Getting Random Pop-up Ads on Chrome (Windows)

Hi, lately I have started receiving random pop-up ads on my chrome browser on windows 10. I have scanned my PC using defender and using advanced option to check for malware on Chrome. It all comes out clean, but the ads keep coming. What else can I do to fix this issue?

  • Go to settings (chrome://settings), down the bottom you have Advanced ⬇, which will open up new options, scroll down the very bottom and Reset Settings.

    • Thanks, will try resetting.

  • Try to check your Chrome extensions. Go to extensions and check if there is something that should be there. Also, make sure you install the AdBlock extension. You can filter out pages that you want to support by allowing ads (banners) on their website.

    • I run pi-hole to block ads on my network, so don't have any browser extensions.

      • If you tether to your phone (without using pi-hole and everything) do you get the same issue, also worth looking at your programs list in case theres something the scanner missed?

        • Haven't tried tethering to phone. But will do that and see if there is any difference.

@RSmith: Have you fixed the problem? I am curious about what solved it.

      • Would recommend using uBlock Origin as well as pihole, it will block elements more smoothly and before the request even goes to the pihole (so should be faster).

The only real solution is format c: /s

    • /s to make the drive bootable, or /s for sarcasm? ;)

      • The "/s" makes the drive a bootable drive by copying the file command.com to C: at the end of the procedure.

  • Is it the notifications that pop up on the bottom right of the screen?

    • Yes.

You've been tricked somehow through a dodgy website into allowing it permission to send notifications. Easy to fix.

        Option 1
Go to chrome://settings/content/notifications and review the list of URLs that have "allow" for notifications. Remove any you don't recognise.

        Option 2

Next time it comes up, note the domain/URL that appears on the notification box.

Then go to chrome://settings/content/all and find that domain, remove / reset any permissions for it, I guarantee it has "allow notifications" enabled and this is the cause of your problem.

    Download and run these programs:
    AdwCleaner
    R Kill

    • Thanks.

  • Does the ads still appear when you run Firefox/Edge?

    • No. Not in other browsers.

I know what the answer is, and no one has said it yet.
I know how to fix it, and what causes it.

Chrome is an absolute joke now. Get on Firefox you won't look back

  • if this happens to all or random website, not just a particular one, most likely your PC is infected by malware.
    maybe try malwarebyte
