New Electricity Connection

Hi,

I recently moved to Sydney from Melbourne via overseas & in the market for a new electricity connection. The best offer for a new connection in the market (researched through swithwise)is 'AGL Advantage 7' plan for my area. Origin Energy is offering me 5% discount as a new connection and 10% if it is switching before 30 June.

So Please suggest me of it is legally fine to I go with AGL with 7% discount and within cooling off period (10 days), I ask origin to switch me over & give 10% discount. So I will be switching to 10% discount without any contract breaking fee?

All comments welcome and appreciated.

But if you change your mind during the first 10 days, does Origin consider you a new customer or switching? Perhaps you are considered a new customer since you haven't really been with AGL yet.

  • I think It would be possible as my contract would have been started and on the System it would be AGL's name as my service provider. For Origin it would be getting a AGL account to their own.

On the other hand, they might regard you as not having really entered into a contract with AGL yet. Who knows?

Probably depends whether the 10 days cooling off is 10 days in contract or out..
In the case of most cooling off periods you're not in contract until the end of the cooling off.

  • yep thats true, appreciate if anyone can provide information.

I think it's not a matter of legal entitlement, it's simply what the electricity company is willing to offer. It's well known that established customers complain that churning customers get better offers. If you are within their definition of a churning customer and the sales rep is willing to give you a deal, you might win. On the other hand she might not. You could go with AGL, then ask Origin if they'll give you 10%. If not at least you have 7%.

  • Thats True Greenpossum, I can at-least try it out with Origin Energy. If I remember correctly the Origin people checked their system for the address and said it is with no-one at this time so it would be considered a new connection.

I will update the thread if Origin agrees for the 10% discount.

By the way AGL is offering 150 free credit + 7% if you switch from any other energy supplier.

Would be interesting to know if AGL —> Origin —> AGL possible :-)

  • AGL service is s.ck ! I am switching to another provider soon , any suggestions? Who I should put my money on ( Victoria )?

    • try switchwise.com.au or any other site to switch over. Origin energy is giving 10% discount on usage, which would be nice to get.

    • truenergy is giving 11% rebate on your annual usagein Victoria.

  • also have a look at redenergy - they do 7% discount if you go through switchwise, AND redenergy have no credit card fees (which is arguably another 1%-ish off)

re your 10 days proposal - you might find that the switch does not occur immediately, and by the time the switch occurs you are out of the 10 day cooling off period.

    • what a coincidence - I literally just got a call from AGL sales… I had swithced from AGL to Redenergy cos red offers 7% discount (plus 0% merchant fees) which AGL could not match.

… but lo and behold AGL call me 2 weeks later and tell me red haven't yet taken over the account and AGL can now offer 10% discount if I stay.

why couldn't they just offer that in the first place, ffs.

      • AGL discount only applies to usage cost where as RedEnergy discount applies to both usage and supply charges.

  • Plan features I can see from Redenergy is as follows (source : switchwise)as per this they have a contract for 2 years

    plan featuresDiscounts and Bonuses

    Billing Options

Standard Billing: Electricity bills issued every 3 months.
