  • were people having trouble with the cashback with the previous ones? I seem to remember people were

    • +2

My just took a long time to arrive but it did at the end.

Other than that never buying foam again. It's a mess compared to the solution, lot more wastage and much harder to actually get it in the area you want.

      • I melt it down, makes it much earlier to apply the foam.

    • +1

I have got it every time, may take a little while.

  • to those that use this are you familiar with propecia? or for the true ozbargainers proscar? a generic vesion of 5mg proscar tabs will set you back $25 for 30, which is 120 - 240 days treatment, 80% success rate afaik… cheaper, more effective and far easier than washing your hair twice? a day

    • +2

Washing hair twice a day? You just put this in twice a day….

Agreed a tablet would be FAR easier though. This worked for me, I have now decided to embrace the hair loss though.

      • -1

ahh.. i thought it was like a rinse.. but yes that makes sense… i imagine it would also make your hair look like shit and limit what hair products you could use… another negative

yeah tablets are better in every way.. i assume the only reason people use this stuff is because that are ignorant of the medication or it has been proven ineffective for them

        • +1

It was my hair product haha, it holds pretty decently. I had a fair bit of side affects with Finasteride, it's much more powerful and it's side affects are much more serious and common. So perhaps ignorance drives people to take more powerful drugs just because they are cheaper?

          • @onlinepred: i really haven't had any negative effects, i was under the impression they were rare… actually morning wood is rare but that comes back when i take a break… can't think of anything else tbh… well into the 2nd decade for me and still firing at will
what type of side effects did you have? did you adjust dose?

            • @desync: Within 5 months I became depressed. I lost libido during this period. I stooped taking Finasteride and my libido did not return. After talking with 2 doctors, they believe the rate is more like 25-30% of all patients that have been referred have been affected. Luckily I have regained some of my libido, but have been told it will never be the same. I took Regaine for 5 years prior to Finasteride with no side affects.

It's why I warn people, if it's really worth it. For me I wish I never took it. The friend who recommended it to me got enlarged breasts - which is no joking matter. Legit this stuff is crazy.

              • @onlinepred: thats sux man, unfortunately you are one of those rare people that have been negatively effected, this snippet of an article might be of interest to you

                snip…

"There’s a common misconception that using finasteride will result in having sexual side effects, and that’s not inevitably true. Despite the fact that some people experienced side effects in the form of impotence, decreased libido, and ejaculatory dysfunction, yet that was only encountered with 2.1% to 3.8 % of the cases. The last statement was an outcome of an analysis made in a comprehensive review of a total of 73 articles focusing on the effects of medicinal agents on the sexual function.
The authors of other different numerous studies concluded that the effect of finasteride on sexual functioning is negligible for most men and should not affect the decision to prescribe or take finasteride. The same was published by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) that stressed on the point ‘’ Millions of patients have benefited and still benefit from the use of finasteride, with no side effects or minimal and reversible side effects.’’

                • @desync: If you actual read where the sample of that article is from, it's from a sample of men affected by prostate cancer aged 55 and older.

The actual figures are much higher in general population.

                  https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5023004/
"Sexual dysfunction, including erectile dysfunction, loss of libido, and reduced ejaculate, may occur in 3.4 to 15.8% of men treated with finasteride or dutasteride." - 2016 study. There was also an article my doctor sent me to show that since 2012, the occurrences has increased - he hypothesised this due to environment changes.

                  • @onlinepred: Important to note that in these studies we are looking at 5 times the dose at 5mg, not the 1mg as perscribed for hairloss

                    from your link:
"A comprehensive review of a total of 73 papers on medical therapies for BPH was conducted, with a focus on the effects of different pharmacological agents on sexual function.[6] The review revealed that finasteride is infrequently associated with

                    • problems of ejaculation (2.1-7.7%)
                    • erection (4.9-15.8%)
                    • libido (3.1-5.4%)."

                    also this

"Several studies have evaluated these parameters and found erectile dysfunction reported in 3.4 to 15.8 percent of patients treated with finasteride 5mg daily versus 1.7 to 6.3 percent treated with placebo"

so at 5 times the dosage it's still considerably lower than first suggested, at 1mg it's actually quite rare that you'll be affected

                    • @desync: When it comes to irreversible medical side affects, I consider 6/100 a huge risk, I really wouldn't go saying that that is rare at all. It's higher than general population risk of many things like certain cancers. It's interesting as we see so many people who consider 10/100 not a big risk, and yet the majority see it as a huge risk.

Anyway happy to discuss further, but I think this has run it's course. I wouldn't recommend drugs that greatly increase risk over the general population risk, especially when it's something like 150% greater chance than the general population, that's crazy. It also increases your risk of prostate cancer.

                      • @onlinepred: again.. you are confusing the risks based on 5 times the dosage, the ratess based on 1mg which is what we are talking about here are

                        2.0% with decreased libido
                        1.4% with “ejaculatory disorder”
                        1.7% with impotence

                        https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4285451/

very rare the entire population is going to respond the same way, theres always going to be some people that are ultra sensitive.. but these rates are considered very low risk and very well tolerated

at 5 times the dose (5mg) we see elevated risk but these people have bigger problems to deal with, it's a different ball game

                        • @desync: Literally another OZB described havingt side affects also.

                          • @onlinepred: a 3rd of those who cited side effects were on a placebo

                            • +1

@desync: And how many of the articles and figures posted are by entirely self funded independent reviewers? You know most articles about Regaine are funded, sponsored or related to Regaine parent company right? It's true for most drugs.

Anyway, peace out, glad you don't have side affects!

                              https://www.drugs.com/comments/finasteride/

              • @onlinepred: Appreciate the honest feedback.

Love it when the OzB community can honestly discuss things like this.

Agreed that medication is so much simpler but there's the level of effectiveness as well as the need to get a prescription for Proscar/Propecia.

Don't forget as well that there's also potential side effects with taking medication for some people and for this medicine, common side effects are rashes and impotence.

    • I need to get a prescription though… Or use a shifty site.

    • +1

Mate, I've been on it 11 months and have seen no benefits. Only negative effects, unfortunately I'm 37 and I'm just naturally receading a little.
I'm against Minoxidil too, CBF using it for the rest of my life.

Finasteride, I was dosing .5 EOD and I was a mess! Libido was all over, my loads were tiny and my skin was drying out. After 6 months I went to .5 everyday and everything normalised. Hardness, libido back up, loads still small.
By the way within the first 3 weeks I gained 6kgs!!!!!!! I ain't even joking, probably all water! Last 2-3 months I've been taking 1mg and it's the same.
I've seen no difference, as in when I shower basically the same amount of hairs in my hands vs 11 months ago. I had bloods done before and during, my DHT wasn't that high anyways and Finasteride dropped it even further.
Thyroid function was down 20%, cholesterol was up etc

1 more month and I'll be stopping, honest I'd rather save 5k for. FUE transplant to fix hairline if it gets worse.

I'd recommend seeing a dermatologist or hair specialist to just get a scalp assessment because hair loss can be caused by diet, skin conditions, DHT etc

Probably going to use a Derma Pen, results have been good at 1-2 a week. If using Minoxidil foam, definitely buy a derma roller or a derma pen as results are much better.

0.5 EOD is quite a low dose, i doubt that would of done anything for me, ive stuck with 1mg a day, after around 6 months the difference is ridiculous

it'll take 3-6 months for you to see the effects, also you will still shed hair, part of the hairs normal growth/shedding cycle, the difference is you'll be shedding less and when your hair grows back it does so the same as before rather than small/thinner… but thats the thing, you actually have to wait for that shedded hair to actually grow back, thats what makes the difference

so if you are shedding now.. you need to take into account how much time those hairs will take to grow back, if you take the rate of 1cm/month then you'll need another good 3 months to see the effect

        • I've been shedding for 4-5 years mate, and let me tell you the first freakin dose I took - the following day I could barely get an erection and when I blew literally nothing came out.

I'm not some 22 year old, I'm 37 soon and know my body! I don't take any drugs or medications.

I gained alot of weight, I'm very muscular and lean generally. My skin dried out, im European and have oily skin and I developed rashes all over my body. All it took was 0.5mg every other day to cause that.

I had bloods done after 3 months and my DHT has decreased close to 30% and that's on 1/4 of the dose so I believe by now at 11 months including a few months at full dose I'd notice some effects.

Plenty of recent posts on hairloss forums where people aren't seeing any results.

Studies are great, generally based on a few hundred people. I feel like if your hair loss is DHT related you probably wouldn't have sides as you had high DHT but I actually had very AVG levels of DHT so in reality it's dropped my DHT to extremely low.

I'm doing another month, will run bloods and quit.

That's 12 months, absolutely nothing has happened and to be honest I'd rather my rock hard C&&K back and my pornstar loads. Oh I'd also like to drop back to 96kgs, where as ATM I'm 105kgs on the exact same diet.

Other concerns I have is, the rat studies showing issues with birth defects? I haven't had children yet.

I generally have alot of hair, it's just thinned a bit at the front but I've come to terms with using a derma pen, and saving $5,000 for few thousand grafts of a FUE.

Taking a prescription drug, and applying serum to my head twice a day for the next 20-30 years isn't that appealing to me.

It definitely works for some, my mate does both and works a treat but he was next level doing bald from steroid abuse. Mine is more a naturally receading hairline.

I'm not anti Finasteride, but it doesn't hasn't worked for me. The sides definitely calmed down after I went to 0.5 everyday and nothing changed when I went to 1mg.

The worse case is, I can always go back on it later on if required. I've given it a full year, and what in another 6 months someone else will write oh it takes years blah blah blah.

Literally all forums say it takes 6-8 months to work, I've been on it 11 months.

Anyways that my view, review on it. I hope it works for others, I mean I was hoping I'd take it and want bam after 6-8 months I'd shower and have absolutely nothing in my hands but that just isn't the case.

          :)

          • @[Deactivated]: wow, thats pretty crazy, never had anything like that, did you read up a lot about the side effects before you started? were you concerned about it?

yes it definitely appears for me that high DHT was the main driver for my hairloss, it really stopped it in its tracks, actually ended up with more hair than i had when i started, not that it grew more but simply because it normalised the shedding and prevented thinner regrowth

also i started this when i was just a young adult which seems to make sense/fit with high DHT being the main cause

i completely agree with you, could be something else entirely, diet, vitamin d, dna damage decreasing mineral/vitamin absorption efficiency, some other hereditary cause. I was just suggesting that i don't think 0.5 EOD wouldn't of done anything for me, i remember dropping to 0.5 dose for a while and felt that the effectiveness dropped off quite a bit.

how long have you been on it at 1mg / day?

            • @desync: Yeah, the water gain and dry skin/rashes basically happened instantly. It's not something you can create with your mind!

I did that dose for 6 months? When I went to .5 everyday my erections got better actually.
I've been at full dose for 2 months, but in total 11 months. I think I would of seen some benefits by now even with the 25-30% drop in DHT in the first 3 months is actually half what full dosage does. I have very thick hair, minor thinning at front hairline. You'd probably laugh if you saw my hair, but I got paranoid and just wanted to keep it at bay.

My diet is very poor, has been my whole life. Everyone has thin hair in my family but me! I assume it's just my age, around 33-34 it started happening. I just noticed hairs when I shampoo which I never use too , just like 15-35 hairs.

Like I mentioned from the first dose, I noticed something in my balls! I'm use to blowing big loads and basically nothing came out! You cant imagine that shit in your mind lol

I never thought I had high DHT, I'm not really aggressive and I've always had bloods and had really good hormones, so if it was hormonal I would of experienced hair loss earlier.

It's probably genetics, I've been using shampoos, serums and vitamins for years with no changes.

I also don't have any balding in crown area, which basically says I'm not experiencing hair loss. Frontal hairline is considered a naturally occuring hairline with age apparently.

              :/

      • You are still taking it after getting all those side effects? I thought you were supposed to stop taking it immediately if you get any side effects?

        • Because every 2nd person says/said just give it sometime!

  • If you do not mind liquid and a generic, from an Australian chemist. https://www.chemistdiscountcentre.com.au/#!/brand/724/minoxi….

    • +1

For the liquid, ebay works out at $10.24 per bottle/month delivered with current PANTSUIT discount:

      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/192789180835

      (I've converted from USD)

      • How do you find the liquid compared to the foam?

        • I've never used either but this thread has got me interested. I've ordered from the ebay link above. Will see how it goes.

    • This stuff says 'For men and women' on the box, from what I know, Minoxidil is really bad for woman and should be avoided.

Just makes it come across as super dodgy.

  • -1

Chemist Warehouse often has them at 1/2 price sale a few times in a year. It is much cheaper than a $50 cashback.

    • Hmm full price is actually $138, so you end up paying $84.55 instead of $80. You can wait to save $5 but it's not that cheaper!

      • -1

        How'd you do that calculation? 50% of $138 = $69.

        • -1

$138 is not the full price but already discounted.
          so when it's 50% off, it's not $69 ($138/2) unfortunately :(

You can check the 50% deal that was posted on ozbargain to see it's not $69.

          • @ValouSydney: I am sure $69 for the solution, and approximately $75 for the foam when they are on 1/2 price sale at Chemist Warehousẹ

          • @ValouSydney: You literally said full price is $138 In the post above.

            • @gadgetguy: Sorry my bad, that's because the regaine offer says you have to pay the product full price to get the cash back.
Anyway as said, $138 is the price already discounted compare to RRP and when chemist warehouse offers 50% discount they do it on RRP and not on the $138.

              Sorry for all the confusion.
