Which Monitor

Hi, i was wondering if anyone can give me their expert advice on which monitor to go for

1: Samsung UE590 27" 28" LED LCD 4K FreeSync Gaming Monitor UHD HDMI U28E590D TN $311
2: New ViewSonic 27" WQHD IPS LED Monitor VA2719-2K $273

I only play CS Go sometimes.. not a hardcore gamer.

My budget is around +- $300

Thanks

  • Which of the two has the better warranty? I'd go with that

    achew
    'scuse me

  • Can get the samsung for $250 (or less) if you wait for a sale. They are very out-of-date models by now.

Out of those 2 I'd go for the viewsonic. IPS vs TN isn't that much of a difference response time wise, but the colour difference definitely is big.

1440p vs 4k is somewhere between response time and colour. Only here there's a performance difference…mind that, they're both 60hz so pretty irrelevant.

So…yeah. TN vs IPS or 1440p vs 4k? Your choice, I reckon the IPS 1440p will be better.

    • Thanks for your reply.

    • Would you recommend AOC U2790VQ 27in 4K UHD IPS Frameless Business Monitor instead of the two ? Its about $319.

      • A nice mix of the 2. Probably a better opt then either of the first 2.

        How good's the stand though?

How good are you as CS:GO? I play CS:GO on my 34" 75 Hz Ultrawide, but that's because I'm trash. If you're any good, you're definitely better off with a 1080p 144 Hz panel. You only want to go for 4K display if you're playing more scenic/pretty games where you can appreciate the more detailed textures.

Between the two monitors you're tossing up, it's basically between a bad 4K panel and a good WQHD panel. Personally, I would go with the the ViewSonic because for me, colour accuracy, viewing angles and vibrance are much more important than resolution. More likely than not, you won't really realise the difference between 4K and WQHD, but you'll realise the TN vs. IPS difference straight away.

TN has a distinct look and viewing angles are very noticeable in a not so good way.

I would go IPS unless you know what TN personally looks like and don't mind it.

Unless you are a super hardcore fps gamer anything above 75hz doesn't really matter but you will know this if you have seen 120hz vs 60Hz.. The difference can be noticed if you are still a competitive or hardcore gamer.

    • Thanks Alienc for your reply. I'm not a hardcore gamer.. just netflix, youtube etc. My current monitor is is a Samsung S24B150 and i don't like it after i bought Surface laptop 2 which has 2k display. So i thought i'd upgrade my monitor as well.

      • I used to own a TN panel and now own a VA panel so the viewing angles are a little bit improved but I would imagine the IPS panel would have the best clarity and brightness (the TN panel had terrible luminosity and overall was dim compared to my current panel even if just a little bit).

I guess if you are in a bright room always then it won't matter but I am in low lighting most of the time so the brightness from the panel is most important.

Honestly just get the cheapest and if you watching 4k netflix then obviously get the 4k panel.

I game on a 4k monitor and honestly it is much better gaming on a large 4k monitor and taking a few fps hits (which normal people or old gamers don't notice) over having a smaller monitor with lower resolution just for those extra "super speedy" fps gains.

I am getting older now and honestly eye strain is a problem so higher fps is not always ideal honestly and I can live without the luxury as long as I maintain above 40 fps.

I would say get the 4k monitor for the 4k content which there are not plenty but definitely some on youtube/netflix/otherwise for example if you like looking at 4k images and renders/art you cannot do this on a lower than 4k resolution monitor without resizing/shrinking the image or only seeing part of it at a time.

Whatever you pick I hope you are happy with it because ultimately the choice is yours and you have to live with the decision or regret haha lol.

        Been there done that.

        All the best BlueDragon01.

        Happy gaming/netflix/browsing.

        • Would you recommend AOC U2790VQ 27in 4K UHD IPS Frameless Business Monitor (i have no idea what does business monitor mean? Maybe something to do with response time, though it says its 5ms which i think is not bad for an IPS monitor) . i tried to find online review for it but there aren't many. I have no idea how AOC brand is. Thanks for your detailed reply though.

          • @BlueDragon01: My answer to that is do you notice the difference of a few milliseconds at that microscopic level of screen response and lag.. If you do then get the lower response time but if you have to ask the question online you probably don't notice it and are like me would probably benefit from the larger screen and higher resolution over more frames.

Here is a really good simple recent business insider article that goes on about it very succinctly.

            https://www.businessinsider.com.au/4k-monitor-vs-gaming-moniā€¦

Basically get the 4k monitor with IPS as it is more brighter and things are more crisper and overall smooth compared to a lower resolution smaller screen TN gaming panel with yes higher refresh rate but overall the game looks more washed out and not as bright and not as smooth.

For me now it is a no brainer and 4k IPS anyday everyday over 240hz gaming monitors but when I was in your shoes trying to decide if those extra gaming frames would help me I did nearly go for a faster refresh rate with reduced resolution but I am glad I didn't because my 40 inch 4k 60hz VA monitor is bad ass.

If it was IPS oh man it would be insane but I can live with the compromise for the price I paid it was good.

The UE590 has pretty annoying whine too, very noticeable because it changes pitch depending on current brightness of the picture.
