Has anyone tried the jasmine rice when it was originally a product of Australia, and the Cambodian product? Any visible differences?

      Cambodian better imo

Originally Australian produce seems cooked better with my Tiger ricecooker as it tastes sweeter and softer, where Cambodian produce is more chewy and a bit dry for the same amount of water used.

Add more water then? Amount of water required depends on factors such as the variety of rice, the growing conditions and the age.

Myself I have found the Cambodian jasmine rice to be fine. Last batch I bought needed the water level to be just over twice the height of the rice and it was nice and fluffy. Every new batch I get it usually takes 2 to 3 cooks to adjust correctly. I am using a simple rice cooker.

Yes I found out the perfect water ratio eventually however I still prefer Australia grown. So now I buy Australian Koshihikari rice instead and it is actually taste better than Australian jasmine rice too.

@monkp: I agree aussie rice is better. I didn't know they changed until I saw this post. I thought they tasted different and I liked the old one. Now I know why. I find if I soak the rise for at least an hour before turning on the rice cooker it taste softer and sweeter.

@limey: Two people that don't know anything about cooking rice prefer rice grown in an arid continent

              • @BumbaT: You have a valid point there. However I rate Japanese grown is the best, follow by Taiwanese and then Thai/Cambodian. Give a try on Australian Koshihikari and I'm sure you'll be surprised.

    • We used to ignore the aussie sunrice and just buy the 22kg jasmine rice from costco. But since sunrice switched to cambodian jasmine, not anymore.

I find the rice to water ratio for the cambodian jasmine better at just under 1:1.5. If I cook 4 cups of rice, water would be about 5.5 cups. YMMV.

  • its been awhile 1/2 price for brown rice.
