Blue Snowball Ice Microphone $59 (Was $99) @ Big W

280

Saw this at my local Big W this morning. Can't seem to find it on their website so might be instore only. Seems like a decent price. My young fella has one and loves it.

hey fellas, running the Yeti atm on a stand, but it leaks alot of keyboard sounds. Probs sitting about 20cm away from keyboard running green switch (razer) wwondering what options are. and have changed the recording pattern to record from one side only (cardiod)
anyway to stop sound leak from keyboard?

      Quieter keyboard?

      • Solid Ideas all. Thank you!

look into your settings to see if you can audio gate.. basically fiddle around with the levels, until your keyboard sound is reduced/gone, and your voice remains.

Download the ReaPlugs from REAPER and fiddle with the noise suppressor and gate VST plugins. I'm assuming you use a DAW or OBS or something that can support this. Use a mic windsock. Turn the gain to basically 0 on the microphone and speak one hand-span away from it. Other than that (depending what you're doing with the mic) some keyboard sounds can't be avoided. These type of mics are very, very sensitive.

      • Good info, will try!
Yeh OBS is the go to.

Get it on a boom/adjustable arm.

Otherwise, try software like this awesome deal on AppSumo, https://appsumo.com/krisp/

      • Thanks for the link!
Will have a look into this as well :D

Generally desktop mics are condenser types, good quality, but have large pick up distances, or will pick up even a pin drop at short distances.

Headset or similar mics are dynamic, with much shorter pickups.

I use a desktop condenser as I love the quality and occasionally use it for video work, however when I have houssemates, it really doesn't work! I've only tried some very low pass filters to screen out background car noise (yes people hear it!). Not sure how well it'll do for keyboard or houssemates.

      • so for future reference i should purchase a mic thats dynamic for streaming?

        • Generally the big streamers will go for condensers, as they want quality. They will however have a very quiet environment, be running it on a boom and decoupled, with pop filter, and have some good filters to really trim down any noise /keyboard etc. Better result for more effort.

If you have a noisy environment, or have housemates, I'd say you're likely limited to a dynamic mic.
