it goes to 100/40. It's a Telstra thing :(. They told me it would be done in four hours, but I found it only activated after midnight the night after installation (around 14 hours afterwards). I'm suspecting they place an order with NBN (the wholesaler) to increase the speed and those orders only kick in every midnight.

I've gone from 115/5 -> 96/40 with no problems whatsoever. The 20mbit difference in downstream is not noticeable, but the 35mbit difference in upstream is amazing.

Basically, because the NBN tech verifies that everything is OK from a NBN perspective. This is just part of the migration process as we move from the old to the new, it's a one off as the infrastructure moves from Telstra to NBN. Two separate devices is the norm, because the NTD (the black NBN box) basically stays with the house/unit/premise and the router, etc is yours/your ISPs responsibility.

"just give her a few months to get up to speed"

    that old chestnut!

We also swapped a few months ago. When connected using the NBN modem we get speeds around 80mb/s but with the old 2 in 1 we got 120mb/s, a considerable drop. What we did was just swap back to the old 2 in 1, activate it using the conventional method and suprisingly it still works. We're paying for nbn100 but somehow still have usage of the old cable router. You should try it.
Regardless it's silly that the NBN speeds are throttled while with cable speed boost you would get the fastest possible speed.

    • I'll definitely be giving that a go.

  • Swapped back to old device like TNT suggested and voila, like nothing has happened. Got my 100 back!

That's because by plugging in your old device, it bypasses the NBN HFC connection. (Yes, they're running HFC Telstra, HFC NBN and Foxtel HFC TV all on the same line.. lol). What will happen is the Telstra HFC (non NBN) connection will eventually be disabled when they update their backend, so it only works for a short while.

  • I'd still be pushing for your NBN speed to be set to 100/40.

If I'm not mistaken Telstra Cable is 120/5…. The extra upload speed on NBN is well worth sorting it out.

    • Yea, you're right.

    • Yeah, except my Cable does 116mbps/5mbps all day long, without a dip. My NBN connection at my beach house runs at 40mbps (despite paying for 100mbps) and dips lower than that on occasion

      • Yeah HFC should hit close to 100 down. Other NBN god knows what you'll get.

    Just ring Telstra.

  • nobloddynetwork, nbn

    what a problem to have…

after years on adsl then nbn Ive moved to optus wireless. no its not faster but its steady and it works

my 100/50 went as slow as 64kbs in the wet… every time they fixed someone elses in the street mine slowed, almost to a halt with the old, bad copper in the street. then they play whack-a-mole with you, the whole sailer and the nbn… All shite! NBN is a WOFT&M so far, thank you liberals

  • I'm planning to stay as long as possible on Telstra Cable as I'm happy with 100/5.

Telstra's happy about this as well as they don't have to pay the NBN reseller fee … but it's just a matter of time before I join the ranks of aussiebroadband.

  • I'm now in a similar situation. Pre-NBN I was getting 100 Mbps on HFC (after Tesltra gave us the speed boost at no extra cost).

My NBN installation was scheduled for 22 August, but on 24 July, an NBN guy showed up unannounced (although I think I missed a phone call from him shortly before) and did the installation, but I'm limited to 50 Mbps down.

However, according to Telstra's system, my order is still pending and they can't change anything until it's complete.

So they told me that I'll have to wait until 22 August to get my 100 Mbps back.

They also said that, if my old HFC connection had not already been disconnected, they would have been able to update their system now to mark the order complete.

Has anyone else experienced this, where NBN actually turned up well before the scheduled appointment date?

  • OP were you able to negotiate while moving service? I was only offered the speedboost. so 100mbps for $90pm.
