They've dropped the Quad DAC for this variant, LG glues the batteries in place for no logical reason, some of the slowest updates around, and their handsets depreciate quicker than any other brand.

To make sure the dogs don't get to them

I'm still waiting for Android P update on my G7 ffs

        • +1

I was very happy with Oreo, Android 9 is annoying IMO it kills apps too frequently & It means you don't have this problem
          Have a look here https://dontkillmyapp.com/

        • What are you unable to do without this update you are so annoyed not to have?
I didn't know I was missing out on the ability to do anything. What apps will I not be able to install that I am not aware of as yet? Which apps that I can't use are going to cause the most issue going forward?
At least the camera is working great and can use the latest version of gcam. Are there any other issues not having the latest version of Android is causing that I should watch out for?

          • @Major Mess: I just like having updates available to be honest a bit "ocd" feeling.

But seeing NITINR's comment reminds me I should do research lol

    • +1

Wow so weird, I was looking at the difference between g8s and g8 and I'm still stumped as to why they are releasing this variant at all…

      • To piss me off, that's why. Only reason I went with LG was the Ultrawide and DAC.

    • It's why I am ditching them after 3 variants.

Sick of them and I don't need the Quad-DAC any longer. Will just use USB OTG with a USB DAC.

This is a good deal, though. I would have expected north of $1k. Wonder what JB will come out with.

      • +1

Quad DAC is the main reason I'm interested in LG Phones. It's obviously not relevant to many, but it's exactly what I want in a phone (plus a decent battery and camera if possible). I guess I'll upgrade from my V20 to a G7 when a good deal turns up, then reappraise in a few years time.

        • Same boat RE the DAC. A G7 or a V40. Maybe you want a V40?

        • There have been very good deals on the V30 recently. Somewhat for the V40.

    • +1

agree, "their handsets depreciate quicker than any other brand"

Decided to keep away from LG mobile phone since my last G6 fingerprint sensor stopped working (can't find the hardware) after 1 year and then camera stopped focusing.

      • There's 2 years warranty right?

      • Maybe if you buy at full inflated "Harvey Norman Tax" price it is. Otherwise if on sale, probably not.

    • +2

      No Quad DAC? No deal.

    • +2

Been reliable for quite awhile. Years.

It may not be a brick but these depreciate like bricks …lol i suppose some people still buy this crap.

        • Yep they sure do, I got the LG G6 3 months after release for $490 and was one of the best phones I ever had. But hey, you wanna get hung up on what others do with their money, that's your prerogative.

        • It may not be a brick but these depreciate like bricks

Bricks don't actually depreciate. If anything, brick houses are more valued than other forms of wall cladding material, especially nowadays with the flammable cladding fiasco…

…lol i suppose some people still buy this crap.

I personally don't look at resale value when I am looking to buy a phone.

Also, a phone that quickly depreciates in value does not necessarily mean that it is "crap".

        • +1

Where can I buy one of these heavily depreciated models secondhand? Might do as a network audio player on an older amp I have. Whenever I looked on ebay etc, the pricing is kept higher than used Samsung.
As for new models, it took ages for the G6 and V30 to get to a reasonable sale price compared to previous models.

    NotchWithChin is unacceptable in 2019.

    • +4

Need something to hold onto without pressing on the screen 😉

    • I'm surprise LG still stick with notch.

    • +2

      Great summary 👌

    • +3

Expecting plenty negs from the usual suspects.

You’re referencing reviews to a different model (G8) which is not available in Australia yet, and is a more expensive handset.

      • +6

Sounds like it reinforces what theearth was saying then 🤔

      • +8

I don't see anything wrong with providing the reviews.

You’re referencing reviews to a different model (G8) which is not available in Australia yet, and is a more expensive handset

I knew that ,even the more expensive G8 can't beat the S10e ,this stripped down version will be even worse in results.

        This is my point.

Just wait for $749 S10e or $899 S10 deals for the better.

        • there is the $899 S10 deal?

    • Not usual suspect, so I negged

  • +9

Can't justify buying a $850 LG phone which can drop price to half in less than 6 months time

    • I can justify with my Price protection. One of the best brands for claiming quickly suckers.

      • How many time you can claim?

        • +1

No limit to Price Protection number of claims (e.g. 28 degrees, Coles Mastercard). Usually has to be more than $10 per drop. And a limit of $600 claimable per item on Coles MC, and $1000 on 28 Degrees. So unless it's going to drop to less than $249 in 2 years, should be fine.

          • @nickj: Coles used to be 3 years til they were bought out.
            Wish I jumped on earlier!

      • Which card has the price protection?

        • 28 Degrees and Coles MC, and it's an optional add-on. An additional fee of 1% of outstanding balance applies to all statements. Avoid by paying off before the statement is issued.

        • Check out Coles Mastercard, or 28 Degrees for longer.

Buy the v30 for 400 and then buy this in a years time for 400 and end up with 2 phones for the price of one.

Having said that I got my v30+ early and have been completely happy with it, and there's no way I would ever be happy again without a wide angle camera

    • Don’t forget the real value will be less due to inflation so you effectively pay less than 400 in real terms

  • -1

    Impressive notch.

  • +1

beat the JB V30+ price please

  • This is kinda unrelated but I got the S10+ on release date at 1.2k EPP. Legit, best phone I've ever used pretty much. The updates do come monthly, the camera is a great all rounder (3 lenses, night mode, pro mode), the screen is… well brilliant, the speaker sound is awesome, the software is also awesome for once (well done on One UI, Sammy), there's a huuge variety of cases, the design is sick, the 4100 mAh battery does pretty well (but I did have to go through heaps of settings for this, still worth it). Can't praise this phone enough.

    • +3

      "kinda" unrelated

      • He is trying to tell us spend you money wisely.

  • have been an LG fan since 2013 LG g pro, using v35 atm. For lg phones, just treat it like a toy, get the Korean version if you want the best features and quicker updates. G8 in Korea has 3 rear cameras and only 2 in north America and Australia. At the moment g8 Korea versions should be down to 700-800 aud now.LG has the weirdest strategy and weakest marketing, but their devices are solid.

  • +1

Don't like that they sold this version in Australia. The only reason to get this vs an aus stock S10 is that LG uses Snapdragon 855. On the other hand if it drops in price perhaps it could be our local stock price equivalent of OnePlus 7/zenfone 6.
This version missing out on the quad DAC, 128gb storage, and QHD screen of the normal g8. There's a camera difference too if someone wants to detail that.

  • +1

I think LG is the alternative for those of us who prefer Qualcomm SD 845/855 processor in Australia.

My relative got the G7 with SD845 just below AUD $500 early this year and is very happy.

G7 with SD845 will be an amazing budget phone and should be available around the AUD$400 price point.
