Groupon Leaked My Credit Card Details

Got a call from 28 degrees this morning asking if I'd made any donations this morning to the AM Cancer Soc…. pretty heavy sleeper so no, wasn't me. This is a new card, I use it for travel and online shopping where there might be an international transaction fee. I've used this new card once… to buy from Groupon. The card has been with me at all times and I used a work computer which has beefcake security so I'm fairly certain that Groupon was the source of my leak.

Card is cancelled and I've messaged Groupon, my last tangent is to warn people to check their credit cards :)

    Zero evidence. Righto then.

I would think those that work for groupon would think their work.computer is beefcake as well…

all companies have been hacked before, nothing is beefcake these days
    not even government

Careful not to make an libel statements, without out proof. Companies tend to not like that kind of thing. Maybe word it to offer your opinion and thoughts.

You used your credit card on a work computer and you have no clue whats running in the background - spyware , keylogger hijacked browser etc.

  • In my own opinion, my personal security set up is better than my work's. A lot of the set up is dated. And not everything has 2 step verification, which has been exploited before. Particularly as a lot of people have clicked malicious links too - there is a lot of internet security training going on now after some ridiculously obvious phishing attempts actually got clicks! Big company too; meaning it's more of a target.

So don't rule out the work computer; I don't make any purchases on mine.

  • Not everything is hack-proof. Your card could've been cloned using pay wave or ram scraping. Or your work computer is not as secure as you think.

Why do people find it so hard to believe that groupon could be hacked? This is literally the only expense that I've had on my current card and it's the only one that's been compromised (2 others I use much more frequesntly

At work we have multi factor authentication, no admin access to computers, dodgy site blocked, and forced updates everytime there's a patch. I trust this computer's security more than groupon's… are they still storing people's credit cards without permission? these things always come out months or years later and they people act surprised.

      I believe it.

Something similar to me happened with Agoda. Went on a trip to Vietnam and about 2 months after the trip both my 28 Degrees AND my CBA CC were used on the same day by theives in South Africa.

      So either 2 things happened:
      1) A place I used both cards (which was only Agoda) was breached any my CC information was stolen, or
      2) Multiple places I used my CCs in Vietnam happen to be part of the same criminal syndicate and I had my credit cards stolen while over there.

Logically, it's the first one. Particularly as the only other place I used my CBA CC card in Vietnam was at a tailor.
