Have You Had Someone Ask You to Post a Deal?

I just had someone message me (and try to add me; male name but photo of a woman) on my Facebook, asking if I could post a deal about earphones on OzBargain.

Yeah, nah. I'm very devoted to my Sony wireless noise-cancelling headphones and earbuds.

Not sure how they found my facebook and knows I go on OzBargain. Anyone else had this happen to them on their social media/elsewhere?

Yup, but not on social media, was on here

To date I think it's been about 4 times or so

Ndot sure how she found my facebook and knows I go on OzBargain.

    That's hella creepy. Wth?

    • Right? Could have been a lucky guess but I still have no idea why they singled me out …

Any of their FB account info that you could pass onto the mods? I'd personally prefer that any kind of OzB<—>FB doxxing to be shut down and discouraged…. very strongly.

        • Yeah; happy to send the link of the Facebook profile that asked me to the mods if they need it

Have you liked/commented on any of the Ozbargain FB posts?

        • +1

Good point. I have in the past; last one I liked was the old Dick Smith ad for cordless phones from the 16th

@kerfuffle: I think now would be a good time to stop giving any more details. For example, in case you want to become a politician in the future and dedicate your OzBargain alter-ego to vent racist and sexist momentary thoughts.

            • +2

@peterpeterpumpkin: I have no desire to either become a politician or spout racist and sexist thoughts on OzBargain :)

@kerfuffle: Plus, if you were a politician, why would you waste those rants on OzBargain?

  • +2

Yeah I had a new user ask me if I wanted to post deals for them.

Edit. I just checked my inbox. The user is in the penalty box now.

I wish I was popular enough to be asked to do that sigh

      I think you're neat :-)

I had someone impersonate me and tried to get Chinese stores to pay him to post. Fortunately those stores tipped me off ;)

That reminds me of the guy going around using other people's avatars like those of scotty and jv. But I suppose you wouldn't know anything about that, would you?

      • +5

I don't know anything about that.

      • +3

I hate those guys - always have to do a double-take which hurts my brain.

        • +1

I know right! All those orange and white avatars really make it hard.

  • My wife sometimes asks me to post deals.

    • What's the deal with that?

    • You have a wife? Who knew…

        Yes, miracles can happen..

I had someone contact me via PM once with a deal for a stripper party. Can't remember if the deal was just for me or I was allowed to post it on ozb. I was terribly flattered for some reason, and slightly weirded out, and politely declined the offer. I'm just not a stripper-party-kinda person.

    Edit: Just found the PM

    • I was politely asked to take down the link , so I did :(

      • How do you manage to be so polite?

I've never been able to pull it off - well not consistently…

        • … and yet, someone still accused me of bullying them and had a full-blown tanty about itπŸ™„

Yea someone on OzBargain PM'd me to post an Amazon deal. I reported them and their account got disabled.

  • Oh! … and someone tried to blackmail me once, by threatening to "reveal my real identity" and post photos of my family that he got off my wife's insta account, if I didn't lend him my car for the weekend. It was seriously weird.

    • Sadly can't find that pm. They must have contacted us via my wife's insta account which she has since deleted.

Don't forget to show them some teeth.
      And maybe some cat sounds.

So much for no one talks to youπŸ™„

  • An employee/associate from UMIDIGI emailed me to post a deal ~2 months ago (no idea how they've gotten my email address)

  • I think it's fine to suggest other members post deals, especially when that member appears to specialise in certain areas.

I sometimes think of doing it when i'm unable or don't wish to maintain a post - and some need maintenance….

I think it's fine to suggest other members post deals, especially when that member appears to specialise in certain areas.

The main reason why people suggest that others post deals is basically to circumvent the rep posting rule. i.e. sockpuppeting. I told this person that I wasn't going to promote their "shit earphones"; so far no response 😏

  • No but I am cheap if anyone wants to offer me some cash to post a deal!

    • Make sure you mark yourself associated if you do.

      • Hold on, my post was only a joke but are you saying that we can post a deal on behalf of someone else and accept payment to do so as long as we mark ourselves associated with them?

If you are then my original comment is definitely not a joke!

  • I got a message on Facebook a few months ago from the marketing manager from a Chinese company, who wanted me post their deals on here. This is what they messaged me.

Hello, I am Genesis, marketing manager of Aicok. Our company is a participant in Amazon with a good reputation focusing on manufacturing high-quality kitchen and home appliances. At present, we are entering the Australian market, and sometimes we will release some discount coupon information. We learned that OzBargain is Australia's largest deal website, but one of the most important conditions for posting a post on its page is that the publisher must be Australian, so we found you and hope that you can help us. Of course, you will get some compensation. Please feel free to let me know if there is any possibility for you to accept it. Your favorable reply would be highly appreciated. Thank you.
