      That's overstating it

    Overpriced

    • +3

Possibly. However, price increasing every year! Huge demand and limited supply.

  • +16

    Lowest price since 2019

    Is this guy for real?!?

    • +4

      He's from the future 😂

  • I managed to score a wee in store (firtst ever) taste of a Japanese whisky the other day. Can't remember the brand but it was very smooth and easier on my palate compared to regular shelf fillers - and cheaper.

  • not working for me

says 1 item unaviaible for pickup from castle hill
but when I click delivery it goes up to $300

    • Dan’s will usually set the delivery price to the same as the closest in-store price.

      • it might have sold out as well, It wont let me pick up from Castle hill at the moment

    • Try local vintage cellars. I manage to get two this morning.

      • yes I have the site open in front of me,

just trying to use wish cards as a preference, for obviois reasons:)

Great deal, just picked it up from Dan's!

$227 at vintage cellars with coles card.

    • Good!

      • +1

Thanks mate. Will see how this appreciates.

    • Can not checkout, as it is unavailable for delivery. Strange.

    • How did you pay at Vintage Cellars with Coles giftcard ? I only saw credit card or PayPal choices…. Online or physical store for you ?

  • +5

    can't buy, too poor

  • Would be cheaper to fly to Japan with a partner and buy a few /s

    • +1

I heard it’s hard to find any stock in Japan as well. And the price is around $250 plus tax.

    • I couldn't find any over there. They don't even sell the non aged Yamazaki at the distillery anymore!

      • +1

Agreed. It seems to be easier to purchase in Australia.

    • +1

      impossible to find in Japan..

      • 😱

    • nope, whisky drinker here and I been to japan 5x in last six years and I rarely see this, the few times I did, it was priced > A$200. But still, this is still too expensive

  • +3

I'm off to japan next week.-These are scarce and overpriced in Japan too, but there are lots of decent no age statement single malts at reasonable prices. Between my wife and I we will bring back 6 x 700ml bottles for about $250-$300 duty free and enjoy them slowly. Will get another Hakushu single malt, Ok for Nikka Coffey (still) Malt or Grain again, and keen to try some other recommendations from https://www.kotaku.com.au/2018/04/the-best-affordable-japane…
Probably will purchase at Bic Camera or similar rather than airport.

    • Good luck finding it in Japan.. LOLOL.. I went through over a dozen BIC Camera and local liquor stores all around Tokyo to Nagoya and can't find Yamazaki nor Hibiki.
They've already told tourists they are out of stock.. most likely reserved for premium local customers.

you cant bring back alcohol period from japan duty free unless you catch a direct flight. bchiiu you didnt try hard enough, i found a deli/liquor shop that had alot of bottles ranging from 12yrs to 25yr hibiki, yamazaki, hakushu and nikkas. well not alot maybe a handful if even of each, this was 3 years ago though. you MIGHT have a chance if you go to very hole in the wall deli the one i went to was very rundown by japanese standards but still clean. locals arent after the stuff and locals were the only ones that ever visited the place. it was in shinjuku of all places.

      • A LOT has changed in the last few years. I bought the non aged Yamazaki for about $60 duty free 4 years ago.

        • +1

And about 6 years ago I bought non aged Yamazaki not duty free for about $35. I lived there 2010-2015 and heaps of the all you can drink places also had non aged Yamazaki and 12 year Yamazaki as options. Kinda wished I bought more back then.

I was surprised to see local stores and bic camera cheaper than airport duty free. Something to keep in mind. Japanese whiskey is waaaay overpriced and rated in my opinion. At least my opinion saves me a lot of money :)

    • Hard to find in Japan now. I was there in January.

I got a few but paid a premium at 19800 yen tax free at around the 78 exchange rate and they limit purchases to 1 per day per passport

      I found a 25 Yamazaki and 25 Hakushu which I regretted not buying… 498000 Yen / 350000 Yen each per bottle respectively

Did come home with 6 bottles of Hibiki 21 @69800 Yen each, cleaned out the shelf 3 bottles a day (3 passports 2 days)

Best tip is to try the bigger dept stores as prices will more likely be "normal" accounting for minor supply/demand pressures. Touristy areas will have stores which sell the full range (including hibiki 17!)but at greatly inflated prices.

    • Try buying them from Don Quixote - you can get duty free from them very easily and I’ve noticed they’re usually better priced. Don Quixote also lets you buy other random stuff (lollies, kit kats, make up, etc) in the same transaction as duty free.

    It's $299 now?

    • Castle Hill shows 239.95. Not sure if it’s available for delivery or not.

  • coming up as unaviaaible for pick up from castle hill…
    maybe sold out?

  • +1

Just got a bottle from the Ascot Vale store for a price match with vintage sellers $239.
They have another 40 in stock

    • Thanks for the update!

  • Very overpriced and have been for several years now.

I used to buy these for around $100 each at Dan Murphy's :(

  • -1

Saw heaps of these and Hibiki 12’s at 7-11’s in Tokyo.

    • Don't think so mate. Maybe the NAS distillers but not the 12.

      • He probably means 3 to 5 years ago. People have no idea, they think times don't change

It was announced in the news May 2018 while I was in Japan that ingredients to make them had run out, any remaining stock literally disappeared the next day.

  • thoughts on keeping one of these stashed away in the dark for 5-10 years? Price has been going up but probably plateaued now.

Also unavailable for delivery at this price, price changes to $299 if your delivery postcode is anywhere other than castle hill.

    • Try local dan murphys stores to see if they can price match with vintage sellers.

Overpriced…If you drinking $2000 a bottle of whiskey, it is your logical brain tell you that its a good one, not your tongue…Your brain tries hard to find the positives of the product to justify the cost. How can a 12 year old whiskey be rare?

    • if its not avaiailbe anywhere, its rare, it doesnt have to be quality

I have a few expensive bottles, and for the price they are , they are not worth it in terms of drinking

if I was going to buy a bottle to drink and to enjoy the flavour (and not show off to whoever) I wouldnt be touching any japanese ones, the cheaper ones are much better value for money

  • Ordered with Vintage Cellars free delivery. Thank you OP!

    • 👍👍

    • Have you received a shipment notification?

  • What's the hype with Japan's whiskey? Does it cure cancer? Or is it actually the elusive elixir of life?

    • Many like the smoothness, and were drinking it when it was only $119 in 2014, most of my friends stopped buying when price went up

  • +1

    Any radiation?

    • Just drink it neat, I'm sure you'll feel the effects

  • I can understand buying this for the rarity but not for taste. When I was in Japan in late 2017, I saw these and Hibiki (I think around the $100 mark but not sure) at a BIC in Tokyo - thought it was common so figured I'd pick one up later in the trip and couldn't find them again.

For taste, I only really enjoyed the 12 year and older Hibikis - the unlabelled aged ones pretty much tasted like mixing whiskey to me.

  • Had no issues getting this at Mega Donki @ Shibuya (April this year). Still have a bottle in front of me.

    • How much?

      • I'd like to think it was sub $150 but I can't remember as I bought quite a few different bottles this time round. Definitely below $200 as I was given a 'limit' per bottle purchase by SWMBO. Somewhere between $150-180 I'd believe

        • Good to know! Thanks for the info.

  • update:
for some reason delivery is now avaiaible for free anywhere, and doesnt need to be picked up from castle hill,
Just ordered a few for delivery to VIC,

this option didnt work a few days ago
