Love their Gen 1 robot vacuum. Paid about ~$40 more over a year ago and it hasn't missed a beat. Would buy again and do recommend it to others.
Yes I second this, does the job and I don’t see the upgraded version any better than the first generation especially the heavy price tag.
2nd gen was $399 a few months ago. Higher climbing ability, stronger suction and a mop function. But gen 1 is still good.
I got mine replaced under warranty after the side brush stopped spinning. Has been ok since.
does the gen 1 robot vacuum still have problems with dark carpets?
Yes. Mine has issues on the black parts of my rug. But it just goes around that part.
Xiaomi Mi Robot or Aldi robot mmmm

Why?
I have a circa-2014 Aldi robot vacuum and a Xiaomi Gen 1.
The Aldi one is a lot "dumber" than the Xiaomi. It only has a bumper sensor at the front so just meanders around the room in a pre defined pattern until it hits something, then backs up a bit and keeps going in a different direction.
The Xiaomi has additional sensors and will map out the room, then generate a pattern to ensure complete coverage. It also has an app that allows you to control and schedule the cleaning, rather than a basic IR remote.
The Xiaomi build quality seems better at a glance. Both still run fine.
Cleaning performance between the two seems comparable, but we don't have thick carpet, kids, or pets.
Edit: Had a look at the Aldi one coming out this weekend. It's a completely different model with different features to mine.

Does this do well with mapping and returning home?
My current Roomba 670 is bloody shocking and keeps getting stuck and lost.
Doesn't need to be insane suction or anything as we also have a V6 and a Miele C3 we use for bigger cleans.
Only time mine gets lost is if the dog lies in front of the station…
I also like tempting into my wifi and sending it around the house, seeing the (simple) lidar it does is cool too.
In the same boat here. The amount of times I came home and then spent 10 mins trying to find the damn thing drove me insane.
Jump on the app and it showed you where the robot stopped! Easy haha.

I might return mine under the ACL as it very very rarely actually ever makes it back to the base.
Yep. Mine is a super old model though, but it was a 50/50 chance that it made it back to it's base.
Mostly good but not faultless. Some occasional occurrences include flipping the map of my house around so left is right and then it goes the completely wrong direction for zoned cleanups and it occasionally if I stop it on the way to a zoned cleanup and draw a new zoned clean up it won’t be able to find the base when it finishes.
Still nowhere near as annoying as having to vacuum manually.
