JB Hi-Fi Phone Plans

I'm looking to upgrade my current iPhone 7 to a newer model (specifically the iPhone XR)

I went in to JB Hifi yesterday and saw they do their own phone plans on the Telstra network. They had the current deal available

iPhone XR 128gb with unlimited talk and text within Australia and 80gb of data (on the telstra network) for $93 per month over 24 months. So min cost $2232

Considering the phone itself retails for $1299 that leaves $933 over 24 months for the phone plan. That works out to be $39 per month. Seems very cheap for an 80gb plan on the Telstra network

I feel like I'm missing something. Is there a catch here that I'm missing?

Optus give you 100GB for $94 per month so it's not unusual.

However, we're 4-6 weeks away from the new iPhones being released. Even if you don't want the latest ones, the XR will reduce in price significantly. Not worth getting stuck in a 24 month contract for one now.

    • iPhone XR will not reduce in price significantly, even if the new iPhone has released. iPhone has always been good at keeping its price, and the new iPhone will be more expensive than this XR.

My point is, there's no point in waiting for iPhone as it doesn't work the same way in pricing like Android phone.

      • This is not true at all, especially for contract prices. Definitely will decrease when new ones come out.

        • Look at http://www.optus.com.au/shop/mobile/phones/iphone/iphone-x iphone X plan. See the difference in price with iphone XR and XS.

Or see price history in Ozb.

@yummypinacolada: Like for like, same capacity X and XS on the same 50GB plan:

That's a $12 per month reduction for phones with the exact same RRP when released. Over a 24 month contract, that's $288 difference.

I'm not sure how you're suggesting older generation iPhones don't decrease in price when new ones are released.

Also, while that difference isn't relatively large, it's because the X and XS are essentially the same phone. The new gen will be all-new 'tick' cycle so demand will be higher while older models demand will be lower so expect deeper discounts.

            • @Hybroid: iPhone X RRP when its released was lower than XS and higher than XR. That's why I told you to look at both. New iPhone will always be more expensive, but it doesn't make the old generation decrease in price significantly.

              • @yummypinacolada: iPhone X and XS are the exact same RRP at release.

XR is a whole different model line and cannot be compared to X/XS.

                • @Hybroid: Well, its $1579 and $1629. You need to look at iphone X deal in the past on Ozb. There's never a significant decreased in price, there are 2 deals offering 256gb Iphone X for $100p/m back in early 2018

You clearly said there's a 'significant' decrease before, but its has never been for iPhone.

                  • @yummypinacolada: And you just comparing $288 difference with older generation. Its like comparing Note 9 and Note 8 at the same time with $200 difference, and you consider those price difference as a price drop for Note 8.

                    • @yummypinacolada: Planetandre when it comes to iPhones. Because it’s popular and is priced high, you can’t win on here lol

      • Looking at that link the $93 optus plan is for 4gb per month. 100gb is $104 per month

        • $93 for the 64GB and $104 for the 128GB. Regardless, not very far off Telstra offer.

Now I can't get Tom Jones out of my head.

      • Bloody hell - Kylie Minogue is now messing with my mind.

        • I know which one I'd prefer in my head / mind.

  • A lot of the good jB plans, are for port in or new customers only

  • Not sure if this is a good tip or not but if you are in the market for an iPad then buying from Optus on a 2 year plan will cost you about $150 more than buying outright from Apple….. with the added benefit of 100 GB of data per month. Awesome for hot spotting or when you are travelling and don’t want to use hotel wifi.

  • Nothing wrong with iphone 7 if you ask me.
    Its an excellent phone.
OP is far better off keeping his iphone 7 and moving onto Kogan's extra large annual prepaid plan ($315pa) which works out at $26/mth for 40GB.

I mean who needs or can even use up 80GB/mth on a phone????????????????????
