Has an eBay store ever refused to cancel your order?

A couple of Fridays ago, late in the evening, I placed an order for something at 'apusexpress2'. I instantly realised I had submitted the order with the wrong delivery address (I have both my home and work addresses in eBay). Within 10 minutes I had submitted a request to cancel the order and had placed a new order with the desired address.
I've had to do this a few times before and it's never been an issue.

Come Monday morning, I get an emails notifying me that my order was not able to be cancelled and that both orders had shipped.
I contacted the seller and got the response "Both orders were already shipped out and therefore we could no longer hold or cancel the order.".

This was obviously a lie, considering I had requested the cancellation over 48 hours prior to the orders being shipped. I'm sure they didn't process and dispatch the order in the 7 minutes between me submitting and requesting cancellation of the order.

Further communication with the store proved futile as did communication with eBay (which was more disappointing).

I contemplated contacting PayPal however, give the value of the purchase (it's not trivial but certainly not something to lose sleep over), I don't think I want to waste more time on this.

Has anyone experienced this with sellers on eBay?
Whether it be eBay or some other online store, I've never previously had a cancellation request ignored.

When you click the Confirm button, you should have already checked that all your details are correct. You can't expect the seller to go out of their way to pull out your individual order because you couldn't be bothered finalising things to start with.

I'm sure they didn't process and dispatch the order in the 7 minutes between me submitting and requesting cancellation of the order.

Who knows? It could be that orders go to one place and enquiries go to another. Just because one seller is willing to deal with your laziness/carelessness, doesn't mean that every seller would.

I would suggest you check your details next time before confirming your orders.

The above is from your OP. Clearly, it's not the first time
you've got away with not double checking your details before you order so you just continue to do it. If that's not laziness or carelessness, then what is?

..with no understanding of the finer details…

Please feel free to enlighten us with these finer details you're referring to.

I have six different delivery addresses on my account and depending on where/what I order, I use different addresses. I make sure I double and triple check before I confirm each order so I've never had to request a cancellation.

If one day I did have to request to cancel, I would be very appreciative if the seller did, but I wouldn't blame them if they didn't.

Some people evidently have trouble understanding what the word "Confirm" means.

You enter into a legally binding contract to purchase an item when you commit to buy an item, your offer for an item is accepted, or if you have the winning bid (or your bid is otherwise accepted)

They are under no obligation to cancel your order. You can wait to receive it and return it if you wish at your own expense.

Also, the time it takes to ship is irrelevant. Many operate drop ship orders, some are automated processes that cannot be easily disrupted because you changed your mind.

So you placed an order late Friday night when they probably wouldn't be looking at their emails and expect them to cancel one and ship the other.

Why didn't you just accept the original address? What have you ordered that can't end up presumably at work??

Sorry OP but Ebay gives you multiple chances to confirm and check your details.

Whether it be eBay or some other online store, I've never previously had a cancellation request ignored.

Hang on here. Have you tried to cancel late at night before? How late are we talking? Had you done it during the day they might have noticed. Like many sellers, the item could have been shipped from China or HK as soon as you place the order it's packaged up. Probably didn't have ebay messages turned on, on their phone or they'd never catch a break.

Eh, just looked up a random item owned by them and it says:

    Return policy
Item must be returned within 30 days after the buyer receives it
The buyer is responsible for return postage costs.

You must return items in their original packaging and in the same condition as when you received them. If you don't follow our item condition policy for returns, you may not receive a full refund.

So I wonder if you can just use their return policy (assuming it says the same thing on the item you purchased), you could possibly refuse to sign (which means it gets returned to sender) or maybe you can use PayPal as I think they give free returns up to $40 in a year. Either way should get your money back?

Personally never had a problem with cancellation though, my guess is they didn't bother to check and just sent it, I probably would at least not bought the second time until the cancellation went through. But as others says its really up to them to accept a cancellation or not, so from that perspective theres not so much to do.

Also if you have the incorrect address see if it comes with tracking through your Aus Post account, this can sometimes allow you to change delivery addresses, you might be able to change it to pick up from a post box or parcel locker or something.

I instantly realised I had submitted the order with the wrong delivery address

I did that once. Now I'm more careful and check that everything is OK before confirming.

Solution - collected the item when it arrived from the delivery address. Simples.

  • What did you order

We have customers who do this and actually put in a process to ensure orders don’t get shipped out if there is an email identical to what the OP did. It is seriously super easy to cancel an order and remove it from the system. About two clicks of the mouse. Seems silly to ship anyways knowing you will just annoy the customer or have to deal with a return.

Really the only difference with many retailers is customer service and I’d rather look after people and treat them as best as possible. How stoked would the OP have been to get a simple reply and refund stating “all sorted mate…”

Sellers can't win. You have buyers complaining both about:

      1. They have it in stock, why hasn't it shipped immediately after I ordered?

      2. I cancelled within minutes, they couldn't have shipped it out that quickly!

      • +1

Very true. But those are the minority of buyers who are a pain. Every industry I have worked in has those type of people and you do the best you can but as a retailer I understand it is impossible to make everyone happy.

If I am at my PC then I will process eBay orders within minutes of the sale.
If an order entails printing an address on the AusPost MyPostBusiness system then once the transaction has been logged there is no ability to get a refund.

Looks like the seller is a drop-shipper. They would have automated their system that once an order goes through, it automatically orders the item from their supplier in HK, with the supplied delivery address.

So when they say it's already been shipped, it means that they have already passed on(automated) the order to their supplier and can't be reversed.

Live and learn, make sure everything is correct when you order stuff in the future.

  • Same thing happened to me with this seller. I don't mind if they come back and say "sorry, can't cancel deal with it" but saying that it's shipped 5 minutes after checkout is just dishonest. I guess the dropship theory rings true.

I've had to do this a few times before and it's never been an issue.

This is known as "being given an inch and taking a mile". Sellers agreeing to your requests to cancel are doing you a favour. They're not obliged to in any way, and you're not entitled to it.

  • Automated shipping does make some sense. I think cancelling, and reordering, is a pretty strange way of dealing with a wrong address; I would’ve sent an email asking if the address could be changed to avoid having two sent out. Sounds like both addresses are valid so you will get it even if you did get it sent to the wrong one.

  • I had a similar issue recently where I put in the wrong payment discount code.

I only realised once I received the confirmation email a few minutes later.

In my case I contacted Ebay who advised me to cancel the order with the seller and reorder using the correct code. They also said that if I disclosed my new order number on the cancellation details then this should be enough to deem this a genuine error.

Anyway, two weeks later and still no further forward. Two amounts have been taken from my account and both items delivered despite my efforts to cancel the initial delivery. Both remain unopened.

Ebay advised me to contact Paypal which I have done - but they have rejected the claim without any explanation. I appealed this but just say I don't meet the terms??

Went back to Ebay who were fully supportive and totally agreed with all that I had done and they said they would action the refund under the Ebay plus terms.
However they were also prevented from doing this because Paypal had blocked the return item process.

I've now been told by Ebay to go back to Paypal again and request a collection.

I feel like the ball in a tennis match…
