4G Connection for Home Use? Who Is The Best Value for Money?

Looking at moving place and the only connection available for that house is Telstra Velocity, plans are expensive and upload is not good compared to NBN.

Considering a 4G connection instead, anybody used one of these before?

Even something to bundle into my phone might be an option too pending costs? (Currently on boost yearly plan though)

Only concern would be ping times while gaming, currently have nbn fixed wireless and its been great so I am hoping a wireless 4g plan would be similar.

Could try picking up a bunch of pre-paid starter packs when they're on sale. You can get 20-40gigs for less than $10. Might be a hassle for long term use though.

Data limits will be the limiting factor.

I'm on Optus 200Gb at $60/month, off peak speeds around 100/8 decline to 30/8 through peak hours, ping generally in the 20-30ms range (worst has been 36, best has been 14ms).
I'm 800m from the tower, modem is hard coded to connect on Optus' High Bandwidth Band 40 channel and my Huawei E5186 Modem can aggregate 2 connections.
I have a roof mounted external antenna for a direct line of sight to the tower, but I'm on the lobe edges of the transmitters, which is probably the main reason for my speed decrease in peak hours.

I deliberately "cheaped out" on my external antenna and bought an Omnidirectional unit, hoping that Optus release 5G connections in my area in the near future and didn't want to over-capitalise on Yagi Antennas that might rapidly become obsoleted.

Overall I'm paying less money for a connection that is as fast or faster than my decrepit FttN NBN connection and we rarely get even remotely close to 200Gb usage, so for our purposes it's perfect. We've had this setup since January and so far, 2 dropouts only. One was a nationwide Optus outage, the other possibly related to over-capacity on the tower as a neighboring one was down for maintenance.

    Optus also have 500Gb plans.

Nobody else does any more than 250Gb, and those are 12/1 speed restricted services.

    • What are you pinging for those ping tests?

Honestly you have pretty much sold me, is the antenna on the roof outside or can you get ones for indoor use?

Optus seems the way to go, 500gb should be plenty for my usage.

From my quick googleing around Optus seemed like the best value.

      • I will say this.
        Your mileage may vary greatly.
I am currently using an AC800s.
I have reached max of 140/40 off peak and average 40/12 peak.
DL and ping can vary widely.
In saying that I was playing a lot of RDR2 multiplayer death match etc and it was doing okay.
When I was using a e5186 max i used to get was 40.
I don't have an external antenna and all equipment is stock.

      • All based off my historic Ookla speedtest.net figures.

As per dasher86, YMMV… I did a bunch of speed testing with my phone prior to signing up.

The antenna I'm using is an outdoor rated unit. the cheap indoor units wouldn't last a single Summer before the plastic cracked/buckled.

        • Got to be careful testing with phones.
Most phone have higher carrier aggregation than most modems.

    • Thank you

  • Look at my thread. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/470932

!20 GB for $65 (12months contract) plus you can use the sim to make calls and txts.

  • Been using my phone plan for almost a year now. I'm on a $95 plan for 200GB with Optus. Purchased an extra sim card attached to my account (Data pool)
Put that into a mobile 4G router. Have 3 people using the internet and a couple of smart devices connected at all times - Just enough to last the month.

    • Can you still get a no monthly fee shared data sim from Optus? Or you are paying extra to get that SIM?

      • 1 time $5 fee.
