BP Staff Trying to Pull a Swifty

Had something dodgy happen to me at BP Last night stopped and put fuel in and grabbed me a Powerade

The staff member scanned 2 drinks in and gave me an 8c discount.

Didn't give me the second drink..

When I asked why it was more than what I expected he said if you buy fuel you buy one get one free

This was a lie I was charged $9 for both drinks and got a $1.38 discount for fuel.

I can only imagine they have a kpi for add on sales and he thought he would just try it on?

Anybody else had something similar happen?

  • I always have them ask me if i want one of their in store specials, but I always decline. I've never had them go ahead and scan in something I didn't ask for or want. That's just a scam to line the franchisee's pockets.

I would send some robust feedback to BP head office in Australia about this particular servo's behavior.

By the way did you get him to reverse the double scanning and just pay for one drink?

By the way, did you get him to reverse the double scanning and just pay for one drink?

OP please tell me you did not just accept that this happened and walked away.

      • It kinda reads like he paid for both. I assume he went and got a second from the fridge - worst case. O.o

I made them refund me the extra bottle of Powerade as I picked it up looking at the receipt so I ended up paying about $3.2 for a single bottle of Powerade.

But still it just struck me as dodgy as hell

$3.2 for 1 and buy one get one free for $9?

          how does this work?

          • @SnoozeAndLose: Go the 8c discount with only oke bottle. They refunded the 2nd bottle

            • @hikaru78: So 1 bottle is $4.5 and buy one get 1 free for $9? If buy one get one free should be $9 each and give 8 cents discount?

Powerade costs $4.50? Hand in your ozbargain membership

TLDR: If OP actually received both drinks; OP was told it was BOGOF (So $2.25ea), minus the extra 8c/litre discount = $1.56ea.
instead, OP was charged full price ($3.81ea).

On a side note, OP pumped 17 litres of fuel. OP would have needed ~56 litres for the drinks to be free (providing it was actually BOGOF).

Nah, he was told that when the BP guy tried to pull the fast one. OP only meant to buy the one powerade, at full price, $4.50. OzBargain membership revocation upheld.

Yep, I didn't read, it was too long..

I would have grabbed the second one from the fridge on my exit ;)

Edit: https://www.google.com/search?q=bp+bogof+powerade :D The power of OzBargain's SEO!

@HighAndDry: Oh, and Staff member was half true. OP needed to purchase both Powerades to receive the 8c off, but it's not BOGOF. Obviously not worth it when you factor in being $9, not $4.50, and especially not receiving the second drink!

@rompastompa: Haha good thing OP caught it. He would've had to pump 56L (from your calcs above) just to break even, and couldn't ever get the first Powerade for free since it's capped at 100L.

Thats the ozbargain way. Membership and credibility upgraded

  • Isn't the scam that that was his break sorted?

Probably worth double checking the receipt as I’ve seen discounts being listed separately (usually at the bottom).
    Eg.
    Fuel $xx
    Powerade x2 $9
    Massage lube $15
    Ansell Ultrathins $10

    Discount
    Fuel -$1.38
    Promotion -$4.5

Still, scanning extra items without consulting customers (even if it results in cheaper overall price) is pretty dodgy.

    • Massage lube $15

Thats a LOT of massage lube. Did you bath in it?

      • +4

Probably would still be in the bath if so

So you are saying there is a happy ending?

      • His tightarse is getting ripped off

    • I get that one Powerade bottle was for the homemade fleshlight you were constructing, but what's the second bottle for?

  • At Woolworths petrol back when milk was the same price as woolies, $2. I bought 3 x 2L bottles to get the extra 4c discount. I new the discount would be more than one bottle of milk. However the guy didn’t scan one. I was home before I realised what had happened. I lost 40c

Did they ask for Swifty's consent?

So it's not just radio DJs?

I used to work at a Servo and yes its really common since "the man" asked us to cross sell these promo items at least 30 of them just to meet the quota..some deals are easier to sell than other and some even beneficial for us like BOGOF chocolate, mint or any kinds of BOGOF..we tend to ask whether you want to get another one for free..some health conscious people usually said "nah i'm fine" and that's when we scan the other one and keep it on the side for "snacks"..thanks for buying us chocolate but its unethical for them to just swipe and not ask you if you want one or not.

Some deals are just stupid like buy 2 Magnum for $6 when the price of each is like $3.20 or something…even saying it makes us sounds stupid, you need some Harvey Specter level of charm to be able to sell that and not sounds stupid for saving them 0.40c

    • +1

I dont mind a deal. I only bought on drink to the counter and he charged me for two. If i wanted the deal i would have taken two out of the fridge. I got the feeling he would have been quote happy for me to leave with one but charge me for two

  • Most of these sales people are told to on-sell additional items.
    Its not just at BP.

McDonalds has been doing this for the last 30 years. The kids were always taught to ask if you would like a drink or fries with your burger. Thats where they make their profit! Though not so much lately.
