PSA: Mr Chen's Prawn Rolls - Prawn Size Reduced

I eat a lot of Mr Chen's prawn rolls. Now I finally finished my stash I bought for $3.75. I was annoyed and just bought them at $5 from my local Woolies (2072).

Anyhow, after I turned in my OzB membership for not waiting for the $3.75 sale, I noticed that the internal packaging of the prawn rolls had changed. The sauce packet was inside with the prawn rolls. The new rolls looked different, so I checked if the net weight had been reduced - no… very weird.

After I steamed the prawn rolls, I realised that the prawns have been reduced from a nice 10c coin size to a smaller than 5c coin size). The taste has certainly gone backwards. The prawns used to bulge out and change the shape of the roll, but now it fits neatly in the shape of the roll. The texture is more chewy with the smaller prawns in the roll now. I went back and bought another "new" pack of these prawn rolls to check that this wasn't a once off too.

Not sure if anyone else has noticed. Tastes ok, but certainly not as good as before. Just want to let everyone know before they buy 10 packs and regret it.

I don't know if you were expecting a cure to cancer in here or something. My title is clear as it can be.

The title was excellent, but the story left me begging for more.

          Was the story a bit…shrimp?

Was a bit shellfish of you to expect more

            @spackbace: I would've preferred something more crabtivating.

@spackbace: Take it on the Chen and move on

      • I, for one, appreciate the heads up.

Probably changed suppliers for the prawn or the entire product (third party manufacturer).

Not that I buy these things but always good to know people are observant enough. Here's hoping they're also smart enough to stop buying the products.

I noticed the change in prawn size since the product was made in Vietnam instead of Australia. I bought the made-in-Vietnam one to try. I didn't like it. The prawns were small as you said, and were bland, so I stopped buying Mr Chen's products ever since.

No you are not imagining it. Some their products have gone downhill since they changed their packaging. I think it happens a few months ago.

The spring roll also has one less roll than before.
The steamed prawn rolls are much thicker, sauce package is much smaller. I stopped buying them.

Thanks OP, your post has helped me. Not knowing much about these products, I bought a pack of Kailis Hargow Dumplings from Coles (not available from Woolworths) to try when they were 1/2 price. They are tasty and convenient to drop into instant soup noodles.

Since that item has not gone 1/2 price for a while now, I was considering this. Probably not suitable to drop straight into soup, but still similar once steamed(?). But after your description, I will probably pass.

I don't eat hargow often but Mr Chen's hargow was quite nice but since getting burned today I don't know if I risk buying them to try again.

Mr Chen's hargow is possibly the most popular frozen hargow which is why OzB goes a little mad when the Mr Chen's range is 50% off.
