Tax Return - Advice Needed

Hi,
I have some general questions regarding
1- when i claim overseas related expenses, do i exclude the tax in an invoice i paid as for the claiming amount? i think i should exclude that, right?

2- "Were you a temporary resident for Medicare purposes and have a Medicare entitlement statement from the Department of Human Services?"
should i say yes or no to this question? i am not eligible for medicare but i dont have the medicare entitlement statement either.

3- "Were you and all your dependants covered by an appropriate level of private patient hospital cover from 1 July 2018 to 30 June 2019?"
i have a private health insurance but not sure about its cover range. should i say yes or no?

thanks very much in advance.

You know you can ring the ato, or maybe pay an accountant, taking tax advice from ozbargain lol, that will work out well, see you in long bay :)

Because it's a serious matter that you should be asking an accountant about, rather than a bargains website …

    1. Not include
    2. Call Medicare - if you don’t have the letter then you have an obvious answer(?)
    3. You will have a letter form your health fund (but you click yes so you can update the details with appropriate codes that tie to your cover)… call your fund for details if you don’t have this letter.

    1. yes you can claim the tax on it to. It's the total cost of whatever you're claiming
    2. Are you eligible for the Medicare statement but just haven't applied for it ? If you're eligible for the statement, apply for it and either a) wait to lodge your return until you have it or b) lodge now anyway. if you're not eligible for Medicare, you don't pay for it

    3. well now you're just showing how lazy you are. call your health fund. your PHI details should prefil in your return. if you have basic hospital cover, you're fine. Extras cover doesn't count

    1. However much you are out of pocket is however much you can claim (assuming it's a valid claim in the first place)

    2. https://www.ato.gov.au/Individuals/Medicare-levy/Medicare-le… Maybe Category 2 or 3 might apply to you.

    1. You can include the overseas tax.
But make sure you can claim the expense as a deduction as not many can be claimed.

    2. As you're not eligible for Medicare, you need a Medicare Entitlement/levy exemption certificate from DHS to prevent ATO from charge you the levy by default. It takes a couple of weeks(up to 6 weeks from memory) to get this, so apply ASAP. You CANNOT finalise the tax return until you have the statement.

    3. If you're not eligible for Medicare, Q3 doesn't apply to you.
You would not get the private health insurance rebate, nor you would have to pay the Medicare Levy Surcharge.
Usually, for people on non-permanent visas, or do not provide a Medicare number to the PHI, they will not prefill insurance details as it doesn't apply.
